Just sharing as I've been waiting a while to get this and it is the lowest advertised price I've ever seen for it.

  • dual boiler with PID. i'd love one of these

I'd recommend the BES920 with smart grinder for ~$1100 over this

    • Where can you get it for $1100?

      • JB HIFI had them for $1189 a while back. I'd imagine you'd be able to get a similar price somewhere with a bit of effort.

        • +7

Integrated grinders are just asking for trouble IMHO.

        • Ok thanks.

        • @ash2000: But you're not forced to use the grinder on this right? You can always use an external grinder if you want more control or the built-in grinder fails. I think that's the advantage of this machine. You can get it to make your coffee when you feel lazy, but do it yourself when you feel more adventurous.

@raziel:for the price difference between this and the non-grinder edition, you could buy a mazzer mini off the bat.

        • @raziel:

But you're not forced to use the grinder on this right?

Indeed, but if the grinder were to fail over the life time of the machine, it simply wouldn't be economical to have it repaired, and you'd be left with a "half broken" machine. If you had an external grinder, simply replace the grinder.

        • since when did JB do coffee machines? The BES920 is the model I'm hanging out for next. my sunbeam em6910 is getting on a bit and not making pressure like it used to.

Thanks, I had no idea (obviously). ACT must have only recently got one when jb at DFO moved within the centre.

I'd recommend a Rancilio Silvia with PID installed partnered with a Smart Grinder. A lot cheaper.

    • +1

Or just get the Dual Boiler with Smart Grinder for about the same price as a Silvia with PID and Smart Grinder. At least you'll be able to steam milk at the same time and have preinfusion too. The Silvia will probably last longer but you'll have upgratitis by then.

    • +1

can't compare. silvia is a single boiler and you will have to wait for temperatures to get up to speed between extraction and frothing your milk. The breville is a DB and allows both simulteneously, workflow wise this is a much better option.

      • +3

It's funny, because you ask the serious coffee geeks and they'll tell you the Silvia is overpriced and obsolete these days. No doubt they're mentioned alot due to being bfyb… 10 years ago (like the rocky).

Also, smart grinder lol. The grinder is far more important. Cheap espresso unit + exxy grinder>>the reverse.

As someone suggested above, the 920 dual boiler, and a mazzer or vario grinder would be your best bet if you're willing to spend 2k. Obviously there's counter space concerns etc.

        • i skipped miss silvia altogether. went from nescafe43 -> jura superauto -> sunbeam em6910 -> quickmill anita -> rocket r58.

have a vario for filter/coldbrew and a kony-e/k3t for espresso.

but then again this is a discussion for coffeesnobs.

lotsa ppl talk up the silvia but i much rather save the $$ on a cheap SB sunbeam and spend the rest on a decent grinder (k3t/m4d) and the result in cup will still infinitely be better than silvia + elcheapo sunbeam grinder offering.

        • @avexdevil:

I assume you've tried the Breville Smart Grinder with shims or Smart Grinder Pro then?

I've got a K3T doserless and a Smart Grinder. The K3T is my espresso grinder and the Smart Grinder is for filter and cold brew. If I could only have one grinder then i would go with the Smart Grinder and pocket the difference. The versatility and size is perfect for home use. It loses by a little in the cup and can't run all day like the K3T but it's the BFYB champ.

        • @microsnot:

Why do you need shims? Surely they would only be needed if your grinder is faulty, but your comment makes it sound as if the smart grinder would somehow be better with shims?

        • +1

          @microsnot:

Yes, For that reason i actually have a 2nd hand rocky. Because I filter/french press alot and in my current budget it's fine.
However, the reasoning is that the poster was willing to spend 2k …and that combo for the budget is silly.

I found the Smart grinder 820 barely better than my hand Porlex grinder btw.

          edit:
It needs shims because the original model actually didnt grind fine enough for espresso. The updated version basically has the shims inbuilt.

        • @robbyjones:

the brev smart grinder is notorious for not grinding turkish/third wave roasts fine enough for espresso. the shims rectify that problem.

        • Agree with the comments about Silvia/SG/PID combo. However, I am not making assumptions about the OPs time constraints or coffee snobbery, merely highlighting the fact that there are other options that are much cheaper and this is a bargain website. They're pretty well known, accessible and affordable.

        • @robbyjones: The first generation of Smart Grinders (BCG800) sometimes required shims to get a finer grind, presumably due to being on the wider end of the tolerances at the factory. The current model (BCG820) has been redesigned so that you can achieve the same adjustments without shims

So in only 35 years, you will pay for this thing vs buying coffee at a cafe

    • +5

huh? average price for a large coffee is $4 in Melbourne. you buy a coffee everyday for a year = $1460.

  • Excellent, I just bought one from DJ. None left in that store except for the display model. Paid $1699.32 for it by getting extra 15% discount from signing up for the DJ Amex card. Going to cancel the card after I get the free credits to pay off the annual fee.

    • That beats the record low price I paid for this model one year ago - $1874 (including $40 Myer one points).

The one thing this machine does that a separate grinder doesn't (as far as I know - maybe I'm wrong) is auto tamp the coffee after it grinds it. The only thing you have to do is move the handle from the grinder bit to the coffee bit. Does make a pretty darn good cuppa in the hands of an amateur.

One of the flaws is it uses heaps of beans - there is no single basket/double basket like there are on a lot of machines. So it always uses a big basket full of coffee.

So next thing you'll want to buy to go with it is one of these (or something like it - some people use bread makers and hot air guns) - Behmor 1600 Plus coffee roaster $495. Also heaps of green coffee beans which are much cheaper than roasted ones.

If you live in Brisbane, the Breville factory outlet is in Tingalpa - We bought a similar model to this 5 years ago, for $400 (RRP was $899 at the time) only a single boiler, but has the grinder in it as well as the steamer and coffee extractor thing. Used daily without any problems at all, and still going.. but starting to slow. The factory Outlet has all the current models pretty much at half the RRP, fairly certain this one was around the $1200 mark…. worth a phone call to them to see what they have in stock at the time if you are in the market for a breville and are planning on going to venture to see them.
