It is a ZTE MF-70A . No battery. No AC adapter included in the Coles pack.
The 1GB lasts for 30 days.

ZTE devices can usually be unlocked for free.

It was a bit expensive compared to devices with battery and display, or even a cheap Android phone. But at $10 …

      where to unlock for free?

  • +2

Just a heads up that this ZTE model requires a 16 digit unlock code.

The free unlock keygens all over the web only generate a 12 digit unlock code which works with older ZTE models but won't work with this model.

You'll need to use DC Unlocker to unlock this model with €7 of credit.

    • Hoops….

      • what hoops? just pull a random flybuys leaflet off the counter, and scan the temporary card.
Activation is only needed for the points. And who spends less than $30 at the supermarket?

          People with $29?

In that case you can't afford to buy this anyway, because you'll be needing an extra $10 anyway.

  • Do the Chinese get to track evey webpage you visit too? "Find another vendor if you care about your intellectual property"

  • is it sufficient to power these (eg. ac->usb adapter) in order to use the wifi hotspot capability, or does it have to be plugged into a computer first, and the software configured? Manual is a bit vague there

    • This adapter will work and can be activated without being plugged into a computer first, so it's useful for tablets, smart TVs, wifi media players and mobile phones. Any USB power adapter should work. Use an old iPod/mobile phone charger, or a powered USB hub.

A default wifi network name and password is printed on the device, so as soon as power is applied it starts up into a default wifi router configuration. You can log into that wifi network and use the password to connect. If your connected device has a browser you can activate the internet service online. Otherwise, you can call a phone number to activate it. Useful for media boxes etc.

You would need to use a computer to change the wifi name or password, but it can be done via wifi. It never needs to be connected directly to a computer.

The USB power adapter supplied with the OfficeWorks MF-70 supplies 1 amp but as USB is supposed to only supply 500mA, I think 500mA should work too. The ZTE website says the MF-70A is identical to the MF-70, it just doesn't come with a power supply.

  • Hmmm.. now I have to decide whether to return the MF-70 I purchased from OfficeWorks last week, and buy this instead. Is the USB charger and extra 1GB really worth $14.50?

  • Flybuys card not needed and neither is immediate activation. I bought 3 using the same receipt and Flybuys card twice, once no card.

  • I usually spend more then $30 at coles does it have to be $30 or can it be anything over that?

  • Anybody unlocked one yet?

    • +2

I unlocked with dc unlocker for free but not with an official version

      • Got one. Didn't ask to see flybuys, or my docket. Filled out the SIM paperwork but don't intend to register it. I'll use it next time we're on holidays or have an ADSL outage.

  • how does the wifi bit work if there is no A/C? i thought it needs to be plugs onto mains for it to work? or can it be plugged into a USB port for it to work?

    • -1

yes you can plug into and a usb port or iphone charger

      • Nice thx mate I grabbed one… Any idea how to unlock it? The above post suggests dc unlocker free nit official?

  • Bought one of these at Coles tonight. Hadn't seen this post but so useful to be able to get input re whether its worthwhile, connection to pc required etc. Didn't know about the 500 flybuys points. I didn't give them my card and they didn't ask buy I may go back and get it redone for the 500 points. We're moving from Vodafone to Kogan mobile plans, so I suppose the only time we'll need this is if we go away somewhere that Telstra covers but Kogan doesn't. Or if we want to unlock it and use overseas. Probably will never use it, but for $10 seemed like good insurance.

  • unlocked it free finally using amaysim now. had to install dc unlocker twice. credit goes to bennyzhou see http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/104758 note it took a while to do as old drivers wouldn't load on win 8 so I had to use an old pc with win xp to install the software to unlock it . must follow steps carefully and they are hard to follow.

  • Could someone help me ?
What will be APN profile for Red Bull Mobile ?
If not, maybe Vodafone settings will work ?
I unlocked it with dccrap and dc unlock
,but not sure wich software /settings needed to use for Vodac ?

    • APN for Red Bull is purtona.wap

      • Thank you, after digging find about 15 ago.Worked fine.

  • Does anyone know if there's generic firmware for this device?

It's fairly simple to unlock, make the max wifi users 10 (instead of 5 after Telstra has modified it), allow messages etc. but it would be easier with a generic firmware
