Are you his teacher? If he needs it for next year it would be best to wait.

  • No a Parent, I wanted to get this expense out of the way.

  • What's your budget?

I would recommend an ultrabook that costs around $800 or so, generally a reasonable sweetspot between price and performance.

I really like Thinkpads for school because they're just rugged and well built. The Thinkpad T430 usually has 50% off or so, which brings it down to around $750, it's a great notebook for that price if you want something a little professional.

The X1 Carbon is also a great laptop if you have a bit of a big budget to spend.

    • a bit over the budget it think

Under $300 will be almost impossible.
There were some refurb machines on the recent click frenzy at $299, but they had limited performance. At this price point you will need to buy again in a couple of years to run up to date software, so bear that in mind.
Under $400 is probably possible with some compromises.
    Issues you should consider:
    - battery life is important in schools, and often a corner that is cut in cheap laptops.
    - kids are hard on gear, so spending lots might be problematic if it gets damaged.

If it were me I would be protesting the win8 rule, as something like a tablet/ipad/chromebook would be a better option for day to day use, but assuming you can't I would be looking at bottom of the range ultrabooks.
A more realistic budget is $500ish, and even then I would say you will be lucky.

Heavens, that is not going to work. My son goes to a school where the school provides the laptops, everyone has exactly the same, there is an IT person available to fix problems and it's totally integrated with the school curriculum and all the teachers use it. Expensive laptops though - think they were $1200 each.

What a silly school rule. They should specify a specific one and get a good price on it from a supplier. I would complain about that. Not good enough.

  • Try ozstock.com.au they occasionally have refurbished laptops. Worth a go.
    Cheers

  • If you really want one under $300, bestbuy.com have several (12) windows 8 laptops at that price. A few of them are refurbished and most of them have 15.6" screens.

  • I tried to get this: ASUS 1015E-DS01 10.1-Inch Laptop (Black)US$272.99 From Amazon http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-1015E-DS01-10-1-Inch-Laptop-Blackā€¦ seems that I get this message

We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order.

It happens with every large item from Amazon

  • The refurbished Acer E1-531 is $309 delivered.
Shame you didn't ask last week, their coupon code MYFATHER786 expired 31/08 ($295). Currently two in stock.

They have a 12 month mail in warranty. They cover postage both ways (I needed it but shhh, my fault).

  • Why a budget of $300 specifically?
