Specialized Prevail 2012 Bicycle Helmets $150 [50% off RRP] [BNE] [Limited Stock]

50

Was in at Planet Cycles ('Gabba, Brisbane) yesterday, and picked up a Specialized prevail helmet for half price @ $150 (well, a few cents under) (RRP $299).

They are 2012 run outs, and had only a few (< 10) in limited colours (blues and purples from memory).

Picture indicative only. Suggest you call them to find out what they have.

Who pays $300 for a helmet, or even $150!? Doesn't look much different to mine which was $50 and i still felt i paid too much.

    • Mine was $25 from BigW and does the same job
However its like comparing a Datsun with Porsche. How overpriced that Porsche is, well thats another question.
The bike helmet in the picture looks like its still plain Styrofoam with fancy colored plastic.
      Just my opinion

How often do you crash at 80km/h going down a hill and survive with a $25 helmet?

        • +8

All helmets sold in Australia have to meet the safety standards. Besides any helmet is not going to protect you too well in a high speed crash you just described.

        • I know the answer - Once in a life.

      • besides brand, you are paying more for design/materials - shell strength/toughness/durability, ventilation, aerodynamics, weight

Who pays $600 for a phone when a $50 one does the same job.

      • I don't mean to be rude. but it really depends on what you want to do on the phone.

Emails, surfing, and for some, taking pics of everything in their life and constantly uploading to Facebook for the whole world to see, $50 phone might not cut it.

        That's just my opinion.

        • That's exactly the(his) point!!

You want to ride with your kids in the park, buy the $5 one.

You want to ride 60km/ph, you need something a bit better.

  • Aldi have got helmets on sale 27/04/13, $16.99 with an led rear light.

  • Just saw some helmets in the recent Aldi catalogue at $16-ish.

Couldn't find them on their website just then, but I assume they're selling or selling soonish. Under $17 in any case.

They are quite good, from experience.

These things are mass produced using machines. They are using very basic materials and aren't gold or silver-lined.

Perhaps this Specialized model has ultra low weight for those looking to save every gram, or perhaps the aerodynamics are better or comfort or strap or something else, but I've never seen much value in the more expensive models, particularly since the normal RRP of the helmet here can buy you a half-decent entry-level bike with good components; heavier, more advanced materials and costs a lot more to manufacture, assemble & deliver from overseas than any helmet. Basically, a lot more work involved and a lot more value.

$150 is still about $135 too much for this tight observer.

People can purchase helmets for $5 in Melbourne to go with the official bike share system from 7-Eleven and other locations. Pretty sure these would have to be australian type approved.

No idea how comfortable these would be though!

i reckon it's all in brand and marketing, i bought my helmet for $39 from REID Cycles and that was on sale as well, it does do the same job, hot words like mesh, 16 hole ventilation, polycarbon blah blah, they are all made of almost the same interior materials that kind of look like "black Styrofoam" but denser, paying 150 for a helmet is insane, imo anyway.. if you're gonna stack it for going 60km/hr you should of probably invested in a motorbike or vesper instead, i've only really topped 30km/hr on my cycle =...

      Ignorance is bliss apparently.

  • I wish I bought this instead of my Giro Savant, this is an awesome helmet.
