VIC Only - Energy Aust 27% off Electricity Usage Rates & 16% off Gas Usage Rates

84
Flexisavervic

I have been a long time customer of Energy Aust (previously known as Tru Energy) with electricity and gas accounts at various properties and did not pay too much attention to the discounts offered to each account; thinking that they were all the same.

The surprise came when I received a letter in the post at my parent's place offering a whopping 27% off electricity usage rates and 16% off gas usage rate. Didn't think too much of it and out of curiosity, went home to compare what I was being charged.

To cut a long story short - I called up Energy Aust and asked nicely if I could be put on the new special offer and the lady on the phone did it with so few hassles.

In short (and for VIC only):

3% discount + 24% discount on electricity usage rates (based on Flexi Saver option) if I paid my bill on time, fixed for 1 year with no exit fees.

3% discount + 13% discount on gas usage rates (based on Flexi Saver option) if I paid my bill on time, fixed for 1 year with no exit fees.

Just thought I would share it as it's "too good" an offer to refuse (based on my circumstances).

Call: 1800 048 802
Mention: "I have received a letter in the mail offering 27% and 16% off…And I was wondering if I can swap to these deals".

Happy days…

Edit: In OzBargain spirit, I have gone to a bit more trouble and now supply the rates and charges for the Flexisaver plan:

Electricity
Peak kWh = $0.2696
Supply = $1.03018/day

Gas
Peak Mj = $0.019013
Supply = $0.59354/day

    Just as FYI…

1 property only had a 3% off electricity and 11% off gas.

Another property had 11% off electricity and 13% off gas.

Seems silly and I guess that's what most energy retailers do - they play on your ignorance or "can't be bothered" attitude to offer you the least discount.

    • +2

Depends what the base rate is. I have momentum and have 0 discount but their base rates are much lower than the others.

  • This is usage rates only, not the entire bill.

    • +1

Correct. That makes a difference for small usage customers, where the fixed component can be a big proportion of the bill - sometimes over half. For large usage, the fixed component is not so material.

  • +1

You don't have to lie to say you received the letter in the mail if you really didn't. You can simply say you saw the offer at http://www.energyaustralia.com.au/flexisavervic

    • -3

WTF? See my mail attachment? Some peeps…

And yes, after I decided to go to the website to find out the rates and charges, I found that it is a current promotion also.

      • -1

To all those who negged me. Thanks for supporting a troll who has accused me of lying.

        Sick of this sh!t…

  • You still get more off when you go with Dodo Power and Electricity, 30% off electricity and 20% off gas when bundled together…

    https://connectto.dodo.com/electricitymvc/?SignUpType=r#

Now for anything else I would never go with Dodo, but the supply comes from the same place, it's just the re-seller that's taking your money so as long as you don't have any billing issues I can't really see it being an issue.

The Dodo plan also has no locked in contract. It's what I just signed up for at my new apartment yesterday.

    • Just did a rate comparison via Dodo on postcode 3030:

      Dodo
      Electricity rate (1st 11.2kWh) = $0.33539 with 30% off = $0.234773
      Electricity rate (thereafter) = $0.34804 with 30% off = $0.243628
      Supply charge = $0.9191/day

      And for Energy Aust
      Electricity Peak kWh = $0.2696 with 27% off = 0.196808
      Supply = $1.03018/day

      Net difference
Electricity rate (based on comparing 1st 11.2kWh and peak rate) = $0.0379/kWh
      Supply = $0.11108

Yes, on Dodo, the supply rate is around 11c cheaper daily, but the electricity rate is also higher.

As for gas, I can't seem to access the Dodo PDF.

Wow they have some really shitty rates. Meh

    • They look great to me.

But then again I live in SA. You should have a look at our real (profanity) shitty rates ha

      • -3

For Victoria is a ripoff. I can't speak for Adelaide. Do ur own research

        • Yeah mate I was just making a general comment about the difference in price between the 2 states.

Im well aware about doing my own research if I'm in the market for a provider.

was just on the phone the other day to the lumo muppet who wasn't lying…but was being very selective about the truth.
lumo 'salesman': "we can give you 26c/kwh exgst with a 22% discount and ONLY a 2 year contract" (for some reason he liked talking in rates excluding gst, so i went with it.)

Me: "Red energy are offering no contract, 21 c/kWh ex gst, with a 5% discount".

lumo 'salesman':"but we can give you 22% off."

Me: "but 22% off your higher rate comes out the same price as 5% off the cheaper rate, which has no contract. plus their service charge is cheaper than yours too."

lumo 'salesman':"but we can give you 22% off."

lumo 'salesman':"and we dont really have a contract, because if you find a better deal you can move for free"

Me: "then why have a contract at all?"

lumo 'salesman': something else that involved the words "22% off."… I dunno I hung up.

