  • Good price. $4/kg is my benchmark for this salt.

    • +11

How much salt do you use, that you have a benchmark for this one in particular?

    • +2

This salt is over 2,000,000 years old.
Expiry (best before date) on packaging: 2 years! :)

      • +3

Blame somewhat stupid food laws for that

      • when its exposed to the atmosphere it absorbs moisture

we had a lamp made of this shit that was never turned on much, made a mess!

        • +1

Correctly stored Honey and salt will last forever. :)

Salt does not expire. The microbes that lead to spoilage and food poisoning all need water to grow. But pure salt doesn't contain water, which means it never goes bad. But there's another reason salt doesn't expire: It's toxic to most microbes.

“Honey stored in sealed containers can remains stable for decades and even centuries!” Honey is also antimicrobial

    • Yep I can't even make it for $3/kg.

  • +4

What's the Himalayan pinkness going to do for me that other salt doesn't?

    • +24

      Empty your wallet quicker.

      • +1

And make your insides more pink. not

    • +4

Apparently it’s better for high blood pressure than regular salt

    • +5

The natural harvesting process allows pink Himalayan salt to possess many other minerals and trace elements that are not found in regular table salt. Some people estimate it may contain up to 84 different minerals and trace elements.

      • +5

Which ones do I not get in the food I eat every day?

        • Haha mate. Most of it. All people - Stop consuming table salt which is deprived of all microelements/trace minerals. You have only sodium and potassium. For proper body functioning we need the above elements.

          • @Palmax: Man cannot live on salt alone.

          • +1

@Palmax: I agree that the soil is now so depleted that vegetables are pretty nutrition-free, but you're not going to make it up with Himalayan salt given that it's also low in nutrients or trace elements that you're kidding yourself thinking it's supplemental.

      • +22

watched a doco a few yrs ago on Himalayan salt, literally the "trace" minerals were so low, it was negligible compared to normal sodium, you had to eat deadly amounts of himalayan salt to get any benefit of those trace minerals. https://youtu.be/h23rF0xrhTE?si=09cULDKnd6ruKY4c&t=379

        • This is correct. It's pretty, though, and it is nicer than supermarket salt (in general).

        • +2

Just eat little bit at a time, by the time you reached 80, you get the extra little benefit than regular salt eating person. 😉

      • +2

If they have to estimate and can't determine they are there by testing then they're probably not :D

But anyway, yeh while they do have more minerals you'd need to consume so much salt for it to be a significant intake that it probably doesn't matter.

    • About this item
Great for detoxing your body, helps lower blood pressure and is iron-rich
Great option as a healthier alternative to over processed white sea salt
Perfect for BBQ's or on seafood and salads
      Creates an enchanting flavor
      Helps food taste amazing

      I'm going to add another
      * Great for guest face

    • +2

Give you a good dose of lead, aluminium and a few other metals

    • Most himalayan pink salt are worse than normal table/cooking salt available at supermarket due to himalayan pink salt having very little trace of Iodine. Iodine deficency can be a very serious issue.

      • -1

Oh you seriously think artificial iodine from table salt to be your source to be your best source.. good

I personally prefer Celtic sea salt, it has 70+ Minerals , not only Na and Cl

        • -1

Oh you seriously think artificial iodine from table salt to be your source to be your best source..

What's "artificial iodine"? I thought alchemy was a fairy tale.

      • I rather suspect that iodine buffered salt is to stave of problems in people with really, really poor diets. What do we have to worry about next- scurvy?

  • 1kg at $2.99 !?

I feel like becoming a Prime member for this deal :-)

Surprised anyone on Ozbargain isn't a prime member.

  • +1

Himalayan salt from Thailand? Am i missing something?

    • +5

Now read "Hi-mala-yann~" in Thai accent

    • The company “Chefs Choice” is based in Thailand - just a typical Amazon product info section error

But Himalayan salt isn’t even from the Himalayas - it’s mined in Pakistan, about 300km away

      • Pakistan and India used to be the same..

        • +1

And when they divorced they moved the mountains?

          Impressive

  • Thanks OP. Ordered one. Now looking for a grinder

    • +1

I can vouch for the quality of these (Peugeot bistro) - good discount.

      • +1

$21 alternative on Amazon if you don't want to spend over $50
        https://www.amazon.com.au/XQXQ-Premium-Adjustable-Core-Salt-…

      • Why the heck does a grinder cost that much?

