Am I the only one that thinks 8gb of non-upgradable RAM on a laptop is unacceptable in 2023? At this price at least

I have an 8gb MacBook Pro (pre-M1).
I honestly don't think it's fine, it's almost always maxed.
And if I'm spending close to 2k, I don't want fine, I want excellent
I have an M1 Air with 8GB and have never had an issue with it not being enough, I really think it depends on what you’re using it for
Why not upgrade the ram when you buy a new mac then?
I have a 2014 MacBook Pro with 8gb and while I'd prefer the newer ones had more ram, I picked up a MacBook Air M1 in Dec for approx $1,150 (discounts + discounted gift cars). The new MacBook Air does everything that I need it to do with 8bg, no fan and long battery life.
Of course apple are happy to sell you one, but I don't know that you need to go up to $2k for a MacBook if you don't do intensive tasks on the go.
Having said that, the 2014 Macbook did almost everything I needed to do as well. For internet browsing, watching movies and admin I still can't really fault it. It just had no battery left and was starting to show it's age with the occasional more intensive tasks.
My M2 16gb mbp is always complaining that there's no ram left…

I use xcode with no problem on a mac mini m1 8gb/256gb. (in fact even my mac mini 2014 in which I replaced the HDD with an SDD was reasonable for my needs).
But, I do all graphical/video work on a PC with 32GB of ram.
@immrnonamehello: Use a external SSD for swap disk space for photoshop, that’s a waste for your ram.

I bought into the performance hype around the M1 and got the base 8gb ram model near 2 years ago… In hindsight, I would choose the 16gb ram every singe time time (or more).
The M1 8gb can do some amazing things, especially if you're the one-app-open at a time kind of person. Its when the multitasking starts that the 8gb model can rapidly slow to speeds that remind me of the Pentium 4 era - when it slows.. it slows! Even with the M1 hype - If you're used to higher performance computers (like me) you might notice the 8gb can't handle the multi tasking you're used to.
My Mac is my travel companion and casual couch-warrior computer and I love it for that, the fact they don't get hot or make noise is where the magic happens and a Mac at this price point is so much more care-free compared to a $3-5k Macbook when you're using it away from your desk.

@coast666: Salary sacrifice is the real winner - use all your fancy discounts, then get GST back and whatever your marginal tax rate. There is a cost to a third party provider for the salary sacrifice.

I bought the weekend before Christmas Woolworth gift cards (accepted in JB, Good Guys, Harvey Norman) at 10% off and then purchased a MBP 14 inch at 15% discount with those gift cards. Very good deal!

Better learn to solder if you're thinking of replacing the SSD.
Stop lying
With 8GBs of RAM the system will constantly be writing to swap, wearing out the SSD prematurely (especially if you're running memory intensive programs). As it's not user replaceable it will likely end up in landfill.
Your comment comes across as a generality and not first hand experience.
Or, be re-sold at a good price to someone who doesn’t use many ‘memory intensive programs’.
@Eeples: It's a well documented phenomenon. You can find news articles, apple support forum posts and reddit threads on the issue so I'm not sure how that's a generality.
Excessive swap writes = Reduced SSD lifespan
Non-replaceable SSD = $2500 paper weight.

Moreover, it is way better to hear of real-world experiences of people in such a forum such as this, rather than some half-assed google search.
Certainly though, even moderate video or graphical work, seems to be a struggle for 8gb/256gb m1 machines as evidenced by two real persons on these forums.

Well that sucks, just bought another $5K device 2 weeks ago at full price was told the Macbook Pros "will never sell at a discount" when I asked for the best deal.
In my experience, I never buy any iMac/Apple product without a 10% discount. Even when there is no sale I've had success just asking for 10% off.
I got 10% off last time just by walking in to the Apple Store and telling them I'd buy it on the spot if they knocked 10% off.
You should never take the word of a sales man as gospel.
There is always a way to grab a discount.
The normal retail devices always go on sale 10%.

I think I technically could return it, Apple have a 28 day (iirc) no questions asked return policy.
But I've spent days setting it up with software, data and adjusting things just way I like.

Haha no wonder you get easily punked if you listen to salesmen. A quick Ozbargain search would have easily revealed Macs go one sale quite frequently. I’d be bitter too if I found out I could have saved $500 with almost no effort

What are JB Hi-Fi refurbished items like?
At the bottom of the list are some quite good discounts like $3059 for a base 16 inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro. Full price for a new one is $3749 so its around 18% reduction.
If JB Hi-Fi refurbished are similar to Apple refurbished then it may be worthwhile but if they are lower quality (more wear and tear) or its more difficult to get any problems repaired then may be better to avoid.