Deregulation of utilities is good for someone… just not the consumers that's for sure.

  • I changed from a no contract plan with Lumo to one with big discounts if I pay on time. Don't see much, if any difference in how much I pay per month.

  • HI OP, is the rate including GST or excluding GST?

  • +2

That rate is not really good. Simply Energy has 30% off usage rate on RACV offer, after discount rate for United Distributor network on Simply is only $0.19/kWh (19c) peak rate.

If you are a heavy user then this is the cheapest deal. If you are normal user, at this stage I haven't found a company that is cheaper than Powershop. They have no contract and give you $75. If you need a referral, let me know and we both can get $75.

Their concept is a bit confusing for you to understand at first, but once you are with them you will easily understand it. I have made a excel file to do a quick comparison, and I may make a detail topic to share with ozbargain about their way of pricing. I have also figured out a few tricks to at least lock in the cheapest rate in the first 4 months with them.

    • Hi! Help a fellow ozbarginer out - please share!

    • I'm going to switch too. Someone please send me a referral code.

    • Can you share the info please? I am with Lumo and do have Solar panels installed as well..
I am getting 15% ontime payment discount on my both Gas and Electricity.
but getting pretty good usage rates:
      Peak - 0.2686 Ex GST
Off Peak Ste 2 - 0.2494 Ex GST
      Service charge: 0.7395 EX GST

  • i did a search for cheaper rate 2 weeks ago. Here is what i get at switchon.vic.gov.au

The rate is varies between 12.25 - 23.49 ¢/kWh All consumption
    Supply charge 85.80 ¢/day
    It's from powershop Aus.

    • The idea with powershop is that they don't fix the rate, and there is a way for you to use the rate of the cheaper month for the more expensive month ;) and they often have sale i.e 27% - 30% off. I like this idea and ozbargainer should also like this as well :)

  • I give this a no go because I can get 30% off with Simply, you just need to change the plan to RACV plan (hint is they don't ask for your card first, you can borrow someone's card) or … you figured it out…

  • Received 30% off electricity usage and 20% off gas usage with Energy Australia. No direct debit required and no penalty for not paying on time.

    • +2

the size of the % discounts are only half the story.

check your rate AND the discount together.

A big discount on a big number can be the same (or worse) than a small discount on a small number.

      • Yes. I checked everything and compared with the other suppliers. This worked out to be the best offer for me in my area. And flexible payment terms is a massive bonus.

  • I notice they won't publish their solar FIT/TFIT rates you have to call up.

  • +3

Red energy is always cheaper than energy Australia.

Neg due the worst company on earth to deal with, impossible to get answers off customer service, do not follow through with discounts or answers.

    • Been a customer of EA for years - never had an issue

    • They sign you up to a contract and then another contract starts as soon as it finishes and then try to charge you exit fees when you have served your initial contract. Charge your cc without telling you.

      • I got a notice saying my contract was ending and "this is what we're going to do". I didn't like the offer and called them up, they made a better offer at that point. Not ideal but I can't complain about that

  • Do they offer 100% green power?

  • +1

Try momentum energy, myself & many others have found them the cheapest by far

    • I'll second that. Discounts are misleading and ways to suck ppl in and charge ppl higher rates. More ppl wouldn't even know what rate they are paying but they'll tell u " getting 25% discount so it must be a good deal" wrong!! Ur probably getting shafted like every other sucker. All discounts need to be taken into account with rates ur are paying. 26c per kW is expensive for Victorians. I pay something like 18c pKW and 70c a day with momentum. This is wayyyy cheaper than a 27% discount. Don't be fooled. Do ur research and get to know what ur really paying. And This deal should be NEGGED

    • Yes momentum energy was the best when I had a look except their latest new customer daily service charge prices are not the best for really small energy users.

  • Does anyone have experience with switch energy retailers when you have solar panels installed? Is it more complicated?

    • same principal. you just call and then find the rate for gas and/or electricity excluding GST for example.
Find out the discount that you can get.
Find out whehter is the discount apply to the service/supply or just usage only.
Find out the rebate that you get and ensure the same rebate, for example 60cents excluding gst

      THen you compare.

  • +2

The whole thing is too confusing. I have my electricity with Energy Australia and Gas with AGL. If i compare with other providers some have a higher per unit charge but lower supply charge etc etc. In the end i found that you only benefit if you are right now with the most expensive provider on the market and then move over to the cheapest provider on the market. Otherwise there is no appreciable difference. You would struggle to save a hundred dollars per year over your present bill. You would save a lot more money if you just buy specials in bulk from your supermarket……seriously!!! This so called deregulated market is a scam. I would rather that the government just supplies me with electricity at a low rate rather than all this song and dance illusion.

    • +3

      yep, that's pretty much it.
It looks like competition, but it isn't.

