Why Does Fortnite Use So Much Processing Power on Xbox in Lobby and Queue?

Over the last few months my kids have started playing Fortnite on our Xbox One X (not series X) and I've noticed that the Lobby in particular seems to use a lot of processing power as the fans really ramp up like a jet engine… a bit weird but perhaps understandable as the lobby graphics look reasonably detailed. The fans seem to quieten down a bit in game so I assume the lobby uses more processing power than the gameplay itself.

But…. this morning they had to join a Queue as the servers are busy, there is a static image on the screen and a timer and the fan has been running flat chat for like half an hour. Why on earth would a static image and a timer be using so much processing power to keep the fan running flat out?

This kind of reminds me of going to some dodgy website and finding your CPU/GPU usage skyrockets and then discovering there is a mining bot embedded in the page.

In the back of my mind I'm wondering if Fortnite has some hidden code that's creating a distributed server farm for mining or some other purpose. Tinfoil hat stuff I know, but stranger things have happened.

Anyone else ever looked into this a little deeper?

  • I’ve never noticed a difference but I’m on PS5. It would be easier to measure on PC.

    • Yeah the easiest way to measure processor utilisation (or GPU) on the Xbox is to just listen to the fans.

  • utorrent a few years (2016?) had a hidden miner in it which ran the gpu at 100%, they never mentioned anything about it at install.
Would not surprise me if fortnite is doing something dodgy and 'forgot' to tell the customer, because remember 'all businesses own all your data'

    • Yeah, I recall something about that.

    • +1

Same thing happens on free Chinese streaming sites. They use an awful lot of processing power just to play a video.

  • Found this reddit thread, they are referring to Series X but still the same issue. https://www.reddit.com/r/XboxSeriesXlS/comments/u86arw/serie…

  • Its fine for me on PC, it could be all the new updates for the OG Fortnite map they where updating the game weekly, i did have an issue where an update reset my graphics settings. Plus they added some other Ray Tracing options i have not seen till recently.

    • It's been happening since they installed the game a few months ago. I can see how the lobby and game might make the fan run at full blast, but when it's doing it on a static screen that's pretty weird.

Who really knows, maybe they mining on your device while you wait, maybe its just really shitty coding.

  • Edit Nvm its console.
