Best Monitor alternatives for new MAC PRO (that Black vase looking one)

Hi OZB community,

I seek your experience and constructive review; NOT 2 bobs worth opinion.

I have upgraded my work computer from 27" IMac to new MAC PRO (black cylinder tower) and I am trying to see what is the best alternative monitor for MAC PRO.

I hope that they sell new 5k display monitor. (may be soon?)

my budget is $1500.

doing Photoshop and video editing + direct photo graphical work with shooting RAW.

option from apple is this;

With OS X Mavericks v10.9.3 or later, the following DisplayPort displays are supported at their default using single-stream transport (SST) at 30Hz.

Sharp PN-K321
ASUS PQ321Q -$3k +
Dell UP2414Q = $899 refurbished from dell
Dell UP3214Q = $1499 refurbished from dell
Panasonic TC-L65WT600

With OS X Yosemite, you can use all of the above displays as well as the following:

LG 31MU97 4K display (at 30Hz or 50Hz)

well anything below 60Hz is pretty bad for video isnt it?

so can you tell me your experience.

thank you for your constructive comments.

  • Probably best waiting for an apple 5k one.
    Or buying a retina iMac.
The panel in the retina iMac is 5k @ 60hz. You can't buy these in standalone monitor in Australia and the Dell one in the US is like $3000 so you pretty much get a free computer with your 5k iMac monitor.

  • If you want a 4k or 5k display, just wait until you can afford a good 60hz one. They will come down in price.

    30hz is too compromised.

  • Yeah, don't buy this current mac pro in the hope of using 4k well. When I plug my top of the range macbook pro15 into my dad's 4k TV, its only 30hz, so video is not amazing at 4k (choppy) and the computer does not have the power to extend a display as well as run the retina screen (the 4k screen becomes super choppy), you can only mirror displays for acceptable performance. You are better off waiting till apple release their own 5k display and it will probably come with an updated pro too. I don't like your chances of getting it for $1500 though.

    • HP is releasing the HP Z27q soon, I think this could be priced around $1,2K USD.

  • I have my eye on
