Just pop over to WA and have a whinge here where we can hear you

  • whats the latest on wether these work for shopback/cashrewards etc

    • It's in-store purchase, so no

      • He means if they can be added to SB/CR or not.

@razorite For SB, sometimes they add fine, but often I'm unable to add any due to some security issue (same goes for Vanilla Visa). For CR, someone said in the recent $3 deal that they used one fine (Vanilla Visa however could not be used).

Where is the Vic love ?

    • It's only the freak states. Tasmania was a deliberate omission. Do they even have Coles down there?

    • I think we abused this offer a bit too much.

  • Will stack up the cards for my tax payment

    • Is it really possible to pay tax to ATO with these gift cards?

      • I thought ATO has blocked these cards?

        • Not ATO. Heritage Bank blocked payments TO the ATO.

        • +1

I paid my Q3 2022-23 tax installment using these cards … hoping to get some more real soon to do same. I can also pay my internet bill online using multiple cards - a good way to get rid of the small balances.

          • @towe0609: How long do you find it takes the balance on the ATO website to update?

Just curious/anxious because I've just paid my first ever installment with a bunch of $100 GCs, and there's no indication that it actually worked!

            • @coxymla: You should have voluntary repayments reflected on your account the next business day, although the ATO does say to give it up to four business days.

During extended holiday periods (e.g. over Christmas, it may take even longer.

              • @WookieMonster: How many could you use to pay the ATO? I used 10 cards and then the 11th,12th both say unexpected error…

Also, one of the cards got stolen. What is the way to take it back from coles mastercard gift card? I have the receipt. Do I just speak to their operator?

              • +2

                @WookieMonster: Thanks for the reply.

I don't know whether this will help anyone else, but I paid in the evening of the 11th and my account shows as being paid on the morning of the 14th, so it looks like it may take up to the 3rd business day even in "normal" times.

    Temporary flybuys, new measures applied.

    • It was only a matter of time!

      • Hey @WookieMonster, what's your best guess for when NSW might get these?

        • +1

          Probably June.

However, with the number of state-specific 10% off prepaid gift cards deals going on at Coles recently, I am starting to wonder whether Coles will stop doing nationwide prepaid gift card deals…

          • +2

@WookieMonster: Thanks… I was hoping for May/June. I wondered if the change from nationwide might have been at the request of the issuing bank (so as to spread the load).

When I was in Chatswood Chase the recent promo in NSW, the customer before me politely ask the service desk if she can use the 10$ Flybuys dollars in her 5x250$ cards and said the service desk was okay about it. It seems the service desk is a manager and made manual override in the system. The lady customer was so happy.

      • Cool thanks I will try my luck not a huge deal just wanted to know Thanks guys

        • $10 off looks like from auto-redeem. It is also working at self serve. I don't think anyone can override flybuys Eftpos payment error towards It.

          • +1

@Neoika: Yes, I got the automatic $10 auto redeem applied at the manned checkout without any fuss or fanfare.

Great deal but i dread dealing with coles employees/manager on a power trip who refuse to authorise a 5x$250 transaction….

To be fair..a woolies manager refused to authorise more than $1000 a day too even though the catalogue states max 5 cards a day…

    • Yeah these promos bring out the power in those managers.

One of them even told me I was not a customer if I buy these cards.

    • +3

I've purchased $5,000 of the $250 cards twice a year for the last few years (My wife and I both purchase cards over several days). The staff have always handed me a leaflet about scams and asked me to confirm I wasn't buying them for that purpose (they probably do so because I'm a grey-haired old man). I explain to them that I use them to get my groceries cheaper, that's all (although I did use some to buy discounted Apple gift cards at Woolies and discounted Amazon cards at Aldi). If you are nice to most staff, they are (usually) nice to you.

Don't forget to logon to the website once you have the cards and put a PIN on each card. It's tedious when you have a lot of cards but puts another obstacle in the way of anyone out to drain your card.

      • Can the cards still be hacked with the pin?

        • +1

Probably, if someone buys something over the phone. Personally, I think it far more likely that people would skim cards and use that information rather than brute force a swag of possible card details and try each one out in the hope that it would have been activated.

      • +2

My issue is why advertise a limit but each store decides to implement their own policy on how much to authorise or enforce their own limit? False advertising?

From my knowledge, it's not a franchise so why is there a difference in policy. Add bad staff attitude to the mix and it becomes a bad experience at a store where I'm just trying to follow the rules based on what's advertised.

Ps I've always been nice to retail staff cos it's a s**t job dealing with people all day.

