I bought this from prev TGG sale. Earcups are a nice fit for me but I can still hear bus and train noise coming throgh with ANC on, more than I thought even with the auto ANC issue. Touch controls (mostly pause and play) registers with a sound but most of the times does not actually pause or play the song and headband does not stay in place as it is a sliding mechanism with nothing to lock in place like XM4. Would definitely recommened staying on XM4 if you already have that

      To add to this:
      - ANC level is set to automatic and cannot be adjusted like you can on the XM4.
      - It is possible that the hinges are less-durable than the previous ones. That's saying a lot considering how prone to breaking the hinges on the XM4 are.

In my experience, it is slightly more comfy than the XM4, given its weight and the design of the earcups. This is not enough to upgrade IMO. You will also be giving NFC up (if that matters to you). I haven't had any issues with touch controls misfiring on my unit.
They don't fold up like the older gens. Carry case has a large footprint.

    • Would you recommend XM5 if you don't have XM4s already then? Besides the price difference, I mean.

  • I find these fantastic at ANC. And audio quality is great too. Onyl issue I have with mine is when I use them connected to my laptop, Absolutely rubbish as a headset. Just doesn't play nice with windows

    • Does the ANC still work if running through a 3.5mm jack though?

      • +1

        If powered on, yes.

    • I've also found them to perform poorly with my PC too, but fantastically with my Switch, iPad and mobile phone.

      I'd highly recommend the headphones.

      • Coming from Galaxy Buds Pro I find the XM5 to be great for audio. ANC is good at reducing hums but I feel disappointed and haven't been experiencing the same performance I've seen in YouTube reviews.
It does a horrible job at detecting ears. If I have it around my neck, my shoulder/neck constantly registers as double tap and starts playing whatever random thing it can.
I don't know if it's just windows is horrible at Bluetooth headsets (buds are unusable) but if PC is in range it steals the connection when I'm on a phone call.
I have teams issues all the time and have to turn it off and on otherwise the mic won't work even though it's detected and set.
ANC does not filter voice in the slightest so is useless in a chatty office. I think I may have set the bar too high but I regret not going Bose.

  • Great ANC on planes, absolutely love mine.

XM4 got restocked as well for $100 cheaper than this

Jumped on this. Got $20 off it with code, so $280 all up. What really one me over (other than price) was the ability for then to fold up and therefore be easier to pack. Also being able to select the noise cancelling level. I'm not really an audiophile, but been wanting a set of over the ear Sony, so a refurbished XM4 for $280 feels like the perfect choice.

  • Can anybody recommend a pair of budget/basic Bluetooth headphones that are over-ear (with some passive noise cancellation). I don't use ANC (causes nausea) so that feature is irrelevant to me.

People used to recommend the TaoTronics brand here on OzBargain (some headphone models in particular IIRC) but that was some years ago when I last went looking, and I haven't seen any mention of TaoTronics of late.

I mainly need them for listening to music on Spotify from my (Windows) computer and (Android) phone. Via Bluetooth.

    • Anything better than these at around this price point?

      • Or perhaps this lower-priced model might work just as well for me?

  • TGG commercial has it brand new for 400

    • And how does one buy through TGG commercial if they are not a commercial client?

I believe I got access through Rest super also.

        • Ah damn, I closed my origin accounts in preparation for leaving the country so no bueno for me now.

I'll have to take the refurbs as my best options now. I'm happy though, silver/white versions seem to be pretty hard to come by and I got em for $379 delivered.

    • Last time I checked - about a month ago - they were $389.

    • Thank you! Picked up a pair

  • this or xm4

    • +1

xm4 is extremely capable. you may get an extra 5% or so out of the xm5

    • Haven't used either, but if you will be using these to make calls I heard they fixed a lot of mic issues with the XM5.

      • +1

Have XM5 and can agree one of the only good things is the upgraded mics.

    • if you make team/zoom calls xm5's mic is noticably better.

  • Thoughts on getting the Refurbished model compared to a new model? How good of a job does Sony refurbish their products? I have never bought a Sony refurbished product before.

  • I'm having a 15hrs flight in two weeks so looking at 1000xm4 vs QC45. A brand new sealed Qc45 on FB market for $300 or this 1000xm4 brand-new at $333 after Ebay 8% coupon and later VAT claim airport?
    Thanks for your opinions!

    • See if you can try them on at a JB store. The Sony earcups didn't fit my ears as well as the Bose so I went the QC45

      • +1

Tried xm4 at JB and confirmed the earcups are shallow and small. This can't be wore for a 5+ hr flisght. Sound quality is slightly better than QC45 but ANC is slightly worse. So I bought QC45. Tested it's ANC & phone calls right away near the trams in Sydney CBD, perfect. Thanks for the advice!

  • I have XM3's is it worth the upgrade?

  • Has anyone used these with Microsoft Teams? Im reading they dont work with it. If anyone who has them or bought them can confirm?
