  • This or 35xx? Hmm…

    • +2

This is certainly more powerful than the RG35XX and good if you prefer the horizontal form factor. The RG35XX has a better display so many games that aren't Gameboy will look better.

      • Are any of these capable of running Super Mario 64 DS smoothly? My son is super keen to play that particular Mario.

        • +13

Honestly just get a ds or 3ds

          • @Odin: Unless i'm looking in the wrong places those appear to be a significantly more expensive outlay than these modern handhelds? When i looked into this a few months ago it appeared as though it would be possible to run it on a Retroid Pocket 3+?

            • @Arsenal: I'm not sure. People were giving away Ds systems a couple years ago.

              Facebook marketplace maybe?

            • +2

@Arsenal: Practically none of the DS and 3DS Games actually use both screens at once. So it's viable to run them via emulation. Something that has a widescreen (16:9) can stack them side-by-side. Or you can maximise the main screen, and switch between the screens as necessary.

The DS Lite is a great system. It's super cheap, very comfortable in the pocket, has really long battery life, and can be hacked to play all systems upto it fine. But no emulation of systems like Sega 32X-CD, Saturn, PS1, or N64. So this ranks lower than these handheld devices.

The new3DS is also a great system. Same as above, but slightly bulkier, pricier, with less battery life. It can do the systems named above, including the NDS. But it can't do other systems like the Dreamcast, PSP, or PS2. So this ranks similar to these handheld devices.

There's also the PSP (v3000) which ranks a bit lower than the new3DS and these handheld devices.

Whilst the PS Vita Slim ranks higher than these, and on-par with the new-gen handheld devices (Anbernic RG 405m, Retroid Pocket 3+).

              What is the best option?
              …to be continued…

              • +1

@Kangal: I love my DS and 3DS collection but they're not the best way to emulate retro collections, even though I have them setup to do so.

I always prefer running them on any one of the dedicated handhelds like this one I've bought over the last few years. The screens are bigger, higher resolution and linux-based ones run EmulationStation for excellent organisation of your huge collection with box-art and video previews, along with descriptions of the game and star ratings from the community.

You can achieve a similar setup on Android-based handhelds like the Retroid Pocket 3+ or Flip and Odin Lite/Pro by installing Daijisho launcher.

For N64, PSX, Dreamcast and PSP, you can run your full collection at 3x or higher resolution, add widescreen hacks to play N64, PSX and Dreamcast in 16:9 which works great for many games.

So while you technically can play up to SNES/PSX era on a 3DS, it's just not the best way to play by a long mile. You don't get save states, options to tweak graphics settings, proper filters and overlays if you want to for example make GB games look like they're running on a specific GB model like the GB Pocket, and the screen just isn't anywhere near as nice as any of these.

For actual DS and 3DS content though, no other handheld is comparable to playing on the OG hardware. Even DS on a 3DS is not great, because the screen resolution is different and the it doesn't integer scale correctly so it ends up blurrier than playing on the original DS. You can hold start when launching a DS game on a 3DS to shrink it to the correct scale, but it's too small to enjoy IMO.

            • +1

@Arsenal: Retroid 3+ will handle any DS game quite well.

Here's a compatibility list for other consoles too. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Vf7SIS7ecWa_J301h0mb…

          • @Odin:

Honestly just get a ds or 3ds

Have you seen the price of them recently?

            https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p238005…

            • @Cyphar: wow… I have got one original NDS and a NDS Lite, i throught they only worth $5-$20 few years ago. how come their price come back up agian? any reason?

        • I haven't looked into it much, but from my understanding the DS port in general is clunky? I know there is a 60fps patch for Super Mario 64 on these handhelds. Most DS games seem to run fine on this.

          • @Clear: As i say its been a few months since i properly looked into it, but i think there was some sort of fix for the controls to make it usable?

      • Do you have a collection of these?
        Which ones do you have?

        • Not as many as you think. Back when those Android TV boxes were a thing I was using them as emulation boxes. In recent times I've been using a Powkiddy V90 with Miyoo custom firmware and a Powkiddy X18S that I picked up for a ridiculously low price.

I have the RG35XX ordered from GeekBuying on the way.

    • +1

Or Miyoo Mini, which has the novelty of being the size of a deck of playing cards.

      • You essentially can't buy the Miyoo Mini though, only the Mini Plus as they ran out of stock of the screens. Sidenote, I have a plus and absolutely love it.

