Yeah, $99 one way from Perth to Bali but I'd prefer to not book almost a year in advance.
I'll pay $30-$40 extra to get a week or two in advance instead of one year ahead

I wonder if the airlines actually make money from these 'deals'.
People may sometimes book a year in advance and then something unavoidable happens and they have to cancel.
Surely those seats will then be sold to other customers at airport and most likely at very inflated 'last minute' prices
Not when you don't tell them you're cancelling. Like I did on my last flight ($59 flight with >$59 cancellation fee).

Pay for a bundle. The cheapest bundle (starter plus) allows you to change the flights without paying a change fee although you may have to pay fare differences.
Of course this is not as good as a full refund, but when I'm not able to fly, I just change the booking to the future and keep it in the "bank" for when I need to use it later.
Well worth the $19 bundle fee (shortest routes). Plus the ability to earn Qantas frequent flyer points and status credits with these bundles is a bonus.
Good deals if you live in Perth. Not so good if you live in Sydney for a return ticket to Aus destinations.

Sydney to Honolulu is $532.22 return.. that's pretty cheap I think??
Plus any check-in baggage/cc fees. But you can avoid those. Can then fly to NYC for about $720 return with United.. that's about $1,250 return to NYC with a free stopover in HNL if you wanted to. Not bad??MEL-BKK $403.09 return.
