Low Cost Internet

I'm looking for an internet for around 6 months for Spring Hill Brisbane. I don't need to make phone calls, thus don't require a landline unless unavoidable. Has anyone come across any great deals out there for short term broadband? Some have an exceedingly high set up cost for 6 months. TIA

If it's for a short period, would a 4G modem suffice for the amount of data you use?

  • Or look up vividwireless

  • Whats your expected data usage? As mentioned.. mobile might suffice?

  • ^^^Expected data usage maybe around 15gb per month I'd say

    • Go with a Virgin or Vodafone Prepaid Mobile connection..

enter a nearby phone number and see which providers are available in your area. You can select the details like contract term etc and see if any are cheap enough for you given your usage, then you can compare to the costs of the prepaid mobile deals others have suggested.

But if you don't have a landline connected already, the biggest cost will be this and likely to cost you more than any mobile connection, unless you are a very big data user.

    • Is there anyway to avoid paying for connection of the landline phone?

      • As a Telstra shareholder I hope not.

Seriously I don't think there is.

        • Sigh…

(that shareholder part just got me mad. cause we (taxpayers) already paid for telstra's infrastructure back in the day, but still paid more for monthly use. Then it got sold off, didn't get proceeds, but continue to pay for its use. Now paid for NBN, don't have access, and continue to pay every month for 1970's equipment in 2015)

I am glad you are benefiting though. I guess we all should have bought shares (that we theoretically already owned)

        • @Son ofa Zombie: I wouldn't be too jealous of Telstra shareholders seeing as T1 and T2 share purchasers have only seen the capital value of their shares increase above what they paid for the first time since the public offering…

        • Then it got sold off, didn't get proceeds,

          @Son ofa Zombie:

The government (and subsequently all Australians) did get the proceeds of sale…
Although I agree should never have sold the physical assets.

@Son ofa Zombie:You make some petty wild assumptions here.

          1. That the shares were given away etc. They were paid for, so someone got the benefit of the purchase price, like those who got a Global Finance meltdown bonus, or those who got tax reductions or Subsidised Pink Batts….

          2. The only real beneficiaries of the original Telstra was the staff who didn't have to be as efficient. Now before you go off on your high horse I got my shares as part of a staff purchase before being laid off.

          3. The Telstra shares that the government (or as you think the average Australian) doesn't mean great returns. Remember Telstra shares were sold down to as low as $2.40, until they got the benefit of Vodafone's disastrous network bungle.

          4. Telstra lost it's monopoly position with the introduction of Optus by Keating/Hawke in 1990 so the financial rot was put in place when it no longer was the only supplier of telecommunications services, with mobile phones now being the bulk of revenue generation in the telecoms arena

          5. Australia Post - our national mail asset is now losing money - guess who pays for that asset? You me and ever other Aussie. And selling it when it's losing money isn't that great a time to get benefits from that.

Are Belong still doing free setup?

    • yes, it is on their homepage .

I noticed they were giving away a $100 myer card previously. Knowing that I feel like I'm getting cheated not getting the card.

  • I ended up signing up to Belong, waiting for setup, as it seems to be pretty minimal upfront costs. But yeah didn't get a Myer card nor a free chrome cast. Timing hey