    • 35xx has a 4:3 display which is what you want for majority of games

this one is good if you like GBA games

    • This seems good on paper and the device looks good, but I don't think I could hack that basic screen. I'm looking forward to my 35xx arriving soon.

  • +2

I'll second the point about GBA. This machine is a perfect little GBA device. If GBA is a primary console you're interested in, consider this model.

  • +23

Even if the price isn't the best ever, I'll always upvote emulators on OzB.

      R/roms has a github

    • +1

Assuming you have a computer, for the last 20 years I've found that to be the easiest part of emulation..
Now just searching "SNES Roms", "GBA Roms", "N64 Roms" and there's dozens of sources. Let alone if you have ever used a torrent before. Curate a library with a top 50 from IGN.

    • Out of curiosity how old are you? Even as a kid in the 90's I was downloading ROMS off the internet. I never had a Gameboy so that's how I played Pokemon Red & Yellow. It's one of the best parts of the internet IMO.

  • apart from for factor any difference between the 3 listed?

    • This one is a 3:2 ratio display which mimics the GBA perfectly with no black bars. The others are in 4:3 which works best for SNES.

      • +2

Not only a 3:2 ratio matching the GBA, but 480x320 is exactly 4x the resolution of the GBA, so you should end up with pixel-perfect scaling and no interpolating.

ie. each pixel on the GBA is a 4 pixel box on this, so it's clean.

        • Jesus, I don't remember the GBA being such low res

  • +4

Eh, it's ok. The market moved on, these things are pretty poor compared to even entry level devices nowadays. PowkiddyRK2023 and RP353PS made this kinda redundant, and Miyoo mini 2 plus is just on the horizon.

    • +6

I'm Steam Deck all the way for me personally, but if I had to recommend anything to someone, it's hard to go past the Retroid Pocket Flip. When you've got an incredibly comfortable and pocketable machine, and it can do PSP/DC flawless, you're doing good…but then throw in decent 3DS, GameCube and PS2 support, hell, it can even do a small stack of more basic Switch games. Not to mention the thing is an Android machine, so you've got better (still not the best mind you) versions of the GTA trilogy right there, as well as Max Payne, Bully, and so on, and the bevy of other Android games like COD Mobile and the sort…plus the cloud gaming stuff I didn't even think of, xCloud works great on it, etc.

Point being: Retroid Pocket Flip, or the Pocket 3+ if you don't want the clamshell, offers some hella serious bang for your buck. MUCH better purchase than one of these. RK2020 was doing this level of stuff 3 or 4 years ago and while I got mine for free at the time, it was only going for about 80 AUD if you looked in the right places.

      • I wouldn't put the t618 devices for GameCube. 3ds and ps2. There's alot of fiddling about, needing to use pal roms, going to retro handheld discord to get the community presets for overclocking, etc. Personally, I'll suggest Odin if you're really interested for 7th Gen.

But yeah, I agree with you, retroid devices are the to go to suggestions nowadays. Rk2023 goes for similar price and are far better in general. The 351p is unfortunately 2 years redundant.

      • I ordered a Retroid Pocket Flip (red colour) last week on their website, but still waiting for delivery confirmation.

        • They're starting to get most shipped out now so yours should be soon. I ordered mine the day pre-orders opened (Mar. 22), and only just got my tracking last night lmao.

    • Miyoo mini 2 plus

Seems like only yesterday they released the Mini plus and then quickly kept running out of stock.

    • What would you suggest to play Super Mario 64 DS?

      • +1

        Get a cheap DS…?

        • Having seen the prices on Ebay for those, I struggle to believe that is the best option? Humour me and assume that it might be nice to have functionality to emulate other games after Mario 64 DS.

          • @Arsenal: What prices are you seeing exactly? I'm seeing heaps of Nintendo DS and DS Lite units for under $100

            https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=nintendo+d…

            • @stenchlord: Given the price ranges and age of the devices I assumed those cheaper ones wouldn't be in great shape. In any case it looks like i'd be up for maybe $50 for a copy of the game as well.

I don't really have any interest in a DS myself, and I doubt my son would do either other than to play that specific Mario game, so i'm not really looking to spend >$50 just for him to play that one game. At least with one of these emulator handhelds there are hundreds of games from different platforms available to pique interest after Mario.

              • @Arsenal: You can mod a ds or 3ds, and that lets you emulate or pirate on the device. So that'll let you pay just for the device.