  • Not complicated but some of the retailers dont support solar panel tariffs, i recently dig enough to find the best prices, contact every supplier get all the rates, put it an excel, Simply energy with 30% discount(RACV membership required) was the cheapest, Next cheapest was Origin energy 27% discount, Next was Energy australia with 27% discount, the differences in rates was negligible and i was already with energy australia, so I just stick with them applied the new discount rates. I have a solar panel(peak/off peak meter), so the rates are little bit different than the people those dont have solar panels. People with solar panels I guess can take my suggestions as reference.

    • Wonderful, thanks for the info. I'm with EA right now and will give them a call about getting this lower rate. Cheers!

    • I found it's the supply charge & the feedin tarrif which are what you look for with Solar Panel.
Red Energy was easily the best when i check again 6mths ago. TFIT (Feedin Tarrif) is 33c well above the standard 25c. With one of the cheapest connection rate (under $1/day), it was a no brainer.

      • feedin is only 8cents for solar. the trick is when you have a solar electricity companies put you in a higher peak/off peak rate. i found out to be not much use to have a solar panel is you are not using all what you generate or dont have some most of the year, by having a solar panel you are simply paying high electricity rates.

        • The feedin depends on when you installed it…
          For VIc…
Premium get min of 60c/kwh (installed 2009-2012) (capped until 2024)
TFIT (2012 installs) get min of 25c/kwh (capped until 2017)
Everyone since gets a min of 8c/kwh now, next year that drops to 6.3c/kwh
          http://www.energyandresources.vic.gov.au/energy/environment-…

For Premium & TFIT customers, Red Energy add an extra 8c/kwh, which makes a big difference if you're feeding power back in.

I agree for new installs, you shouldn't bother or only install a low wattage one if you're home during the day with the aircond on

        • @supabrudda: I'm on the 60c/kwh. I'll check out Red Energy. Cheers mate!

These days the % discount is meaningless without looking into other details eg. usage rate. All marketing tactics. Just like $ call credits on a mobile phone plan.

  • I am currently with Energy Australia.

I will be switching away from them.

I find them more expensive than the others and .

And I dont like it that they are lobbying to scuttle renewable energy
initiatives (as are the other big players).

    http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/en/mediacentre/media-rel…

And if you google TruEnergy (their old name), you will find very unflattering reviews.

    Wouldnt recommend them.

  • They never tend to reveal the service charge per day which is around 70c - $1.20 for various retailers. It does make a difference in the bill. I would definitely say anything above 80c is not worth it.

  • the rates you quote in your post DONT INCLUDE GST

    Electricity ratesGreen Energy ratesOther information
Electricity rates Excl. GST Incl. GST
    First 10.959 kWh of Peak usage per day 26.96 c/kWh 29.656 c/kWh
    Balance of Peak daily usage > 10.959 kWh 27.46 c/kWh 30.206 c/kWh
Electricity Supply Charge per day $1.03018 $1.133198

So your looking at $1.14 usage charge per day and $0.216c/kWh

Im with red energy and pay a slighter higher kWh charge, but lower daily charge Much of a muchness for me

    • Hi Chaser77,
I had switched account from EA to RE yesterday as referred by you.
I need your name & customer number so we can claim award $50 Myer voucher each(Customer-satisfaction)
Please call Dennis 0433157487 or email [email protected]….Thx.

  • Guess I have opened up myself to a firing line.

    The consensus is:

    1. Energy Aust is a "No deal"
    2. Lumo is a "Maybe"
    3. Momentum Energy is a "Winner"
    4. Red Energy is a "Winner"

I will go an do some research now.

  • The website says this is for new customers, not existing.

Has anyone who is an existing customer had any luck getting those rates?

The website is confusing. It says the discount is off usage. At the moment, I get a 10% discount off the total of the usage and supply charge before GST. eg, Usage 121.59 + Supply 92.64 = 214.23 less 21.42 discount plus GST.

The charges on the website for this advertised plan are different to what I currently pay, usage slightly cheaper, supply slightly dearer, but with a bigger discount, I may save a few bucks.

I need to find something cheaper but trying to work this shit out just does my head in - and yes I know that's what these thieving mongrels want to do to stop you changing.

I didn't even attempt the Gas charges!

Someone mentioned about putting together a spreadsheet??

I looked at the momentum website, but you have to give your meter number and contact details for someone to phone you back. ARe they really cheaper to make this hassle worth it?

      Hi John,
Call Dennis 0433157487 for better offer…

Anyone with Red Energy please give me a Call Dennis 0433157487
    Thank you…

  • Just got my renewal notice from Energy Australia as my current contract ends in a couple of months.

They are only offering me the same 7% off and a 1 year contract.

    Unbelievable!

  • Energy Australia is terrible
