The Story (speculation on my behalf)

One could assume that there is a story behind this as I have seen this on eBay in other countries recently and my assumption is that it’s an effort to drive top line sales and bring the stock price back up due to eBay's challenges in 2014:

Ebay’s stock price was recently at a 52 week low at US$48.06 and has been on a consistent decline since 2014. There are several factors that have influenced this (not in order of impact):

  1. The recent security issue/alerts;
  2. Departure of some key executives;
  3. The infighting with investor Carl Icahn;
  4. Alibaba IPO around the corner with Alibaba posing a real threat to Ebay;
  5. Amazon consistent strength and expansion (they’ll be here next year!);
(perhaps 4&5 should have Australian retail worried too!)
  6. Google Search algorithm changes resulting in lower rankings for ebay listings;
  7. Shut down of eBay Now - same day service;
  8. Some other undisclosed events (speculation).

Either way, I’m happy to support them this weekend and I’ll be buying up on Sunday !!!

The Instructions

  1. Proceed to Ebay Checkout Page: Checkout: Review order
  2. Enter coupon code in redemption code box (bottom right) and press apply
  3. Press Continue and pay with paypal
  4. Verify in the paypal screen/system that the discount was applied before you complete your order.

Hint: If you are buying multiple items then make sure the currencies of the items are the same because you will only get one shot at this coupon.

Please let us know what you are going to buy and share your bargains below please.

Start adding product(s) to your watchlists today and enjoy!

Will the professionals crash the site?

If you do the math then this is a potential $6 000 000 spend from eBay!

I expect full details to be clear around 9am when the ebay homepage usually updates.

    Here you go:

    • hm so the bit about having to be AU store

does that mean i can or cant buy from hong kong sellers? if i use the AU store using AUD as currency but buy from HK sellers is that still valid

      • +1

You need to be on eBay.com.au

As long as you're on eBay.com.au, you can purchase and its all good.

Looks like its a good time for me to get an Ergotron mount and a nice 1440p X-Star.

      • +41

Jv, how is that a reply to his comment? A lot of people are discussing that below, you just wanted your comment at the top.

      • Julio the clown, as usual

    • A man must have a code.

      • I have a code!

Ours is 02, or from abroad 612

  • +48

Woah. I'm calling it now (at +3), this will get 1000+ votes

    • +1

I am +47 21 minutes later. This will be big!

      • 2303 is mine

      • +74

Time to spend money that I don't have on stuff that I don't need to impress people whom I don't like.

        • -2

you just quoted tyler durden from fight club:P

      • I agree. The Good Guys with 30% off (twice this discount) only maxed at 656. 15% voucher that you can only use once is great - but not 1000+ vote mark, IMO.

        • +1

Difference is Good Guys marked up their prices before the discount

        • How do you know they wont inflate prices on ebay also, when coupon is valid

        • +5

Haha, you don't know how eBay works do you? eBay sellers aren't one business. The beauty of it is the enormous amount of supply, which keeps prices low because everyone needs to remain competitively priced.

If anything some sellers will lower their prices, because they will want to have the cheapest product when the craziness hits on Sunday.

        • +2

i dont think you get how ebay works…

        • How do you get 30% off on Goodguys store?

        • +1

          It was a while back.

But what most people are trying to say is that when TGG was having a 30% off sale via their ebay store, it was on RRP or sometimes even more.

With ebay most of the items are competitively priced so you're getting 15% off "good prices" which in most cases can be better than 30% off RRP

        • They didn't, at least not all items. I bought 3 products from that sale, and their price before discount was their regular store price, two of those are still selling at the exact same price, and one has even gone up in price.

    • 755 - Getting closer and closer…

      • I don't get the counting, can anyone explain

        Edit: never mind got it

    • And Devils Advocate wins!

    • It did! Huge thanks to everyone! Hopefully getting a few more tomorrow.

    • +1

His first guess was 500! Don't act like you can edit here without anyone seeing! I remember :P /shifty eyes

  • +1

    What's the code ?

    • "2. Enter coupon code in redemption code box (bottom right) and press apply"
I assume it's unique to each person, and will be displayed as it's stated above

      • +2

I'm not getting the banner in the carousel. Should I be?

        • neither, maybe its directed at people who don't make regular purchases or random?

        • it comes and goes http://imgur.com/skKdQ6H

ebay randomises / targets the banners to your buying behaviour, demographic or location

        • +1

Hmm… I wonder why I always get kinky sex toy banners?

    • +2

      Ken sent me.

  • +68

9/ Ebay being utter knobs to sellers and treating them like sewer rats, raping their butts with ever-increasing fees, thus driving them away.

    • +42

I'm surprised they managed to 'rape your butt' given your 'tightarse.'

      • +26

Its a collective figurative butt raping.
If you have sold on eBay, you have been anally mauled too. It runs at around 12.5% per sale these days.

