Infringement Notice States Incorrect Rego Number

My friend recently got an infringement notice on her car but the rego details on the notice has one digit wrong.
What will happen if she does not pay it.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that the notice was placed on the car and not posted out. The car was parked for longer than indicated. I believe that the notice was correctly issued but the error is just a typo.

Then send them a letter (or call if that's an option) stating that the infringement notice is wrong, and they need to send it to the correct owner.

Just ignoring it may cost more.

My son got one, for a car that was unregistered 6 years ago, it sits in the backyard. Turns out it was the same plate but for another state. Ignoring it would have just meant going to court which would have resulted in it being thrown out, but time wasted. They cancelled it when he called them

    Was she actually parked illegally?
You should speak to them as they probably have photos of the car and if she doesn't pay they'll check the photos and see they got the number wrong and reissue it.

  • This would be for parking I assume. There would be no harm in waiting for the reminder as the reminder would never reach you if they have the number wrong in the system as well.
And when the notice goes to the actual car owner they will not pay as they were never there. If you call in they would correct the notice if it was placed on your car and you would have to pay it. This would unfortunately cause some grief to the other car owner for no fault of their own so would recommend paying if it was parked over the time limit and not by a couple of minutes.

  • Thank you for the replies. I believe she was parked longer than she should have been. The notice is most probably intended for her but the council worker has done a typing mistake when keying in the rego. The description of the car is correct.

Juicepixels - You are right. They do take photos. I believe that they use them if there is a dispute.

yeah just write back saying "sorry that's not my rego, must have the wrong car"

  • I wouldn't try to ignore it coz most of the time they'll take a snapshot photo of your car in that spot including your rego. So even if typo mistake they'll still hunt you down and probably more penalty than the initial infringement issued.

Follow up. Friend has contact the council concerned. They advised that she complete the appeal form. They will not add penalties. A review will take place and they will send her a response.

    • How exactly do you appeal against an infringement against someone else's car?

      ;)

You should have ignored it. If the fine wasn't paid, they would send the fine reminder to the address of the incorrect registration plate that they punched in. Whoever receives it would then dispute that it wasn't them & there's a high chance they would retract the penalty & wouldn't bother pursuing further.

  • This has happened to some friends of mine and me when we parked in a "traffic zone (entire zone has parking restrictions even if specific signs aren't in place in parking areas)" in Brisbane when we went to watch an A-League match. The infringement notice had the incorrect registration (off my one digit). My friends called up council and they said to ignore it as it wasn't their (my friends') registration so they didn't have to pay.

  • I'm in the same boat. But mind was posted out to me with my name and address correctly but instead I wasn't the person driving the vehicle at a specific time and the rego is incorrect too?

    • First question is, who issued it? Not the cops or council (i.e. carepark), then ignore it.

    • But mind was posted out to me with my name and address

      the rego is incorrect too

the issuing officer got your details from your rego. you've to either pay the penalty notice, ask for a review or nominate the driver.
