Had to get one of these as my wife can't handle my ox-like strength bending spoons scooping Ice-cream in my journey to becoming a fatty. Its too distracting for her, I get it.

Looks to be a real solid unit, with heaps of good reviews.

Dishwasher safe - you got me.

    The one I brought are crap falling apart plastic handle & silver peeling off junk.

      Yeah same here, I want a proper steel/aluminium one. Ours is still usable but the coating is flaking off, like chrome used to do on cars and bikes.

      Yes a lot of kitchen utensils I have always have the handle dislodge, it's very annoying. I now look for one piece all metal stainless construction. None of those rubbish soft touch grip it won't last and poorly for the environment. Get a all metal stainless never rot last a few generations.

    I guess this begs the question. What is so special about the Zyliss one?

    Not saying this one is bad, but there do seem to be a lot of cheaper options on Amazon, some from reputable brands for cheaper.

        Lol nah, looked at some of the above and went with this bad boy. I'd rather go a half price premium than a full price mid-tier.

      I prefer the one piece single material like the Avanti one you linked, no grot to get stuck in between places after time.

      For anyone who don't care about brands plastic is $6.59 and metal is $8.25.

      I prefer the design of the Zyliss; the front part of the scoop is less curved which makes it easier to push into hard ice cream as you can push with a forwards motion rather than a scooping motion.

      The large lip where the handle meets the scoop also makes it easier to push down as you don't have to squeeze the handle as hard to prevent slipping.

      With small quantities of softer ice cream, I just use a dining spoon.

      • Yeah the angle was a big selling point for me too. Used to have a more angled one in the past and the force doesn't align well. Could hurt ya wrist if the ice-cream was real solid.

      • I did some research and ended up getting this one. It is not dishwasher safe, which sucks, but it really digs into ice cream well - even the stuff that has frozen solid in my freezer that I'm just not realising is maybe set too cold 🤔

      Evaluated all those including the Zeroll one made of aluminium and the fluid inside but went with this:

      best scoop ever (fight me!). stainless steel, can be put into the dishwasher. the teeth on the front dig into ice cream well and the diamond pattern works well to stop it sticking.

    This is the scoop make I would recommend for smooth quenelles. It has liquid inside to rapidly transfer heat to the scoop. Not dishwasher safe, but given it takes 10 seconds to wipe with a soapy sponge that shouldn't be a deal breaker for too many.

      Few years ago, it was one of the white elephant presents in a work Christmas group. Everyone wanted it, but I got it. It’s really good. Just don’t put it in the dishwasher

        The detergent ruins aluminium, so anything aluminium usually isn't dishwasher-safe.

          Yeah, aluminium for the thermal conductivity. Steel stores a lot of thermal energy but doesn't transfer it particularly quickly.
          As a side note: this is also good for scooping cookie dough and it will release in a similar way albeit more slowly than a scoop of ice cream.

            @Bdawg: Aluminium has higher thermal conductivity than steel which means it transfers heat more quickly; the idea is to transfer heat from the room-temperature scoop to the ice cream to soften it making scooping easier. Once it reaches thermal equilibrium it won't make a difference, but you can equally heat up the scoop again with water more quickly than steel.

            Heatsinks for computer and electronic parts are made of aluminium for the same reason.

              @eug: This is correct. In a café I worked at we once hired a guy who had previously worked in an ice cream shop and he schooled me on it.

              It's not only the the aluminum. These type of scoops typically have a type of food safe antifreeze in the handle which get's warmed up by the hand and is transferred to the ice cream (via the aluminum) to aid in scooping.

              The best way to scoop multiple scoops of ice cream (assuming it is not rock solid) is to fill a jug with room temperature water and let the the scoop sit in there between scooping. This way the ice cream doesn't melt too much and doesn't stick to the scoop.

              If you heat the scoop the first scoops are too melted and they sit longer than the others so they end up even more melted.

      It's the sister who swings by, opens the new gift that isn't hers and uses it once on Christmas Day then puts it in the dishwasher and wrecks it.

      She does the "wah, I'm just a girl, how was I supposed to know, no one told me" thing at 50 plus, your Dad calls you an idiot for not buying stainless and Mum loses one of her Christmas gifts without even using it once.

      I got her the Zeroll because she is in her 80's and the hand warmth and liquid really do help her wrists when she serves all the seated bastards. Had to buy a second one, that took a few weeks to come, to prove it.

      But I'm not mad. It was my fault apparently.

          She has her good qualities but god I was annoyed.

          The replacement has gone well. All the grandkids take charge, won't let it out of their sight once out and wash it for her after "the incident".

      Though DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES put it in the dishwasher. Not only will the aluminium finish be damaged, the phase change liquid in the handle will be damaged.

    The cheapy Mint branded scoop I bought from Woolies 5 years ago is still kicking, stills scooping. I'm all for prosumer kitchen accessories but ice cream scoop I think is safe to cheap out on.

    • Does that work well on hard ice cream as well? Say you take the ice cream out of the freezer and immediately try to scoop it? I have a non-branded scoop but its gets stuck while scooping since the ice cream is too hard.

    Best Ice Cream scoop on the market, just rinse under warm water after use. Had for over 10 years.

    I had this. Didn’t love it. And it’s not super dishwasher safe, as the metal bit will get all pitted.

    I replaced with a Zeroll one. Love it so far.

      This is true, although it applies to any aluminium item including the Zeroll.

      • Yeah I hand wash my Zeroll only now.

    My solid stainless steel scoops works better for me. I’ve had a couple of chrome versions and found that the chrome peels off after a while. (And ends up in the ice cream)

    If your icecream is rock solid, take a look at the temp setting on your freezer. I didn't realise mine was on max, and turning it down made the icecream the perfect softness, while still keeping everything else frozen.

    I do not understand this scoop thing.
    tub -> spoon -> mouth -> stomach

    scoop is superfluous

      A good scoop makes for a neater serve as well esp on cones and such or with home made ice creams you want to present well.
