Just How Nerfed Is a PS4 When No Internet Connection Is Available

I am thinking of buying a PS4 to pass the time on my breaks from work. I live in a remote WA town where I have no access to internet at home (other than 3G on my phone occasionally, weather permitting). I've been told that a PS4 may not even allow me to play any games without an always on internet connection? Is this true? would I be buying a very expensive brick if I can't connect it to the internet?

  • The Xbox one was the console with this crap till it pissed so many people off they removed it all before launch.

The ps4 never had any of this crap.

  • I had no internet connection for a few weeks when I first got my ps4, all the games worked absolutely fine.
The only thing I had an issue with was watching blurays, it wouldn't work because you have to activate the "disc playback feature" over the internet first.

  • I've got internet that basically doesn't work and have an x1 and ps4, the x1 is pretty terrible without a solid network most stuff besides games won't even work without being connected. The ps4 is better though annoyingly trophies can't be accessed without a network connection, I think that's the only problem with it that I know of

  • Not nerfed at all.

You can't play multiplayer games, but you can play singleplayer games to pass the time.

  • Cheers all. I only asked because EB games told me that a few of the games that come in their bundles won't work without a net connection. I'm in regional WA and only have net access in my office at work. I'm going to go get one on Wednesday now. Thanks again :)

    • EB may be referring to games bundled with a console that come as digital downloads (tokens included in the box), eg The Last of Us. You could always ask your friendly IT guy at work if you could connect your PS4 to the net temporarily to download those games and get some updates. Just a thought :)

      • +1

Hmmm. EB told me that all the games in their PS4 bundles come on discs and there are no downloads. I guess i'll find out on Wednesday ;)

I'm pretty sure our IT guy is in Perth ;) What he doesn't know won't hurt him.

      • The digital copies will only work if you have an internet connection.

If you have the game downloaded but are not connected to the internet it will come up as being unverified and you cannot play it.

        • I just tested that with my digital copy of The Last of Us, I turned off my internet connection and it worked just fine.

EDIT: Oddmog, was that game you got that message on part of your PS+ subsciption?

        • I had some dramas with shadows of mordor which I bought as a digital copy.

They might of relaxed the rules now but it used to be if you didn't validate every 24 hours you would be locked out of digital content.

  • Only issue i can see is existing games with updates … you'd obviously pass on that. Dont' see why a disc physical game shoudln't work though?

All this talk.. i should whip out my ps4.. haven't played for a good few months - sitting and collecting dust.. wish I was still a student on those endless time days you could sit from morning to night playing FF7 :(

  • Far Cry 4 has annoying an annoying net login based step while turning on.. Even when just playing single player. I've never tested what it'd do without a net connection.

    • That's just Ubisoft servers, it's so you can collect their points to unlock in game rewards. It's the same with all Ubisift games and they work fine with no net connection.

  • Keep in mind some parts of games simply to do not operate without an internet connection. (no not just multiplayer games).

For example, the NBA games (both Live Ultimate Team and some of 2K's online stuff) will not let you play (even VS the CPU) without being able to connect to their online servers.

You really miss a lot without being able to connect for patches especially. Driveclub for example is a different game than what is on the disk.
