Bauhn 55" 4K Ultra HD LED Smart TV $799 @ Aldi 25/3

470

Just seen this on the Bauhn website. Good price but need more specs to decide if it's a good deal. For example does this TV offer HDMI 2.0 and what's the screen refresh rate??

On sale Wednesday the 25th of March at all ALDI stores for $799

      probably not this much.

  • The link shows the price of $799 - http://www.bauhn.com.au/product-listing/55inch-4k-ultra-hd-l…

but yeh, a bit light on specs but I'm sure they'll go quickly…

    • -4

      but I'm sure they'll go quickly…

A friend got an Aldi TV last year and it went after a month… Not good build quality, but I guess you get what you pay for.

      • +18

        where did it go?

      • -3

Aldi has a model of approaching suppliers and asking them if they can replace any part of a item with cheaper build to lower price.

Unfortunatelyfor tTV's, this process is well established, so aldi hasn't got an advantage in TV making and selling compared to TGG or JB, they simply make a inferior product, to sell cheaper.

So I'm not surprised if it breaks within a few months tbh

      • +2

He does have 60 days to bring the TV back, no questions asked. That is part of their refund policy.

        • -7

Sure, but why bother. These Aldi tv's have a bad history. When they fail under warranty (after the 60 days) they can take such a long time to repair, because the parts aren't common in Australia. See the threads in Whirlpool.

Think about it. You can barely see the difference between a good 1080p and a UHD 65 inch tv at normal viewing distances. This means these cheap UHD tvs are going to look worse than a good 1080p model.

Don't go to the dark side. Resist the false bargain.

        • @not a bargain: you're talking about the medion 32" TV. Here is the thread about it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/135206

        • -2

          @altomic:

No, I am talking about the 40 inch and other models as well that have had problems.

Ignore my advice. I don't care, what would I know anyway (studied microprocessor design etc, worked in computer industry for over 25 years…)

        • +5

          @not a bargain:
I have watched hundreds of hours of tv so i can tell just by looking that this is a quality TV, nothing to worry about guys, all good.

"I don't care, what would I know anyway (studied microprocessor design etc, worked in computer industry for over 25 years…)"

…yea you don't care at all

        • @not a bargain: I'm not negging you.. Warranty period is a year.

      • +7

The 32" Bauhn I bought 6 years ago is still going strong.

        • +5

been using Aldi 42" and 47" tv for the past 3 years - no issues on them at all, $499 and $599 back then

        • Yeah, we just replaced our 6 year old 32" Bauhn LCD - absolutely nothing wrong with it, just time for a bigger, smarter™ TV.

        • -2

          @Ninjabredman:

A sample of two. Just because you didn't have troubles doesn't mean the failure/fault rate is higher than others in the market.

        • +3

@not a bargain: what is the failure rate? You claim they should be avoided yet and dismiss anecdotal evidence. My medion aldi TV used chimei a powerboard with Samsung panel and driver boards. Last I heard Samsung was a reasonable brand

        • The 32" Bauhn I bought 5 years ago is still going strong :-)

        • used 39" Medion since 2013 and no problems at all.
Happy to buy again for bedroom

  • +1

Great price i'll get it next week !

    HDMI 1.4

    • +1

I couldn't find any information in the manual on what type of HDMI it is or any special instructions for UHD at all.

The term "smart hub" does seem to indicate it COULD be a samsung rebrand though.

  • +7

I like how it comes with Freeview Plus. Haven't seen many of the other tv's with it yet.

    • Sony, Panasonic & LG all have Freeview Plus in their high-ish end Smart TVs. It's pretty much only Samsung that doesn't now…

  • +11

I can't wait to watch all my 4K content on this baby….. oh wait. I have no 4K content. Hmmmmmm

    • +1

The ones I've seen upscale very well, don't know if this one does though…

      • +4

        upscaling is overrated.

      • I'd be interested to see which brands/models you liked jv. I haven't seen any that scale well enough for my tastes so far. I'm sure it will come, I'm just a bit picky with judder and jaggies.

  • +2

The remote looks nice as well with the qwerty keyboard on the back for the smarthub

  • +9

    Kogan will be pissed :)

    • Literally? ;)

  • Lol as if this would have HDMI 2.0

  • +8

The set looks almost identical to the cheapish Soniq 4K TVs at JB, down to the remote control - the only difference is the stand.

