Agreed. They are never discounted and $18 would be a fair saving. I supplement my one year expiry by throwing in the recent freebies as in yatango/boost/amaysim etc but telstra never drops out as they do.

Wrong. Sometimes Coles express have 15% recharge voucher when you withdraw from their ATM.
The last time the offer came up I tried to do just that.
You can only purchase using the voucher at a Coles express petrol station, and the petrol stations do not have the $180 vouchers. (Yes I know they just print them out but apparently there is no option for a $180 voucher, at least according to the service assistant that was there when I tried).
They are totally wrong- the staff are poorly trained in certain aspects of the business that don't have barcodes or is not Fuel :)
it is under the heading wireless broadband or similar -as per an email i got back from Coles Express when i emailed them about this very issue.
So in order to save, you'll need to buy a $30+ recharge… and even then it's only $1.

Not really. $30 starter kits come with a free sim and $30 recharged.
Also, they are often sold for $10.
i too want to get a prepaid $180 voucher for the 365 day expiry mobile broadband.
do i just get the $2 sim with a prepaid then just redeem the prepaid voucher on my mobile broadband number?what can i do with the remaining $2 sim?
In short, yes:
- Go to customer service/counter(not the normal cashiers), state clearly you want that 10% recharge deal;
- Coles will ask for a photo ID of yours, and fill in a form for you(registering the SIM or something);
- Tell Coles which recharge you would like(any prepaid plan, including the $180 mobile broadband one);
- Make payment and Coles will give you a receipt with a voucher no., keep that receipt in a safe place and better off take a photo of that.
The voucher is valid for almost 2 years, mine runs from 22/1/14 to 10/12/15, you can recharge anytime within expiry and have full value of $180.
For those with ING direct u can still use it and get the usual 5% off from $99 and paid the rest using another credit card. It does not seem that Coles were able to let you split the payment on this occasion.
For the $2 sim do whatever you want, or see if they let you return just the SIM.
