Any other cards available with a better point return? Happy to spend 5-6k a month or so for the first few months for a more bonus points and extra perks that come with the card

      • The Black one is good but you have to keep for over 12 months to get the full 130k, if you just want for one year you only get 90k.

        • +1

yeah theres not many more that are higher unless you have an ABN

Black one only 90k points for $225 fee. this one 75k for $195 fee.
Black one has slightly better point per fee ratio, they reduced the bonus points recently, it was 100k base before without holding for 12 months.
Holding 12 months is out of question as they charged full brunt of 2nd year fee.

      • 425 fee-no thx

Qantas AmEx Ultimate: 100,000 Qantas Points (with $3000 Spend in 3 Months), $450 Travel Credit, $450 Annual Fee and with pro-rata of the annual fee

      • wow, that's amazing. so if you cancel say on the 4th month right after receiving your qantas points and using the travel credits you're only paying 1/3 ($150) of that annual fee?

do you know what a "fee free account" is? is that like a savings + debit card account or something?

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: thanks brada

          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: FYI I'm going down this road now. Just met the spend criteria but haven't got my points issued yet, but my initial enquiry via online chat indicates that there won't be a refund issued if the card is downgraded anymore.

Will try their support team again once I receive my points and see how that goes. Maybe a different staff member will give a better outcome.

              • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Yeah, I had read the feedback from both of those guys.
Cancelling the card and forfeiting the $450 travel credit without a guarantee of refund is a risk I don't think I'm willing to take.
I also just asked Chat the question about whether a refund will be issued, not that they should change the card for me. They didn't say that it couldn't be guaranteed, but a straight up no it will not be refunded.

Anyways, will come back here and post an update once my points get issued and see how I go. Maybe I'll hop on a call with them and see if I can get back office to give me something more concrete before doing anything.

                  Fair point.

Good luck. You may struggle to get anything concrete out of them but it's worth fishing for a better answer.

I would have been willing to take the gamble and let you know how I went … but they rejected my application 😂

                  • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Lol. Better luck next time buddy.

                  • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Okay another quick update. I noticed this morning that the bonus Qantas points are already reflected in my AMEX account so I called in to ask what happens to it if I cancel or downgrade my card. They told me that the points will still transfer across at the end of the statement period. I then asked whether I could get a refund on the annual fee in that scenario and they said that they could but I would forfeit my Qantas points as well as any other benefits that I received, which there were none in my case but I guess if you used the travel credit then you'd be asked to pay for it, which essentially just comes out of the refund.

I'm going to hold my card until after the points transfer across to my Qantas account and try again. I'm anticipating that they would just tell me at that point that I can't get a refund but who knows, maybe I'll get lucky with a partial refund or something.

                    • @coldazure: Personally I don't think the customer service agents really know what they're talking about and I would take the gamble. But good luck whichever way you decide to go.

                      • @UrMumsOnlyFan: Okay so just called them, the guy on the phone was immediate in their response to my question of whether I could get a refund at all so there's a very high likelihood they know what they're talking about. The reason I can't get a refund is because I have claimed the 100,000 Qantas points. You must not have used any of the perks, including the travel credits or the bonus points if you wish to get a refund by cancelling or downgrading the card.

                        • @coldazure: Confidence does not necessarily equal competence. I've received plenty of wrong advice from companies that was delivered confidently :)

Perhaps they are correct, perhaps not. Perhaps they're correctly reciting what they are meant to say, even though the system or process may not actually work that way. There is certainly cause for reasonable doubt given the recent experiences of Ehty and gadgetguy.

Ultimately there is still only one way to know for sure. However, it is entirely understandable if you don't wish to risk proceeding with the attempt based on what they have told you.

                          • @UrMumsOnlyFan: I make my judgement based on information I have and there is enough consistency there for me to accept the high likelihood that it is what they say.

Good luck to whoever wishes to take the plunge.

