What Type of Surveillance Cameras Should I Buy?

After recent break in's in my area I have decided to purchase camera's to set up around my home.
I have read that there is no point investing in a camera that you cannot make out any people on as it will just be a visual deterrent and won't actually help.
I know nothing of camera qualities so I was hoping someone could point me in there right direction to what I should be looking for.
Camera's will be outdoors.

Thanks in advance.

Would this be okay?

      • And just out of curiosity, which neighbourhoods are these? Might be the same ones? :S

        • Werribee, my car got broke into last night. They took everything! Including my car air freshener from my rear vision mirror which I thought was extremely odd.
Police came by and told me there was a lot of break in's in my area overnight that they are attending to, most likely some kids they also tried to start my car. Lock is all distorted and they had at my fuses :/

Thanks heaps for finding the link for me.

@1271190: What kind of scumbag steals an air freshener? Sorry to hear you got broken into. Hopefully the camera will deter future criminals.

        • @17731773:
Just low lifes most likely doing it for kicks, unbelievable really… even the Police were surprised by some of the stuff they took as none had any resale value or even use anymore. Like my petrol/maccas receipts, used pens, air freshener and pocket tissues, they just cleaned out the whole car only thing they left me was a hair brush.

This being the first time being a victim of any crime it's not a good feeling at all.

@1271190: it's a terrible feeling. As a kid our house was robbed and cleaned out. They even took a lot of our clothes. I've had my car broken into also, they just took the GPS.
Must've been a bald thief that had no use for your brush, may karma get them in their next life.

if you want something basic and works well have a look at the D-link 2332L, it wireless and has email notification if a motion is detected, outdoor capability and HD image quality, works pretty well for my needs

    • Thanks will suss it out, appreciate your input.

  • I noticed Kogan seems to have a high quality 720p set that can stream to your phone. Its very cheap and includes a 1TB hard drive. Also POE means less wires.

    • Can anyone vouch for these ones? Very exceptional price compared to others I have been looking at.

Good price but I find wireless ie just connect to nearby power point easier to manage than with those long wires connections, especially if you want to install a few camera around the house.

Wireless is crazy, you will just create and suffer from interference, they will not work when your microwave or neighbours microwave is on also. The fact that these are POE means that you only have one wire to each camera, so you don't need to find a power outlet outside of your building, near the front door, for example.

the idea of POE is brilliant, but unfortunately most switches\routers don't support it — the supplied NVR includes support for it luckily. Includes 4 cables (2 of 50ft and 2 of 80ft), and supports network cable length up to 165ft.

Cameras are a deterrent, so surely any would do. It displaces crime really though.

Plus they just wear hoodies and masks if they see a camera but can still get in.

    Hide valuables from plain sight.

Yeah his mistake was keeping that $1 air freshener out in the open like that.

      • +6

I have learnt my lesson never will I try to flaunt my "Little Tree" air freshener again! Lol

      • You pay $1 for those? Amatuer. ;-p

Never bought them so wouldn't know.

Wasn't really giving OP advice but everyone. GPS, phones etc.

        Comprehension skillz bro?

        they took everything

        … except

        hairbrush.

I'd say the DNA on the hairbrush is worth more than the stupid scented cardboard.

It seems like it's the latest crime fad of teens, 'Clean out* a car for kicks!' *except personal grooming items.

Very lengthy WP thread here on setting up HD security cameras http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2352121

The Hikvision cameras from alixpress seem to be the most recommended.