If it's anything like them, it will only have HDMI 1.4, and won't have the HEVC decoder built in, so will only be able to play 4K through a device that supports it, at 30fps.

While this is very cheap considering competitors' RRPs, it's really not worth it, when a FullHD TV would probably be more beneficial, due to the lack of requirement for upscaling, and you could get something with relatively decent Smart TV software for around the same price.

    • +2

I am glad someone else understands the problems with these cheap UHD units.

Their play back of UHD will be crap (or no better than what a FHD set would do).

  • hmm, wonder if this has the 60 days no question ask return warranty

    • Should do.

    • Yes I've bought a 50" from them before, returned it 30 days later no drama. Had to give a "reason" and fill out a slip of paper.

Anyway- it says it only has 1 year warranty. Not very long.

Would Aus Comsumer law allow us to claim for 2 years?

      • Buy with a good CC and get an extra year warranty too.

        • Good idea. Cheers

I wonder how this would be for ps4 gaming, like would there be a delay between the controller and what is shown on the tv?
My old plasma (TEAC brand) use to have a 1 second delay where i would shoot with the button of the controller but it would take a second to react on the tv, which would usually end up with me dying in call of duty.

Anyone had any experience with bauhn tv's?

    • +1

I would be very surprised if you had 1000ms latency. The worst that I have heard of is around 100ms on some older plasmas, which is still pretty bad, though only 10% of what you imagined.

Most UHD TVs have pretty poor latency - from memory, the Samsung UA55HU8500 in actual usage, not in game mode, gets somewhere around 80ms latency.

The Samsungs do a fair bit of image processing, though, which contributes - realistically, you're probably looking at somewhere around 50-70ms latency at a guess.

If the primary purpose of the television is gaming, I would look at a Full HD Sony Bravia - something like the 55W800B as an alternative. I believe they state they have somewhere around 8ms latency, but real world testing has shown around 24ms, which is still comparatively the lowest. I should imagine if a lot of unnecessary image processing engines are disabled, you would achieve lower than the 24ms, though.

      • thanks @AlexD.
Its an old Teac 42inch plasma we bought when plasma's first came out(sometime in the 2000's and we paid like $5k). For latency i'm not exactly sure how much ms, but whenever i played call of duty on ps3/4 there was almost a whole second delay from when i shot the opponent to when the bullet left my gun.
I want to replace it, only problem is that it won't die… its outlasted the last 2 lcd's

  • firmware upgrade from Feb 2015 here (in case it's not already upgraded) - http://public.tempoaustralia.com/fw/atvs55-315/mp/

been using Aldi 42" and 47" tv for the past 3 years - no issues on it at all, $499 and $599 back then

the trick to buying this TV is when the doors open GO STRAIGHT TO THE REGISTER and say you want to buy the tv, they will give you a reciept and you go to the storeroom to collect

DO NOT run around aldi like a headless chook looking for it, you're gonna have a bad time

    happy hunting :)

there are also 3 HDMI ports - i hook it up to my PS4 and Computer

    • Do you experience any delay with the ps4? my old plasma suffered with about a second delay from pressing the controller to seeing the character move.

      • nope :) no delay whatsoever, it goes directly through HDMI anyway so….

i stream with it as well so no problems thus far, Aldi has a really good warranty offer so it's got some peace of mind compared to other outlets :)

  • from Tempo Australia :(. Reminds me of my MYER return with the HITACHI Branded version.
I wonder if these ones have similar color saturation issues.

my aldi 32" tv tuner started playing up after a few years so now i have to use a settop box plugged into the hdmi port of the tv to change tv channels.

  • +1

Wow- thought it was a good price then realised it was a 4K-even better,

Hope they've resolved backlight bleed issues from other models (I bought a 50" LCD about 18 months ago, bleed was so bad I returned it).

    • I think for the price/size/resolution you can expect some compromises to have been made in respect to the panel

  • My Brother inlaw and I both have Baughn TV's mine is the lounge tv the entertainment room is a sony. They are both over 12 months old and never missed a beat. As someone said why not take it back aldi give 60 day money back guarantee.

  • It would be nice if it's android

  • +1

Good to see some VERY old Neighbours screen-caps in the instruction manual. Apparently Flick gets wind of the truth about Tad, Paul and Larissa!

