Just came across this video about WD Drives… might be worth looking at

    • Thanks!

    • The one in this post is the EFPX version (Red plus), so it is the good stuff (CMR). The Red (non-plus version) is the dodgy ones (SMR).

Did you even watch the video? SMR isn’t the issue. The actual issue does effect Plus drives too.

I did. Did you watch it? "Shipping SMR drives as NAS drives" is the 2nd part of his video at 2 minute-mark. The warning after 3 years operation seems to be Synology-specific right? So not an issue if you run your own server (unRAID or TrueNAS). Correct me if I am wrong though.

@trippy: Yep. In summary WD has it's own HDD health check app called WDDA (Western Digital Device Analytics) and it'll automatically mark any WD HDDs as "Warning" after 3 years regardless of their health….. if you have WDDA enabled.

SSH into your Synology and run the following

            sudo synosetkeyvalue /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf support_wdda no

            Bam WDDA disabled.

            • @Clear: Thanks. I am setting up an unRAID server at the moment. Will WDDA be active in an unRAID array too?

              • +1

@trippy: Nope. It's an app only found in Synology DSM.

            • @Clear: How about QNAP? Does it have something similar thing to run?

              Thanks

              • @BigLeviathan: Synology only. QNAP is fine.

                • @Clear: Oh wow, I should print your comment and put it on the wall, as most people are commenting how bad qnap is (especially after the deadbolt ransomware) hehe….

Looks like qnap will be onboard soon with QTS 5.1 as they will enable this WDDA

                  • @BigLeviathan: If you really wanted to put something nice about QNAP's on the wall, ask jv. He really loves QNAP. Not even joking.

QNAP already have WDDA in QTS. The difference is that it works properly, unlike Synology.

                    • @Clear: Wait?! JV is a real person and not A.I.? I thought he is an A.I….

  • Worth waiting for the ebay 22% off or are these gonna as good as it gets?

    • It was cheaper on ebay last week with the PWE22 coupon when Scorptec had stock: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/777597

    • There is also a listing on AmazonAU for $129, but it is pre-order only since it is temporarily out of stock. Look under other sellers on the right hand side in the Amazon listing.

  • I bought a 12t;b for like $180 a month ago

    • The same model? Was it a used drive?
