    this is dirt cheap…

    • +4

MSY, thanks. No point paying 25% more for a warranty that you may need in perhaps 5% of cases or less. That's my philosophy. It's like being self insured for small items :)

    • +16

MSY are fine with warranty. They don't ask questions and usually replace the item on the spot.

      • +5

I think they are getting better with their warranty. It really depends on the store manager though.

        • According to the deal page they have "friendly staffs"… whether their staff are friendly they don't say.

        • +2

if they are better, its probably only because the ACCC fined them $200,000 and forced all their staff in australia to undergo training (the staff kept lying to customers about warranty).

          http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/04/accc-slams-msy-over-dod…

        • @Boshait:
they may be using the term in the original sense — "stæfs "walking sticks, strong poles used for carrying, rods used as weapons" — if they are 'friendly' perhaps their staffs are rubber-coated for ease of removal??

        • +1

          @Boshait:
          clayton msy is pretty good

      • +2

        you are so lucky

      • +1

Nope, currently having a problem with a motherboard bought through MSI. Four months later and still not fixed!

No one ever answers the phone, multiple conflicting statements as to what is happening, fabricated stories and excuses, and finally refusing to honour the agreement that we eventually worked out with the Store Manager…

    • +3

      Please share your experience, thanks.

    • +3

      I will chose both thanks!

    • no problems with their warranty. Got Dlink repeater last year and had problem. Brought back to the store. They said that I had to make a complaint to Dlink directly. After I got replied from Dlink, I brought the repeater to MSY with the printed reply from Dlink, and they gave me full refund, because it might take 4-6 weeks until the replacement repeater arrived (they don't have anymore left).

    • +3

MSY have changed things since being slapped with a big fine. They'll exchange and refund things now (as they should)

    • +1

Ive bought stuff from the auburn store before. Soup nazi comes to mind. They dont smile. No even if your asian, you have to know what you want. No asking complicated question and the line must keep moving.

    • +2

hit and miss with MSY. MSY is great for price, do your research and have alternatives for warranty.

e.g. buy samsung/gigabyte from MSY and completely bypass them for warranty if something happens and go straight to the manufacturer.

  • +17

    Cheap as chips!

  • can i order now or monday only?

  • +1

Save less than $10 on the 256gb variant buying from Amazon. Can pick up from MSY tomorrow with local warranty. Easy choice.

    • -1

Pick up from msy is time consuming. I attach a +$30 for my 30 mins time wasted compared to delivered for amazon.

  • Is this only for desktop computers? Will this be able to be used for laptops? (never bought an SSD drive before)

For reference this is for replacing a built in SSD.

    • +1

If your laptop has a standard SATA connector for its SSD, then these will work just fine.

If it has an mSATA port on the motherboard to which the existing SSD is connected, you will need an mSATA form-factor SSD, like this.

Some laptops have both an mSATA connector on the motherboard and a normal disk bay with a SATA port as well, in which case you should opt for an mSATA SSD, as that will give you the option of having two storage drives in the laptop.

    • +1

Also worth mentioning that while the existing laptop bay and SSDs are typically the same size, I've had issues fitting SSDs into the bay in the past. For my particular laptop, I had grooves in the corner of the bay which matched the existing HDD, but prevented the SSD from fitting. It could be worth checking this before buying.

    • +3

Should fit fine, it's a 7mm SSD so it's unlikely you'll have fitment issues.

  • Sweet I dont work on Mondays!

  • bought 2 around 2weeks ago. Same price. Working good.

    Crucial MX100 512GB SSD AU$242 delivered.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KFAGCUM/ref=ox_sc_act_ti…
    Good deal?

    • A nice price for the capacity. MX100 is not the highest performing device but still quite decent (once you get up to the 512gb)

MX100 hasn't been out that long, so not much info in terms of reliability on the model, but Crucial has a good history with their prior products.

  • +3

Looking for a small ssd, but the 32G was $25 a few months back. Hard to swallow a price increase.

    • +8

I feel like this comment belonged in the condom deal

  • +1

It says you can pre-order now but no real directions on how to do so. Leave in shopping cart until Monday? Or is it only for local people who can make it into the branch. Wondering if the almost $15 postage cost kills the deal? I live 3hrs away from my nearest MSY :( want a SSD to bring life to my 2010 macbook.

  • $30 32GB (Can be used as a regular SSD)

So is there something special I need to do to make it bootable for windows 7 os?

    • No, they just work like a regular ssd although they are very slow, I use one as the boot drive for openelec in my revo3610

    • +1

i read somewhere you have to clear partition and create NTFS. pretty easy. But wit windows, you're only looking at around 8gb of space. good if you dont plan on installing any programs. Otherwise go for the 64gb minimum. I'd recommended 128gb for a nice balance if you have other storage drives.

  • I will bite if there is a 512gb deal on offer…

  • +2

Before you guys order one of these, consider the reviews from Newegg (http://tinyurl.com/puadpfk)

Lot of ppl reported DOA units after a few months.