  • I got an LG 55" Smart TV on OzB about 4 months ago for $791 delivered… so I don't think this is an amazing deal really.

    • +2

      its 4k

      • Ahhh… dunno how I missed that, my bad!

  • +1

There's much more to a TV than just resolution, especially when content native to that resolution in almost non-existent. I think it's be safe to say that a decent quality 1080p TV for a similar price would probably look better.

  • There are ways to make TVs cheaper, and the simplest way is to use lower grade panels. The best way to find out what grade panels they are using is to check the dead pixel policy. A+ grade panels have no dead or bright pixels - you find any and you can swap it over. A grade is 3 and 7, any more and it's a mixture of A- and B grade panels.

  • This as a pc monitor?

    • That's what I want to know. High resolution and large size make the dot pitch not too crazy.
I've heard of people using 42" 4k TVs as monitors but never 55". Anyone done this?

    • No good if only supports 30hz. Unless your just photo editing were fast motion is not a problem then its fine.

  • +1

For those that are curios, Tempo (Bauhn) support advised me that these will run at 60hz (which makes me even more curious why they would use HDMI 1.4 instead of 2…)

    • Is that 60hz at FHD or UFHD?

    • No way? Nice!

  • +1

So… Any happy customers yet? What's the verdict? Would love to know the answer to the 4k @ 60hz question.

    • Unless someone was keen enough to take the morning / day off I don't imagine we'll find out until this afternoon… out of curiosity though I looked through the online manual and there are "apps" for youtube, facebook, picasa etc so I'm thinking it might be running a skinned version of android… possibly meaning we can sideload Plex and Netflix :P

    • I would have reported my feedback but sold out near me and cbf to run around all aldis. But yeah if anyone bought one can they confirm 60hz at 4k.

    • +3

Ok someone on whirlpool said this:Bought this today and tested it.
Ok so firstly I tested it on my beast pc gaming at 4k. I have a GTX980 and can run 4k at around 50-55fps.
      1) This tv does not support hdmi 2.0 since none of the settings allowed me to run at 60hz 4k. Very laggy. Picture is ok.
The quality as a pc monitor is not bad 6/10 (10 being my current Ben Q WQHD monitor)
      2) Played ps4 and xbox one on it. FIFA looks horrid. COD looks horid. Not good at all for 1080p gaming, does extremely poor job of upscaling.
For console gaming I give it a 3/10.
      3) Tested it as a tv. I couldn't even see the eyes of the people on the morning show. Tried to fiddle with settings but no luck in getting a good picture.
Overall. This tv is cheap for a reason. I would recommend paying double and getting something thats quality like an LG 4k which are going for around 1.4k at 55". Even the Hisense I tested out was 2x better than this tv. The menus look funny and are a bit laggy.
Don't buy it. I wouldn't even be mean enough to give this TV to my grandma for regular dtv viewing.
      Dissapointed and getting a refund.

Glad i didnt buy it now.

  • I think this is better value at 798 (and I am sure JB can knock off another 50). yes 50" screen, but better specs, more reputable than Bauhn
    Hisense 50" 4k Ultra HD

    • "HDMI CEC" almost always refers to HDMI 1.4, as that was pretty much when the technology was introduced.

I would recommend going in and asking about which premium brand 2014 models are still available on clearance - they wouldn't be as cheap, but you would be able to play 4K at 60Hz, and play x265 MP4s. Without these, I would argue that there would be almost no benefit to getting 4K over FullHD.

  • All gone at rosehill and guildford nsw stores. Apparently sold out within 15 mins. Meh saved me the hassle of returning it.

  • So… for those who were lucky enough to get one.. what do people think of the TV?

    • The TV audio is terrible.
Terribly as in AM radio terrible.
tinny and weak, no bass at all.

The Screen is gorgeous. Upscaling works really really well. Compared to the Panasonic TH-50A430A, the Bauhn blows the Panasonic out of the water.

The menus are laggy and terrible. Could be up to 2000 millisecond delay when pressing buttons.

When the TV turns on, it goes through an annoying 'initialization' stage, where there is a little sign saying 'initializing' and none of the remote control functions work. This is especially annoying if the person using the TV prior to you has it at a loud volume, or if you're turning on the TV and trying to be stealthy about it (early morning/late evening).

Overscan/Underscan issues easily resolved in Windows, so not going to make much mention of that.
