Upgrade by Individual Parts or Buy Pre-Built - Gaming 1440p 144hz

Hi all,

Been seeing lots of CPU & GPU deals and have been wanting to upgrade my PC for quite some time. Looking to play Helldivers 2 with 1440p 144hz.

I am looking to replace GPU,CPU,RAM and motherboard.

Current specs:
GTX970
Coffee Lake i5-8600k
16GB Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX C16

I have a mid tower NZXT H710 and a corsair HX750i PSU which I thought I could use, and just replace by purchasing individual parts.

Should I just try to sell the current system as whole and purchase a pre-built?

I'm running Helldivers 2 at 1440p and can only get 100fps with settings on high. With a 7800x3d, 32GB RAM and a 6950xt. Unless you have $2k+ to spend probably need to aim a bit lower.

But I'd say you're probably looking at a similar price depending on if you build or buy prebuilt, depends on your own confidence.

Your pc is like 6-7 years old, your pc is close to worthless.

Your gaming experience largely depends on your video card, if you put the majority of your budget to a 4080 prebuilt system you will be much better off.

  • Sell.
Use that money for current gen stuff.

    CPU - 7800X3D - $520
    Gpu - whatever you want
    SSD - $150 2tb m2 NVMe
    Case - $130
    PSU - $150
    Mobo - $250

  • Looks to be a well-balanced system as-is, but definitely old.

You could start with a cheaper GPU upgrade like a used 3070 and see how it goes, but you might get more mileage by selling as-is and building from scratch or a Techfast/BPC prebuilt anyway.

  • Saw a recent post that sony is doing some big changes to the game that requires you to have a psn account or sth.

With regards to your question, I would never upgrade an entire system for that one game you want to play. At most, I’d look in to a capable gpu and given that its a multiplayer game, think about lowering graphics such as some settings on it for a faster fps and refresh rates. (Newer mid range 3070/4070).

  • remember kids that the DRM on HD2 (nprotect) runs at the kernal level, they own your entire computer and everything on it
and if they ever say they uninstall do they really? really?

  • Since I am in no rush, I wonder if I should start gathering parts as they go on sale…

Or just heck it and go pre-built from the ozbargain deals