The problem with ds is that alot of core games had the touch screen gimmick, so it's not a really good platform to emulate, even on phones. If you want to play more Gameboy or play station stuff though, the mini miyoo is the usual suggestion for entry level, the the powkiddy v90 as the bare minimum you should go. Just don't expect ds on either of these devices.

                • @Wonderfool: Yeh what he says - DS games need the touchscreen a lot. There are modded rom's to do away with it, but if you legit want the DS version, just get a DS. Then god a mod cart thing and go nuts.

      • +1

        Retroid pocket flip or 3+

      • there's also the switch release too.

        • There is a Switch release of Mario 64 DS? I know there is a switch release of Mario 64 on the All Stars game, but my son is adamant that Mario 64 DS is a somewhat different game to that.

          • @Arsenal: It's different in that it has extra features that is exclusive to ds. Mainly you can play as Yoshi.

    • As a mini plus owner who would like a spec bump if offered, I am curious about your 2 plus comment as I can't seem to find anything on that.

  • Wow, nice. It's been a long time since I bought from Geekbuying on ozbargain. The last time i bought something was the G304 few years ago. Pretty good company.

    Steamdeck killer

    • +3

      more like steamdeck food

  • Just got my RG35XX from the previous deal to go along with my Retroid Pocket 3+

Covers all bases with retro and modern games with game pass with remote play or xcloud

    • +1

Why the RG35xx if you had the retroid?

      • retroid for me, rg35xx for the kid

both are very different though, playing gameboy classic is very nostalgic

        • Fair that makes sense

          • @ONEMariachi: gotta collect them all it seems by checking some of the handheld subreddits

  • steamdeck is the way to go

    • +15

Yeah man, for $700+ extra. Thanks for your input.

    • -2

I had a retroid pocket 2 but got rid of it and got a steam deck.
These devices are cheap.. and also a bit nasty, annoying to update the firmware too.

      • +4

You're comparing apples and oranges. These are cheap by design. Nasty? They play retro games nicely if you ask me, and I think the build quality is surprisingly good.

But yeah, compared to a device that is at least 7 times it's cost, I guess it is.

        • Horses for courses.
But the steam deck as an investment would last longer, and do more things.

That being said, you could also just use your phone and a razor Kiyo controller and it would both look and play better

          • +1

@Commodore64: What do you mean, last longer? I've had one of these for over a year, and it still does what I bought it for. And does it well.

Yeah of course you could use a controller and a phone. But there's downsides there too.

This machine serves a purpose, and serves it well at the price point.

            • +1

@Orion au: It undoubtedly does, it's a good buy for the money.
For those willing to pay more for their emulation pleasure, EmuDeck (Steam Deck) or Mister (DE-10 nano) offer better experiences/

              • @Commodore64: Right. Cool. Yep I agree. I could offer a lot of other options too, which offer a better experience and cost a little more too. It's a little bit off topic though, and barely relevant.

          • +2

@Commodore64: (profanity) no. Neither are good replacements.

There's a huge difference with a pocketable handheld and a big ass steam deck or a phone accessory that takes fiddling to use. It's the difference between actually playing or not playing.

The industry moved on since the rp2. There are some great devices out there that have great build quality and dedicated features for cheap. Even if you buy a phone, put a game dedicated launcher/frontend, and never take the controllers off, it's not going to be feature parity with Miyoo mini, RP3+ or odin. You can take the sbc and make your own Linux handheld and still won't be feature parity. Steam deck is, but it's huge as (profanity), and quick resume won't work in emulation, while it does on miyoo mini and anbernic linux devices.

            • @Wonderfool: Good to know thanks, I found everything annoying about the RP2, with its mediocre screen, cheap feel of controller, and especially the ancient android 6.0 which was a pain to update even when they did release 8.0

  • -1

According to the website below, this SOC RK3266 is 4 times less powerful than a SD845. Seriously doubt it would be able to handle any demanding games. Maybe GBA games max, but only handful of simple PSX games.

    https://obscurehandhelds.com/soc-benchmarks/

    • +4

So you think a 64bit 4 core, 4 threads CPU at 1.5GHz is not capable of playing anything up to the PS1 when the PS1 uses a 32bit single core CPU at 33.86MHz?

We're not talking Android gaming here. We're talking emulation and the CPU in this is more than capable.

Unless you can recommend another handheld for about $110 with an SD845?

SoC benchmarks for handhelds don’t always translate into real world user experience,

First line of your link. I'd recommend checking out some YouTube videos to see how it goes with emulation.