        • +9

I most certainly have. There is the percentage in fees molestation, in addition to the random bannings etc. which is what happened to me and no one will actually give me an answer as to why they have banned me, other than a form letter. So, yeah. Not a surprise that their market share is going downwards (and thus their stock price) when any decent seller will try and leverage their sales to sell off eBay whenever they can.

        • I thought it was only 9.9% (which is still damn high)? http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/sell/fees.html

        • +7

          and paypal charges

        • +2

seller fees are now a percentage of cost to customer including postage.

        • +6

          Exactly.
This 12%+ goes directly on to the final price to the customer.
A seller may sell an item on Ebay for say $150 and after PP/eBay fees (around $20) and postage say $12 (pretty av)
which they now pay eBay a percentage on they will only have $118 in hand.

          $150
          - $ 20
          - $ 12

          $118

eBay's voracious fee greed has no doubt caused them sales losses.

        • +1

Its a collective figurative butt raping.

But what about the tightness of the arse? Is that figurative too?!?

        • +2

if it's a big/proper ebay store, then yeah - the cost will likely be worn by the customer.

if youre the average guy just selling your old bits and pieces on ebay here and there, then youre likely going to have to the wear the cost unfortunately

        • +2

Can a bunch of web gurus get together and design an open source alternative to eBay? Call it FreeBay or something and make it free for buyers and sellers, or at minimal cost. Enough is enough!

        • iOS only atm :(

    • +3

do u know taobao? its much better than ebay

      • +2

no one want to post to australia through.

        • +2

          aliexpress

          or alteratively

          1. be chinese
          2. have relatives
          3. ???
          4. profit
      • -1

A choice if you don't mind ending up buying some crap. There is little credibility with Taobo. Typical Chinese Sxxt, cheap in price and in quality.

        • +3

Same can be said for ebay since everything on ebay you can find it on taobao.

      • Most items are imitations, stay away from Chinese sites.

        • +1

what genuine luxuries are you buying on ebay?

    • +4

I was going to mention exactly this… this has caused them to loose so many sellers, I used to be able to find anything on ebay…. now, i'll only find popular items… in addition due to that they lost so many buyers…I sold a mag(wheel) on ebay the other day, started at 1 cent… got 1 bid for one cent and had to give it away for free! (stupid me should have put a reserve but anyways- I just wanted to get rid of it)

in short eBay got greedy and paid the price… services themselves right!

      • +7

The buyer didn't bother to offer you at least $20 or a six pack? What scum.

      • +4

Ebay Fees are now 10% on item cost + 10% on shipping. Paypal are around 2.5% I think now. Plus sellers have to pay increasingly exorbitant shipping costs for anything larger than letter mail size, which further reduces profits - the higher the shipping, the higher the overall cost.

Amazon in the US stills offers free shipping on a cart of $35 or more.

    • +2

Agreed - as a seller it's becoming harder and harder to make a decent profit.

      • Have so much stuff around the house ready for ebay, but I hate feeding those sharks, so it collects dust a bit more.

  • this works on anything ?? not just ebay-promoted deals.

also does it apply to winning auctions completed between the time period on sunday?

    • +1

that's a great question. My guess is that it will apply to ANYTHING purchased & paid for during that period. So as long as you won your item and paid for your item during that period you should be good. Obviously it's geared towards Buy Now listings.

You must purchase and make payment during the Offer Period

    • My question also.
I plan to buy an iPad Air as a birthday gift (due next month).
      with 15% off, it's a good price.

  • +1

So what are people going to buy?

      • +7

no they won't because the seller won't be losing out and not every seller will see the offer, so therefore their prices will be 15% higher than some of their competitors.

        • -2

last time ebay did 50% cashback a few years ago
everyone went and bought starcraft 2 as it just came out

I opted for pickup as it was close to me

When i arrived, i got super annoyed at the seller who was this sleazy internet cafe owner

Turns our he knew about the ebay thing and was selling grey import compies at australian RRP of about $85
then when i complained about him needing all my id and personal info SCANNED just to pickup he was like "im just trying to help people to claim the 50% cashback"

Help like how? by jacking up the price for profit at ebays expense?
the next day the price fell down to the $60 range

Not every seller will do this but expect a sudden surge in RRP prices on popular gadgets and gift cards which normally sell at a discount

    • +1

I'm considering the LG G3 but not sure if I should be waiting for the price to drop (because they seem to loose value very quickly these days).

Also a lot of action figures stocked up as Xmas gifts.

    • Gonna get myself a nice Korean 1440p and an Ergotron arm. Would've been around $600 normal pricing. Gonna be about $500 now. Now that great of a deal but a $100 is a $100.

  • +83

I swear I spent half the amount of money before discovering Ozbargain lol.

    • -1

      lulz, tell me about it.

  • Amazon consistent strength and expansion (they’ll be here next year!);

Where can I find this BIG news?

