    See an accountant or solicitor.

Free advice is often the most expensive. 2jzzzz is right. Pay a professional.

I have no direct experience, but if you can document the amounts and dates, the solicitor can then work out each parties interest at various times.
You need to provide records for items you had responsibility for, or were jointly responsible for.
If you have good records, it will be good for you. If the other party has poor records for the items they were responsible for, I think a competent advocate will be able to protect your interests, especially if you make a separate list of what you valued those items at on the date of separation.

To agree with other posters, I am in no way suggesting you do not work with a family law expert on this. Just saying that if you have your stuff in order it is less likely to go wrong, and will be cheaper.
It's like doing a tax return. Sure, you can just front up to H&R Block with nothing but a group certificate and they will get you a $300 return.
If you keep all your work expense receipts, charity receipts etc. then your accountant can get a superior return for you.

I would be interested in your first hand experience after this is all over, if you would be in a position to let us know how it went.