    • +1

It plays PSX fine, and systems beyond that too, albeit as a somewhat compromised experience.

  • Argh!!! Bought the Rg35xx previous deal. Still haven't received it but shattered that I didn't get to grab this instead, for only a bit more :(

    • +1

Honestly, unless GBA is the system you really want to play, the 35xx is probably fine. This'll play some DC, PSP and N64, but the experience is compromised by the screen and the chip. Anything else that this can do, the 35xx will do too.

      • +1

Yeah true dat! Thanks man. I just think that the Rg35xx form factor isn't as good. Bit small to hold . Plus it would've been nice to have the joysticks

  • +1

Considering Ambernic are constantly releasing new models, I'd wait on a cheap RG353M instead. The 351 is just a little bit too slow with PSX emulation, plus 353 introduces hall sticks (no drift) and a higher res 640x480 screen.

  • +3

If you're new to emulator handhelds/Retroarch, a big sell of the RG35XX over this is the availability of the GarlicOS firmware, which is remarkably clean, minimalist, and easy to set up. ArkOS and 351ELEC for this are still great but it's a fair bit more complicated at first.

    • AmberELEC only. Arkos no longer supports 351p. While GarlicOS is nice and easy, but it's vertical and not open source.

  • Overkill for MAME or similar? TIA.

  • +1

Can anyone recommend a console like this but with a bigger screen? My eyes are getting older…

    • Check out powkiddy x55.

    • what price point?

      retroid pocket 3+, anbernic rg405m, anbernic 552

      • From $89.99US

        • i'd give the X55 a bit longer until they've ironed out all of the QC issues and Jelos firmware

  • If one were wanting to spend around $200 on a similar device that could emulate n64 / psp / nds without dramas, has HDMI out and supports external wired controllers (preferable x360 with a wireless dongle as I have one)….what should they buy?

    • +2

Not sure about external wired controllers but I think you'd be looking at Pocket 3+. 5ghz Wifi, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C and HDMI out. Screen and chip far exceeds this one. It's one of the best at the moment.

      • Thanks boss
        goretroid.com/en-au/products/retroid-pocket-3-handheld-retro-gaming-system-1?token=EC-2S943337A21107247

This the unit you're talking about just to confirm?

Looks good, I'll watch a few reviews. Comes to about 230aud delivered.

They also sell the 8bitdo gamepads as an addon and I happen to already have one so that's perfect.

        • Yes this is the one, it's one of the best at the moment. No worries! :)

        • yes, I bought it direct from there recently.

Use this link so you don't get mixed up with the regular 3.

          https://www.goretroid.com/en-au/collections/retro-game-syste…

I used 4PX shipping, arrived in just under 2 weeks

          • @impoze: Thanks buddy, how are you finding the unit?

            • @knk: it's great, set it up with daijisho

I got the grip as well which makes it a bit nicer to hold

So far I've played Celeste, hollow knight via game pass/remote play, Mario kart double dash, and a few more like new mario 3DS,

See if this code from retro game corps still works for $5 off - RGCRP3PLUS

I did also get the screen protector, hall sticks upgrade and dome buttons so I don't have to order later and save on shipping

  • Games from my childhood that I would like to play again:

GTA, Street Fighter 2, Sensible Soccer, Mortal Kombat, Die Hard Trilogy, others I have forgotten…

Would I be able to play these on this device?

    • +1

Probably not GTA, this is not powerful enough. Even the Pocket 3+ which is a lot more powerful and can run a few PS2 games cannot handle GTA very well. The Pocket 3+ is probably one of the leading handhelds at the moment, this handheld is quite weak. You'd be better off spending a bit more and getting the Pocket 3+. The screen and chip in this Anbernic one is not great.

      • +1 on the pocket 3+,

I ordered it direct and received it just under 2 weeks time

  • -3

Emulation handhelds are coming in hot.. The old games are not going anywhere. In a few years, you're going to see these cheaper and much more powerful. I'll buy one when they've reached their peak and then it will be one handheld to rule all retro games. Still to early to adopt, the tech is evolving so quick right now.

    • There's definitely a fatigue in seeing a new model announced from Anbernic, Retroid, etc. every other week. Although if you're after something console specific there are great deals to be had.

This model is great for GBA, despite being two years old. With some tweaking this model can support cloud saving and retroachievements. The lack of wifi is definitely an annoyance with this model.