      • Sorry to be skeptical but a story from over 2 years ago and another about phones? That's hardly proof that Amazon are entering the market over here… Any more 'proof' other than a random online report?

And with higher wage/postage/production costs over here compared to the U.S. I can't see getting anywhere near the deals Amazon offers in the U.S. or the U.K.

    • +12

Don't get too excited about Amazon launching in Australia. The prices will be so-so compared to the UK and US stores and you may find it difficult to buy from those stores anymore. I wouldn't put it past them to try that much used tactic of overseas companies to stop parallel imports from their other stores.

      • +4

This is what I worry about.
While having a local presence may be good, if it stops us accessing real deals on the international websites - only to be forced to pay the Australia Tax - then it will be a massive step backwards.

      • Ala Costcoesque…

  • +3

Time to start looking for something to buy :)

  • can you stack this with the DS 20% off?

    • DS offer ends tonight (19th)

    • Don't think so as you can only use one code per order. Besides, the DSE 20% off ends today 19/6 way before this eBay 15% off is active on Sun. Double discount would have been nice though.

    • edit. what they said

  • +25

    Have fun!

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EFTPOS-Gift-Card-Fun-Image-200-00…

    Eftpos with $200 costing $204.95
    15% of 205 is 30.75 = $174.20

    $30.75 Profit!

    • That's probably what I'll buy. I just wish they had bigger cards.

    • +8

Actually only $25.79 profit as you're only getting $200 in return for your $174.21.

      • +4

Agree. But x3 to max out the discount!
        $204.95 x 3 x 0.85 = $522.62 paid to paypal
        $200 x 3 = $600 of EFTPOS money in giftcards

        $600 - $522.62 =
        $77.38 Total profit

        4 Cards [4 x $200 value @$204.95]
        $204.95 x 4 = $819.80 [UNDISCOUNTED]
        Discount = $100
        $819.80 - $100 = $719.80 [Paid to paypal]
        $200 x 4 = $800 of EFTPOS money in giftcards
        $800 - $719.80 =
        $80.20 Total profit

        4 Cards [3 x $200 value @$204.95 + 1 x $100 value @104.95]
        [$204.95 x 3 + $104.95 x 1] x 0.85 = $611.83 paid to paypal
        $200 x 3 + $100 x 1 = $700 of EFTPOS money in giftcards
        $700 - $611.83 =
        $88.17 Total profit

On a side note, even at its normal listing price, without the ebay promo on, with the high ebay's final sale fees, I wonder how the seller is making money O_O

P.s. are we able to cash out from eftpos? :D

        • +3

          $204.95 x 4 x 0.85 = $696.83 paid to paypal
          It' doesn't work like that
          Maximum discount is 100

        • +37

Was in the middle of fixing it :\

          Payoff Table
FaceValue of GCs (Cost) Combo 1 Combo 2 Combo 3

          Profit 77.38 80.20 80.20

          Better?

Note: Instead of an EFTPOS gift card, for the same price, you can buy visa prepaid cards.. if that makes it any easier for cashing out/realising the gains/profits >=D
          $100 Visa GiftCard here
          $200 Visa GiftCard here
Also don't forget to pay with your credit card for $700/$800 of free reward points!

        • pretty sure you can't do cash advances with either type

        • @didsburydan

          According to http://whrl.pl/RdZLXI
You are able to do it as a "deposit" to a transaction account, with the funding source: eftpos card.

        • just realise i can use my eftpos machine at work to cash out by "paying" for the cash. sorted

        • That's beautiful
Combo 1 would be the best in term of value for money I guess

        • +1
        • +2

Remember to hit "savings/cheque" so it'll only cost you $0.50 or whatever.
Hitting credit will charge a % as a fee.

        • Then I will use the newly purchased gift cards to buy Wish gift cards from Entertainment Book for a further 5% discount.

        • so just to make clear, we should buy visa prepaid cards if we want to cash out? There shouldn't be any fee for withdrawing?

        • +1

The amount is up to oneself, but as pointed by below posts might be more risky than a wire-transfer even. No insurance, no PIN-setup, faith alone.

In an event of dispute your bank considers Internet transfers authorised payments thus it "cannot debit the recipient of the payment without their authorisation"; cf. chargeback Credit Card you received nothing.

Any listing may be perfectly insulated under revised ebay-PayPal governing rule, making EFTPOS cards potentially a seller's dream 'item.'

        • +1

If the giftcard does not work though you lose your money as paypal won't refund gift cards, then what do you do?

        • +3

Maybe use some caution with gift card purchases through paypal. They are not covered by paypal's insurance. All currently available ebay offerings seem to be from one single seller. So when on Sunday 10:00am 60,000 people each buy $800 worth of gift cards from this outfit $48 million will end up as unsecured notes in the hand of this seller.

        • +2

mmm $48 million eh? Time for me to list some fake gift cards on ebay and start planning my retirement.

        • Can't buy these anymore. Does anyone have any more links to gift cards?
