        • Police is a joke!

        • +3

Next time say no. More work for them if they take you to the station

        • +1

Sounds very fishy, how did the police identify himself? I dont think they are supposed to show you other people s ID at least. However it does seem too audacious and unnecessarily risky for fraudsters to get your ID by impersonating the police.

          • +1

@truetypezk: The lady who sold me the gift cards confirmed that they are contracted by coles for security. I also took a pic of their ID albeit there were no names.
Never felt so dirty buying gcs before

            • @Brakus: So they are private security or the Police? I didnt know you can pay the Police to do this kind of stuffs for you.

              • @truetypezk: Their badge shows security industry license. I think they are contracted by coles for security

                • +1

@Brakus: That makes more sense, but I don't think they have any power to force you to produce your ID, especially after the sale has been completed. If Coles want to do it they might be able to record ID as part of the purchasing process but asking ID by coercion after payment sounds wrong on so many levels. Maybe you should post it on social media and demand a formal apology.

                  • @truetypezk: They took a pic of my ID. Im more worried about that

                    • @Brakus: I don't think they are actually going to do anything bad with it if they are genuine security personnels hired by Coles. However it is definitely a violation of your rights and I would be seeking some form of compensation or at least a formal apology if I were you.

                      • @truetypezk: I spoke to the manager after I did my shopping and he said to just file a complaint to coles customer service. I will give them a call when they are open

                • +4

@Brakus: If they security tell them to f off . They are not allowed to touch you , if they do it becomes harrassment /assault and you can file a police report.

If i was you, i would file a police report with all details you have for them to investigate. Its illegal for them to take pics of your id

                  • +1

@easternculture: Seems like they have done this before. They have IDs of other guys buying gcs

                    • @Brakus: Exactly. Its a supermarket item. You cant expect to be harrast if you are shopping peacefully.

        • This seems really dodgy. Once the transaction has been approved and you've paid for the cards and left the store, I don't see how the security would have any jurisdiction over you at all.

          • @rekke: I don't know… Coles staff who sold me the cards and the manager are aware about these guys. The staff told me that they check-in like all other coles staff.
The guy also had a badge

            • @Brakus: This is indeed very dodgy. There are police protocol if they need to do this action. Taking a photo of your receipt and your id can be use as a scam specially if they do not have a proper procedure to store these information. If I already paid and they wont let me go unless they took photo of my id then I will return the gc and ask coles for refund. Certain authorities can ask for your id but taking photo of your id is another matter.

              • @SabreTooth23: I think you should call the police about it, sounds like an identity thief teamed up with one of the Coles staff, if I were you I probably will just call the police (or lawyer if you have access) on the spot

    • Where at?

      • +2

        Coles Norwest

        • Glad I didn't find any stock at Norwest before the deal started to hide them.

  • +3

OMG was that you there ? They said you had been in the store 3 times by gift cards and the undercover guys lead you away. Is everything alright

  • Can I pay to Amex credit card using DEFT? How much is the surcharge?

    • And where does this gift card fit into this?

      • I'm asking the same question. Is it possible use on DEFT to pay?

        • Yes you can use this vanilla visa gift card to pay on deft website.

A lot of people already commented that it works on deft and have said the surcharge.

          • @CodeXD: Ohk.. thanks but I couldn't find surcharge percentage. It's the same as Ato payments.

  • Looks like I did not get 10% off my cards?? I got the last gold $250 and one $100 card from my local Coles.

I didn't check in store cause there was a big line behind me and I was in a rush…
I thought it would apply automatically but I just got home and did the math, looks like I was charged activation fee for the cards but 10% off did not apply?
I used my Flybuys $10 off but i thought this would not exclude the other deal cause I also bought a bunch of groceries.

Will I have to go back in store to argue for the 10% off??
    I am in ACT.

    • +2

You got Coles master cards. These VISA cards which are silver/black packaging and waffle coloured cards. You purchased the wrong product.

      • Oh noo….
Can these be used the same way as the VISA cards? I wanted to pay DEFT using them..
Can they be returned if not?

        • +1

Giftcards sold cannot be returned. Unlucky.

    • +1

If the cards do not look like these, you got the wrong ones

      https://www.coles.com.au/catalogues/view#view=catalogue&sale…

      • Yep.. I got the wrong ones
Can they be returned easily? They are not opened yet.

        • +1

They cant be returned and you didnt lose too much money anyway. Just $5/$7 activation fees and you get some flybuys pts in return. So just take this opportunity and remember to check carefully next time.

          • @truetypezk: Yep.. will be more careful next time.
I fell for it cause the $100 ones were under the 10% off sign and the $250 ones were 1 spot over.

I saw at the store the undercover guy flash a badge from his pocket held his arm and lead him away. I watched him go to one register and then another register then the self service lady reported it to the officer. She said he also came earlier in the day with another guy. I’m not sure what crime he was committing but it was scary

    • Where was this? It seems like they are cracking down on people buying multiple gcs

      • i went to sydney city 2 stores, both said only one transaction, cant buy again in one week.
one store even didn't allow split pay, said new rule.
though only $100 cards available and quite a lot at register

    • where was this ?

