In exchange, you get an IKEA refund card, ready to use on something you need now. Better yet, IKEA Family members earn 50% on the Buy-back value from 2 May – 3 June.*

How IKEA Buy-back works

Determine what you want to resell. Only unmodified, completely assembled second hand IKEA furniture is accepted for buyback. Refer to the lists of eligible/ineligible products below. For ineligible items, consider reuse, donation, selling via online marketplaces or recycling.
Use the buy-back estimator tool. Find what IKEA furniture you’re interested in selling and tell us its condition. You’ll get an estimate of what IKEA will pay to buy back your furniture.
Make sure your furniture is clean and assembled, ready for its new home. Bring it and your estimate to the Exchange and Returns section of your nearest IKEA store.
Pat yourself on the back. You’re helping us prolong product life, promote second hand furniture and waste less. Thanks for contributing to making IKEA more circular and to becoming people and planet positive!
Your IKEA Refund card can be used in any Australian IKEA store, or on IKEA.com.au. Your refund card is valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

      no. you do a estimate quote on the website and they double check the furniture when you are there.

    Why would someone return something that was "loved"? - Can't stand this term for people hocking usually, old and useless stuff.

    Should be "pre-hated" if anything.

      Why would you re-assemble 2-3 times a fully assembled piece, flat-pack or otherwise?

        They specifically state that your used IKEA product has to be returned fully assembled, after which they'll obviously disassemble it for sale.

        By the time a future customer buys it, it's been assembled then disassembled and reassembled (possibly even more times by the original owner). That's really not ideal for a lot of the flimsier IKEA furniture, especially when it's predominantly made of particle board/laminate/MDF.

          Incorrect. The pre loved section is all completely assembled. As is. Once a customer purchases, they decide what to do with it (eg take assembled as is or disassemble themselves for transport).

          we hired a truck and took the smaller stuff over by car, didn't disassemble anything

        I can't find any mention of that on their website but if that's the case, that's honestly even worse. Moving around fully-assembled IKEA furniture on a trailer or flat-bed ute is just asking for trouble. There's a reason flat-pack furniture is sold disassembled from the manufacturer; it's specifically not designed to be transported when fully-assembled.

            Although my last visit I didn't see any good deals. Depends on what happens to be available at any point in time

    What are IKEA actually doing with the furniture? Sending to landfill to promote further sales?

      Name checks out! They send it to the As Is section near the checkouts for people to buy. Its a bit like an opshop, you never know what's there but sometimes theres a bargain

          If its through the buy back program, yes everything. Some things arent eligibile though as per T&Cs. If you were to return something under "warrenty" because it was broken then they would obviously not be able to sell that on and that would get dumped.
          This post is about the buy back program though…

    Someone was bragging on unethical life tips that they purchased new covers for their couch prior to trade-in and then returned the old ones. Made their couch look "new".

    Doesn't seem worth the effort but to each their own.

    Last time this deal was on i found 3 bookshelves on fbook for 50 each.
    Took them to ikea and got $690 store credit for them

      From experience they'll take it if it's a bit worn with minor scratches or chips, but not if it's dirty

    This to me is the biggest fraud of all time. I took a wardrobe which had a tiny scratch (not even visible without knowing) and they offered me to recycle for free. WHAT A JOKE. All that time to take it to store and back!