        • No worries, I understand. Probably the staff are just misinformed. Although, I had heard that people in the past had only been able to purchase four $250 cards when they wanted five. It turned out that they were paying with a debit card and the Bank had a $1,000 EFTPOS limit per day, so four cards was all they could get (total $925.20).

        • +2

It's the only time they get to exercise any sort of power over the customers. I get it all the time from staff from both Woolworths and Coles whenever I buy gift cards.

    • +1

From my observation, it depends on the shop how its being managed. In my local coles, everyone in the selfserve or manned machine has a copy of the code where they need to scan everytime the customer exceeds 1k. A little further away and they need to get someone (not the manager) to scan the code…and furthermore they need to get the manager to scan the code. And oh there is this branch whom the manager advise the staff that customer could only get max of 4.

  • What are the chances of hacking, is it any different like TCN?

    • The longer it is left unused, the more chance.

    • +2

Over the last few years I've routinely had cards activated (and with a PIN) but unused for up to five months as I use them to buy my weekly groceries. That's not to say it couldn't happen. I also check all my card balances via the website each week, so if a discrepancy did show I would report it. It's a lot of work keeping the balances up to date (particularly when you have 20+ cards) but I thrive on numbers (as can be witnessed from my avatar).

  • Why the state discrimination?

    • +9

WA, SA & NT were excluded in the previous 10% off a similar gift card so it's our turn to get 10% off now

      • QLD still missing out

        • +2

Perhaps it's a stock issue and the remaining states would follow later

          • +1

@trixieb: It could also be Coles experimenting to see whether a 10% off prepaid gift card promotion tied to (registered) Flybuys accounts would actually work.

            • @WookieMonster: But why limit it to selected states each time? Would have thought their system would still be able to generate report analysis regardless of states.

              • +2

@Craze: It could be to do with damage limitation if their implementation goes badly wrong, because I do not recall Coles ever running a promotion in their stores that required a registered Flybuys card. Imagine if some people with registered Flybuys cards were unable to actually have the checkout apply the 10% discount on the first gift card they scanned for the entire day… Store staff would bear the brunt of endless complaints (and store staff would probably not be able to fix it themselves, because my understanding is that they cannot override the price of a gift card), and the phones at Coles head office would be melting.

… okay, now I think about it, trixieb’s theory makes more sense, because it is less of a logistical nightmare to mail gift cards to stores in three jurisdictions than eight… which is strange to say, because I found during the recent Vanilla Visa gift card deal that stock levels across all the stores in my region was generally much worse when compared to previous deals.

        • +2

QLD will follow after this week.

  • To confirm: can you buy 5 cards a day, with these 10% discount everyday ?

  • Cool deal, just got a Westpac CC for QFF points so I can smash these to make the $6000 spend

  • Sorry if this asked before..

Can I visit Coles multiple times a say and buy more than 5 or my flybuys cards will block me purchasing more than 5 a day?

And can I use coles gift card to purchase this again ( last time i was able to do so)

    • +1

Can I visit Coles multiple times a say and buy more than 5 or my flybuys cards will block me purchasing more than 5 a day?

If it is anything like the recent Vanilla Visa gift card deal, the checkout will not apply the discount on the sixth gift card you scan for the day.

And can I use coles gift card to purchase this again ( last time i was able to do so)

It definitely does not work for Coles Groceries / Coles Groceries & Returns gift cards, and I have no idea if it works for other types of Coles gift cards right now.

It worked for me when using regular Coles gift cards during the recent 2000 bonus points deal, although someone reported during that deal that a self checkout displayed an error after scanning a Coles gift card as a payment method.

      • +2

I bought coles gift cArd on Macquarie Bank and used it to buy Coles Master Card but you just have to make sure the balance on the coles gift card is enough to purchase the Coles master card as it will not let you do split payments

        • Ahhh I forgot that the error message could have been triggered by attempting to do a split payment at a self checkout…

        • +2

The first sentence in the terms of this offer literally says:

Can you use one of those temp cardboard Flybuys cards (so your spend bonus on your actual doesn't go through the roof)?

    • This promotion requires Flybuys registration and is not available for use with an unregistered temporary card.

  • Has anyone paid vehicle rego with this as a split payment?

    • +1

      I did in person.

      • Sorry not possible in WA unless value of rego is less then $250. Mine is $900 for 1year as i dont want to pay for 3 months ie $240.
I checked this morning with deptt of tpt.
Also cam confirm that used $1000 to buy woolis gift cards via paypal linking. So work out double benefit. 10% on master card and further 3 or 4% for woolis