I originally pulled the plug on a 256GB for $125 but cancelled due to so many bad reviews.

Do yourself a favour, wait for a Samsung SSD special and spend an extra $20 for piece of mind.

    • -8

I'd MUCH rather SanDisk over Samsung…. any day of the week!

All SanDisk make is memory modules, thats all they've made for years.
I've a products of each manufacturer, and they are chalk and cheese in terms of build quality and reliability.
And I also bought a Sandisk ultra when they were on sale at MSY a few weeks back. Terrific product.

Samsung make everything… and nothing really good.
The only reason Samsung have become so big is because they undercut everybody else in the market and sell quantity over quality.

But for any Samsung product I've ever bought, I always regret it and wish I spent a few dollars extra.
The fact that you are saying "spend an extra $20" for them is even more surprising to me!

      • +2

you should get your facts straight before you even post. samsung is the largest manufacturer (at least before 2012) of memory chips and hynix comes next. I wouldnt be surprised if some sandisk ssds were using samsung memory chips. In the IT industry it is not uncommon for manufacturers to sell off lower quality cuts of memory chips to other vendors and use the better cuts for themselves. your statements seem logical but untrue.

edit: oh and samsung ssd cases use some sort of metal alloy. sandisk ones are made of plastic. so chalk and cheese indeed

        • -2

          a) never said they weren't the largest manufacturer. Quantity means jack, otherwise McDonalds is the best food ever.

          b) I would be VERY surprised if Sandisk used Samsung memory chips… and that's a huge jump in logic on your part.

          c) you love metal huh? you like the weight of it too? SSD's in notebooks or pcs dont need to be made of metal. Nothing wrong with plastic cases… unless of course its a Samsung phone, in which case plastic does suck. Metal cased SSD does NOT equal superior.

Telling me to get my facts right when you havent even read my post properly is embarrassing. I said nothing of "largest manufacturer". That means NOTHING when you are pumping out mediocre product. It's good enough to sell, but its never the best.

Dont be such a fanboi of Samsung so blindly. They are a cheap Chinese brand with poor quality control. The only reason they have such a big slice of the market is because of price point and cornering the market with aggressive promotion, nothing more.

        • +2

@UFO: the 840 evo is probably one of the best affordable SSDs around

        • +4

          @UFO:

They are a cheap Chinese brand

Korean. But don't let facts get in the way of your own dedicated bias.

          poor quality control

          [Citation needed]

I said nothing of "largest manufacturer". That means NOTHING when you are pumping out mediocre product

On the contrary, the size of the manufacturer is completely objective and your baseless opinion is not. The Samsung SSD's are highly regarded amongst most professional reviewers. Example:

Samsung does not cease to amaze me with their SSDs as the 850 Pro just kills it in every aspect. The performance is there. The endurance is the best of the class. Heck, even Samsung's feature and software suites beat the competition by a mile. To be honest, there is not a single thing missing in the 850 Pro because regardless of the angle you look at the drive from, it it will still top the charts.

I think I know who I'll be putting faith in.

price point and cornering the market with aggressive promotion

You do realise you're commenting on a post for a SanDisk product, right? So how would you suggest the anticompetitive Samsung is so successful if their opponents are able to price their products similarly? In reality, we call it competition, and it's better for the consumer. Well, those of us who don't treat companies like football teams, at least. Grow up.

unless of course its a Samsung phone, in which case plastic does suck

          Colour me shocked.

        • @UFO:

Firstly dont get me wrong. I have both a Sandisk SSD and Samsung Evo. Both are fine, except i prefer the Evo in terms of money well spent. Comparison for the Sandisk and Samsung EVO made the price per GB fairly similar, but in terms of Write/Read, EVO was superior. However Sandisk SSDs are now much cheaper than samsung EVOs. According to these benchmarks, the samsung EVOs win out over the sandisk Ultra Plus models at basically every test http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2013/07/25/samsung-…

Samsung make everything… and nothing really good. The only reason Samsung have become so big is because they undercut everybody else in the market and sell quantity over quality.

Diversifying products make good business sense. Where would Apple be if they until now have still been making personal computers?

Samsung have for a long time been:
-Leaders in LCD/LED TV/Monitor manufacturing, development, and innovation.
-in 2006-2010 formidable competitors in the hard drive market, speaking from computer sales experience.
-since 2013 leaders in the mobile phone/devices marketshare, and continued to be a major thorn in apple's side whom were dominating the mobile phone market since 2009 at the time.
          - continue to be a major force in memory chip manufacturing, supplying chips to major RAM/SSD companies
          - in 2013 released cameras that were of decent quality, and incorporated "smart" functionality to make taking good photos easier for the less photography savvy.

The only reason they have such a big slice of the market is because of price point and cornering the market with aggressive promotion, nothing more.