        • I just tried this and it was a firm no from Amex. They must have cottoned on to this.

          • @deale: it certainly looks that way. i'm keen to hear if anybody still managed to somehow sneak through with this trick after the fact though.

          • @deale: Did you only enquire about it, or did you actually change card types?

ANZ seem to be the strictest lately. They ask for every little variance in your payslip

    • +1

Easy to get around by having your pay go into an ANZ account.
Since doing this they have been so quick to approve my last 5 cards.

      • +1

This is the case with me. Applied for a black card, got interrogated and still got rejected.

        • +4

Yep same with me here, been churning multiple ANZ cards for many years and got rejected the first time this year. My payslips are banked into ANZ as well. Had a lot of dramas with this year's overseas staff, wonder if that's a key factor… … 🤔

          • +2

@roberto7: Yes the offshored staff are a killer with NAB too.

Had to AFCA them twice in 3 months and won both times. It's still cheaper for them than hiring locals. Disgusting banks with multi billion dollar profits and still offshoring.

            • @arcticmonkey: that's interesting… would you care to share more about this - was that regarding a credit card application that got declined, or bonus points not accruing etc?

I couldn't visualise what levers AFCA were able to pull in this context, keen to know.

              Thanks in advance

              • @roberto7: AFCA have saved me numerous times.

The most recent was regarding a 2nd year annual fee being charged by NAB/Citi despite me cancelling within the statement period.

Raised several complaints over many different channels and it was only when AFCA stepped in that it was resolved.

AFCA is the saviour of the offshored messes the banks have become.

@arcticmonkey: Thanks for the update…. good thing we have forums like this to band together!

Totally agree with this. I've applied for ANZ, Amex and Virgin money credit cards in the past 6 months. I couldn't believe the hoops that i had to jump through to get approved for ANZ when the other credit cards were approved with very little hassle. Every expense that i had entered in my application was cross checked with my bank statement. Of course i had only put rough estimates, so over the course several days and multiple calls from them, they gradually confirmed expenses with me and amended my application details until they were satisfied before approving me.

    • The most crappy also

    • +2

American Express the worst now. Recently started rejecting credit card churners based on number of cards over past X period of time. Just copped it myself despite not even having an Amex for 3 years.

    any velocity cards?

  • +2

I found ANZ simply too hard to deal with in making a card application - querying all expenditure - multiple contacts from them re more information to the stage where said I am cancelling my application.

I had previously held ANZ black and my self employed ABN company income is well in excess of what they require. No such issue with other providers when churning cards.

Is it because it's black? That's RACIST

    Agree. Anz sucks.

  • Whats the best one to apply these days after citi? Looking for easy approval

    • Was citi easy to be approved?

What happened to 60-70k point cards without fees… $295 fee is killing this deal.

    • Gotta make money somehow.

    • One of the best deal I had (2021 and 2022) was CitiBank for $3000 Spent + $0 Fee for 60K Velocity.

Second best was Virgin Money: $65 fee for 129 voucher, 100k velocity points and 30k bonus on the top from VA.

  • Is it true that the upcoming change (to QFF) will be in addition to the Classic Flight Reward program, which will not see any changes to its value or seat availability?

    • It's currently expected that Classic+ will be in addition to the existing unchanged classic rewards.

Internal documents provide clues of Qantas’ new frequent flyer scheme

      • Thanks for the link! I wonder if this would increase or decrease the value of QFF points

"The same flight would cost 800,000 points using Classic Plus – nearly three times as many points" for Classic

        • If classic rewards remain unchanged then I don't see Classic+ having any significant effect in and of itself.

Of more interest is whether Qantas will expand or restrict the supply of points in any way.

  • What is currently the best use for ANZ Rewards points?

  • I have received bonus Qantas Point from the Qantas AMEX Card 2 months ago and the card is still active.
Question, am i eligible for another bonus Qantas Point when applying for this card?
    Thanks
