Anyone know what the advantages and disadvantages of using this on MacBook with smaller storage vs bigger storage MacBook?

    • +6

      What?

    • +2

External storage is temporal, it's not always there with the macbook.

Have you given your own question even a little bit of thought?

    • +1

      Pros:

      • Cheaper.
      • Could be use on multiple Mac devices. It's removable / portable.
      • (For non-M1) The ability to boot Windows from this.

      Cons:

      • Slower than internal SSD.
      • To get the full speed out of this, you need to use 1 Thunderbolt port.
      • Compared to Thunderbolt SSD enclosure, USB 3.2 gen 2 isn't fast enough (though TB3 based setup costs a lot more). The chipset is technically limited to PCIe gen 3 x2 (not x4).
      • Sustained write after SLC cache runs out on this device isn't great.
      • I was benchmarking this drive with BlackMagic to test out the various USB/TB3 ports on my dock and discovered its read/write rates would drop to atrocious levels, eg 80MB/s instead of 800MB/s. Tom’s Hardware only shows the performance halving once the cache is full, so I am guessing the thermal throttling accounts for the rest of the reduction.

FWIW running a macOS Monterey VM off this drive seems to be fine.

        • M1? T1's true sustained write (NAND instead of SLC cache) is around 120MB/s. Given M1's USB issue, I guess 80MB/s could be the case. I don't think USB 3.1 gen 2 is a great idea for M1, but it is cost effective.

          • @netsurfer: I didn’t know about M1’s issue but I have an i7. Is T1 referring to the Samsung drive?

Reading my notes at the time, the slowest I got was actually 16MB/s (copying a 100GB VM took over 10mins over TB3!! Though it would have topped out on a USB 10Gbps port anyway)

Maybe I’ll script up some test to measure its decline over time, perhaps with temp data

The 1TB for $149 is a better deal. 100% more capacity for 50% more money.

Edit: Looks like it's temporarily out of stock, but you can still backorder it.

    • Literally got 2 of these last week for around $135 from BingLee Ebay with a boxing day discount code, works a treat.

  • I was just researching this! I read many reviews that apparently the T7 model seems to overheat more often than the T5 model. Anyone has experience with this? Thanks!

    • +1

Not really, they produce similar amount of heat under constant write / read. I've never felt it uncomfortably hot as it appears to be according to those articles. Warm, but not hot at all for both models.

T7 does require higher power than T5 (1.5A vs 0.8A) however.

  • This or nvme Crucial with enclosure?

  • guys I've got a brand new unopened under warranty 2TB red version that I probably shouldn't have bought on black friday, msg me I'll let it go for cheap

  • +1

Should be USB 3.2 Gen.2 (10Gbps) under the new USB naming system, which is mid-tier (5Gbps Worst, 20Gbps Best) for Gen 2. Therefore it would have been USB-C 3.1 under old system if anyone is still confused.

  • Don't know why, but can't find the current (ends today I think), Coles giftcards with flybuys points, effectively 10% off for eBay and Amazon with 5 card limit; this will improve both eBay plus and Amazon value.

  • Improved with new eBay plus code now.