If you even bothered to do any research (which you should because youre on ozbargain) you would find that samsung charges a premium over its competitors, everything they sell is a little bit more expensive, yes even more expensive than sandisk. So that reasoning you just gave really has no basis whatsoever. To say that they have a big slice of the market because of their price you are either admitting that most people understand that samsung make good products worth paying a little more or most people are stupid.

edit: Also just one point to go against your "cheap quality" statement, I have a samsung 710N monitor that has been turned on and off every single day since i bought it in 2005. Its getting on 10 years old and its never had a dead pixel or any other fault. On the other hand my 24" ultrasharp developed dead pixels within 5 years. If anything the quality of this 710N is too good, and i cant justify replacing these monitors until one or both of them die. even the ultrasharp's power button has been broken because of the wear and tear, and still no problems from the samsung switches.

    • Thanks for ringing the bell. I checked Amazon's comments on Ultra model, it just little better than OCZ. Look like they don't care about quality, I will avoid Sandisk SSD.

    • Had a SanDisk Ultra Plus 256GB and never had an issue.
Of course I'd rather get an EVO atm if they were going for the same price and conditions due to slightly better performance.

    • Looking at the other SSDs on Newegg, the Evo 840 has even more bad reviews. Maybe (hopefully) it's just an outspoken minority?

  • I can recommend the ready cache for a cheap speed boost. I bought one in the previous MSY promo and the increase in performance is very noticeable. Eventually replaced it with a "proper" SSD.

    • +3

When u changed was there a big diff b.w the ready cache and the real ssd?

      • I got one for the convenience of a speed boost without having to do any of the work. Will be sticking it in the family computer. Ain't wasting no time with a cache drive on my own PC.

  • I was about to pre-order but the website says $139 instead of $124 for the 256Gb SSD. Anyone else have this problem?

    • Don't think there is a pre-order

      • At the top of the ad it says "Valid Mon 14/07 to Tue 15/07. Pre-Order Available Now".

        • i think it means pre order in store

  • This appears to be the "notebook" model. Will it fit in a 2.5" drive bay in my BRIX? Specs say in is 2.75" wide.

    • Yes it should, as it comes with a plastic adaptor bracket.

  • -6

It's much more worth it to buy from Amazon.

US$99 for 256GB, but it's better to invest on Samsung Evo 840 for US$130. Shipping around $7.

    • Its $109 from Amazon, so only a few dollars cheaper than MSY and but no local warranty

      • It was $104.5, if you think this SSD would ever need a warranty, then might as well don't buy one.

Also Samsung Evo is 25% faster and with $130 USD is a much better investment.

        • My point is if SSD or HDD need a warranty, then you have got to be kidding yourself.

If the drive is broken the first thing in your mind shouldn't be "how do I get my money back?", but should be "Damn…, How do I save my data?"

  • Howmuch is shipping to VIC from MSY ?

    • depends on if you live in the country or not. Otherwise just pick up from local stores

      • VIC Metro - reason I ask is I cant see the shipping cost without signing up. cbf.

  • In store only?

  • +4

Is this deal a hoax? Its Monday, prices are the same sas yesterday.

    • I'm not seeing the deal. Even when I go to the promotions via the homepage.

Found it. appears to be local pickup only? I went to delivery/online page and it wasn't marked down, but when I checked ultimo it was

      http://www.msy.com.au/nsw/ultimo/144-ssd

      • i clicked on ur link, it's discounted price now

  • Too bad its MSY…

  • +2

Crucial MX100 256GB USD 109.99 @ Amazon - shipped price AUD 128.12 or @ 5 dollars less with a 28 Degrees or Citibank card. Even though it is not local, I think it is better value than the Sandisk Ultra Plus - very positive reviews on Amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX100-adapter-Internal-CT256MX…

    • What about warranty though? If it's the same sort of price and most people can't tell the price difference isn't it just better off using this deal to get 2 years warranty?

      • I'm looking to purchase a 256gb ssd. Initially, I was going to buy a Sandisk Ultra Plus, but then saw reviews for it were not so good. After more research, I decided on the Crucial MX100 which is well priced with good reviews. It may come down in price locally - a couple of months back it was $129 at Shopping Exprees. Re purchasing from Amazon, as far as I know, Amazon warranty is good for the first year & then the Crucial company for 2 years beyond that - perhaps, another forum member may know more…

  • +1

    Picked up 256GB one.
Great for the money, the Crucial MX100 is a little more but no warranty and performance is not too different (that's why the MSRP is so low for the MX100).

Would rather pick it up now and get warranty.

  • +1

Do these use the same controller and chipset as the M500? I was there today, but went with an EVO instead even though it was $19 more expensive and has 8GB less.

The M500 BSODs with my Dell Haswell PC. I've done some searching on the topic, and there appears to be incompatibility between Dell and Crucial M500. If this SSD is a clone of M500, I would have had the same issues again, and MSY would not accept it back as faulty. So I took the safe option and got a Samsung for $87, though they also have Intel 520 120GB for $84 which would have been my next choice.

    • Sandisk is a older and faster drive than the m500.
It appears the m500 has some intel influence which could explain it's lacklustre performance.
