[SA] Orthodontist for Kid - Which Private Health Should We Choose?

Help! We just got a quote from an orthodontist for our child who is 10-13 years old. The quote starts at $9,000. We’re wondering if buying private health insurance would help with the overall cost or not? We don’t currently have private insurance.

Orthodontic treatment typically isn’t covered by basic extras cover. You usually need to purchase slightly more premium Extras cover to get that benefit.

Orthodontic rebates from private health insurance range from a few hundred dollars to over $2,500. There's no one size fits all policy so you will need to shop around to see what cover fits your kid. For eg If they happen to also need glasses & major dental work, and the Extras cover includes optical + dental then you'll see more benefit out of your Extras.

If you're purchasing Extras just for orthodontics (and not claiming on the other benefits) then there might not even be a net saving, but you might end up spending more money overall.

No unless you'll use it for other things. Go look at some policies, you'll quickly find there is a 12 month waiting period and fixed coverage for orthodontics per person. It generally costs more for the insurance than it does any single item on the list for extras, so you've got to make use of a lot more than one item for the kids.

    (1) 12 Month Waiting Period
    (2) The cheapest Bupa SA extras family cover, with orthodontics, for 12 months costs $1678.80/ year before rebate.
    (3) Orthodontics claim limit is $600 per person, $1,200 lifetime limit applies.

$1678.80 paid - $600 claim. You are still over $1000 worse off (before rebate), in addition to having to wait 12 months.

You are better off just paying out of pocket, private health exists to make a profit, not make it cheaper for you.

$9000!!!!! For what? Gold plated braces?

You need another quote. Happy to recommend who we went through. Make sure you tell them it's a price comparison.

Our kids was $6900 and his teeth were terrible 😳. But you wouldn't know it now.

Dont bother with extras. Waste of money. Just pay in instalments.

    • I don't think my kid teeth is too bad, this clinic is quite new and clean. I might get another quote then.
