PayPal appeals process

Hi just wanted some advice… I recently sold a jacket on ebay and the buyer opened an item not as described claim. In the beginning it ended up closed in my favour since they agreed that my listing accurately portrayed what the buyer received- I gave plenty of photos, including close-ups, of the actual item. But then the buyer opened an appeal?? And more recently it got closed in their favour, though after talking to someone on Paypal they put it back to the 'being reviewed by Paypal' stage… I don't want to provide a refund since I'm hit with Paypal fees and the buyer also requested express post with extra cover although she only paid for standard shipping so I'll be out of pocket by quite a bit.. What can I do?

  • Nothing much you can really do unfortunately. eBay and PayPal are skewed in the buyers favour. PayPal will always side with the buyer and you will lose the money you paid for shipping in the event they post the item back to you. You will not have to pay for the return shipping, however again, the process is skewed because it is very hard to prove/or disprove that the buyer not only sent you back the same item, but it is in the same condition. I do believe however you will be refunded the eBay and PayPal fees.

2 suggestions for the future. Firstly, you did the right thing with all the photos but I would ALWAYS point out any imperfections or faults making it very very clear. Secondly, try to avoid selling items over $100 on eBay. The risk of getting scammed increases dramatically otherwise just list it as local pickup/cash only.

If you receive the item back in the same condition and the buyer has forked out their own money at a loss to them, it is probable that your listing could have been clearer to avoid the issue. Then again, perhaps the jacket just doesn't fit them.
