What phone to get?

Hi all,

I've had an Xperia Z but the screen has started mucking up, so I've decided its probably time for an upgrade.

I really like the camera on the Nokia 1020 (for obvious reasons) and I'd really like to go to that… but I had a Lumia 920 back in the day and it was pretty average I found (the camera was gorgeous, the OS was below par (or so I thought anyway)).

Has the windows phone OS improved any since the 920? Should I get the 1020? Or should I wait for the Lumia 930?

And still… I wonder if I should just get a Galaxy S5 lol.

Sorry if this post is confusing, my heads still in bed this morning :(

  • Windows Phone 8.1 looks like a huge improvement over WP8 so it might be worth taking a look, it should be coming out next week.

And don't get the S5, Samsung's build quality is laughable.

Take a look at the Nexus 5; impressive specs and untouched Android 4.4 KitKat for an amazing price, but you'll find the camera isn't as good as your Sony or Nokia's.

    • Just to add my two cents.

Camera type phone - get the 1020 if you want it now, otherwise wait for the 930. Though I read somewhere that the 1020 raw file is not that great, still good, but not out of this world.

Nexus 5 specs is impressive indeed considering it went out last year and it's a bang for the buck. Camera needs working which hopefully gets and improvement with the Nexus 6.

I will get the Nokia 930 when it comes out because of the free wireless Qi and the similar CPU with the nexus 5. WP 8.1 will be fun. I wonder though why it's 0.1ghz slower considering it's the same chip.

LG G2 32GB seems to be the best price phone right now.

Unless you've dropped and damaged the Xperia, I'd be looking to return it under warranty.
It can't be older than 18 months at the most?
There's really not been much in the way of advances in Flagship phones in the past 18-24 months so any upgrade isn't going to be significantly better than your current handset.

    • Indeed! Plus the Xperia Z has 2 years warranty. Although it goes through FoneBiz who are absolutely horrendous (expect 1 week for them to "lodge" your phone into the system, 2 weeks to look at it, 2 days to repair it then overnight shipping.

      • Well… I dropped it a few months ago, and it still worked fine after this (very slight crack on the bottom right of the screen, still usable, not really that noticable).

Then, recently, out of nowhere, the screen started spazzing out :(

Turns out Optus does a trade in offer on phones, I might turn up with my Xperia and my HOX and see if I can put it towards something else. I'm getting married soon and I really want the 1020 for taking better photos with whats on me (as we're going to a pretty sweet spot for our honeymoon).

        • Yeah, any drop damage will void warranty.. the crack will enlarge over time as the phone flexes and heats/cools which probably explains why it has "suddenly" crapped out on you.
Personally I'd investigate the cost of screen replacement and compare it to the cost of replacing the phone.
If the difference is more than $100, do the repair and spend the difference on a ~$100 point and shoot which will crap all over the picture quality of any phone.

  • I got an iPhone last year, I think I have had to replace the charger, (electrical code) 5 times. They just stop charging. The phone battery doesn't even last that long, it dies whenever i turn on the camera.

I saw Gumtree introduced a phone valuation app that can help with knowing more a bout phones, http://www.gumtree.com.au/pages/pricechecker/

  • Get a LUMIA.