        • +1

Because people will buy it and say it's a good deal

        • +1

Same reason why some people buy pink salt when they can buy much cheaper normal salt.

          —-

These Grinders are built to last compared to typical ones.

Some people care about well made, real quality and long term value (eg. durable/ reliable + time efficient + frequent use) of select items they buy - such as these.

    • +1

The IKEA ones are pretty good (and cheap) and you can 3D print the part for it if it breaks :-)

    • I bought these https://www.amazon.com.au/Rechargeable-Automatic-Adjustable-… about three months ago. They are excellent. USB rechargeable. Massive grind volume. Solidly built (much better than my old Russel Hobbs from HN), especially the drive mechanism sounds very different to the elcheapo ones. All this brilliance is backed by a peculiar 18 month warranty. Go figure!

    • I bought this from Woolies about a year ago when they had a clearance on the chilli/garlic salt, expecting to throw it out once I was done but it’s held up really well unlike this which is rubbish.

  • awesome time make everything pink and salty

  • +3

For those without Prime, price matching Harris Farm.

    • +2

      Thanks for this!

I've been finding a lot of good deals
and great products at Harris Farm,
in the last couple of years
(much better than shopping at Colesworths).

      • Woolies has 1kg salt for $2.

      • +2

Same! I used to think it was just an expensive supermarket, which it can be if you do your whole grocery shop there, but they have some great sales and their imperfect picks are have saved me so much money.

      • 12/kg for brisket and I dont need to buy a packer

4kg for wings marinated or not

        10 for 2kg for tenderloins

        30 for wagyu rump steak

They had vac packed tenderloins cheap a couple of months back

        $12kg for belly pork

Their specials arnt weekly either but I cant find their end day

  • Haven't finished the Pink salt from Costco a year ago but bought anw.

  • -2

What's the expiry on this salt

    • +1

      salt don't expire 😭

    • +1

      it’s a million years old

  • Oos

    • It was OOS, then went back in stock 10 minutes later. Weird.

      • +3

Quick call to Thailand for more

        • No matter what comments, OZBs are buying,, lets order more 😀. Thailand to supply Himalayan salt, bit weird.. anyway..

    • There's no more salt left in the himalayas?

  • +1

Who is the chef, and why is this their choice?

  • +5

The mineral impurities that give it a pink color, often promoted as healthful, are far too low in concentration to help with your nutrition. You would have to eat a lethal amount of sodium to achieve helpful quantities of the other minerals.
    Lol
And the best one (not my joke)
Himalayan Pink Salt was formed over 250 million years ago…
    will expire in three years.

    • +3

It's an interesting rabbit hole to fall down ;)
      https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8857111/Warning-tox…

some pink salt samples contained aluminium (up to 19mg/100g) and lead (up to 0.26mg/100g, with one sample exceeding national contaminant levels) - both heavy metals that are harmful if consumed long-term or in excess.

All of the Australian-sourced pink salt samples showed lower levels in essential nutrients and non-nutritive minerals, including heavy metals.

While the research found pink salt contains more nutrients than white table salt, consumption needs to exceed the recommended sodium limit by more than 500 per cent before gaining any meaningful contribution to the diet.

      • Shrug. Better than nothing still. Especially people like me who doesn't care about balanced eating at all

        • +1

Normal salt is cheaper though, so it makes zero sense

      • Advice taken, and I'll feel rest assured I'll be getting a meaningful dose of trace minerals by consuming this recommended 500 percent salt intake.

  • +1

Back in stock. Nice find OP.

  • +3

    Thanks, Mothers Day sorted.

    • +1

      Salty

  • +2

It's not showing the option for S&S?

  • +1

    Chicken salt taste better

  • I thought all the health nuts followed psuedo doctors and were on Celtic salt?

  • +2

Different brand but 2 for $5 on Catçh if you have OnePass. Or 30 for $60 by using $15 off $75 promo. Salt for life!

    • +1

Eat 30kg of salt and it might be a much shorter life…😉

    • Thanks mate. Got it

  • +1

In the 80’s and 90’s, people used to buy decorative figurines, lamps, and other items made from these pink salt crystals from Pakistan.

When those became unfashionable, the salt was resold as a fancy table salt.

I’m sure once the pink salt fad dies down (and it will), Pakistan will find another way to sell it to westerners.

    • -2

It's fine, atleast they don't use Cow Urine in spices iike India.