    • +4

I’m not sure what crime he was committing but it was scary

Just an OzBargainer buying multiple gift cards. Nothing to see, move along.

  • +2

You need to ask yourself why bring out a promotion of you don't want to sell them. My wife tried to but 5, and they took 1 off her and said the max was 4. I then went and had some stern words to the guys and he eventually put the last one through, When he opened the draw at the help desk it was full of Vanilla cards. So wrong they are hiding them.

  • +2

Coles system stops at $1000 and needs service person to give you scam talk and approve 5th. All good. I’ve done 2 x 5 $250 cards.

Lady said lots of vulnerable people buying gift cards for scams.

not just these cards, I had the same problem/"talk" when the airbnb cards were on sale.

      • Yes, she said they see lots buying Apple gift cards because someone from paypal told them too

Nice you got Coles deal at woolies

Maybe stop trolling and BSing here

      • -2

You dont have to believe me just because you cant find any.

10 per day is only $2500, easy spend with 2 kids school fees, 9 months council, 1 year insurance, tax interest free payment plan/PAYG tax etc plus CC points and flybuys

    • People who are getting 10k+ in value are not as vocal as you on here lol.

      • Im using these right away to prepay essentials for whole year

        • You didn't even read what they said before you replied and proved their point lol

      • +1

Those people who getting 10k+ have either something to hide or have been arrested and taken away.

        • Yeh, because of that its better not to share locations of the coles who have stock so they dont get attention.

        • It mostly likely someone from that store who concerned someone is getting scammed and made an alert. I also suspect that these "undercover police" are actually loss prevention officers and not actually law enforcement. They will nab your id and make you sign waives allowing them to share your identify across a database and sell your data.

They probably thinking your one of those who are stealing cards to purchase them later as stock is magically appearing. Most retails use AI to watch people haven't noticed that automatic doors?

        • Or have a lot to pay the ATO

        • +1

This guy posted on a frequent flyer forum. 335 $250 cards. He hasn't mentioned of any security/police stopping him from buying or investigating him

          • +2

@googoogaga: Making Eastern look like loose change

            • @Sheng: Exactly. But i dont have that kind of cash to buy 300+ - $75000. He is probabaly a business and using them to PAYG tax.

I do wish they had this deal when i was paying off my interest free tax debt of $78k a few years ago over 2 years, would have saved more than a few grand

          • @googoogaga: @googoogaga Can you fwd a link to his post? Interested to read the thread

  • Anyone else having trouble using these at Aldi?

    • I have used it and just pressed the enter when asked for the pin.

New stock at norwest 500+ quantity available

  • Bought some this morning, for some reason needed to scan twice. The first time it would say wrong scan, scanning the barcode for a second time it went through. Happened to all five cards.

Also the self checkout assistant asked me to put them through separately, 2+3, she mentioned additional approval will be required if over certain amount.

    • +1

5 will prompt for a manager's approval I think. If you do 4+1 or 2+3, then only regular staff's validation is required.

      • That makes sense, thanks.

      • The machine locks on $1,000+ transactions. There is a maximum of 5 gift cards per transaction but that's not an issue.

Any assistant should be able to clear the machine locks, no manager required.

    • +1

she mentioned additional approval will be required if over certain amount.

There is a machine lock on $1,000+ transactions but it's only one additional intervention for the assistant. I would bet it's slightly slower to split into 2 transactions.

  • Anybody near Coles NSW postcode 2529, the $250 cards have been restocked this evening. More than 30 cards at 5:15pm 18/3. None of the $100 cards though.

    • Was there 2 weeks ago for the air show. Wrong timing :D

  • My store had stock everytime I visited

    • lucky you!!!

    • +1

Hi it's me, your store. Where am I again?

  • My local store had a box of $250s delivered at 430pm today - just in time!…there was already a Q of 4-5 people waiting for the cards to arrive….as a guess, the box would contain maybe 50-60 cards meaning that the cards will all be gone / sold very quickly eg 30 mins. i picked up 5 more…

  • -1

    Thanks OP.
    Bought 210 cards(using 6 flybuys accounts - 30 a day). Saving of $3832.50

    • You bought over $50k?

      Good way to launder money

      • +1

Good way to save money on payments to ATO.

      Nice

      Well played!

  • Can i use the vanilla giftcard in myer instore to purchase the myer & coles giftcard? With all the issues and possible hack of vanilla gc i prefer to convert it to myer or coles giftcard or maybe use it online and buy another giftcard?

Interesting read about scam around these GCs
    https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.nine.com.au/article/f9bf384…

    • I have heard stories of that kind of attack happening to Activ Visa gift cards as well (back when they were sold at Woolworths).

    • Can report used around 120 of them and didn't have any hacked ones luckily - might be more common in metro areas though.
