    2.4GHz wifi
    100Mb/s ethernet.

You get what you pay for.

Both of those things would rarely matter to any typical consumer just wanting to browse the web..

deal breaker would be the 2gb single slot ram

price was and had been lower/similar before with same spec laptops

From memory (I think its this model) the RAM is impossible, or requires full deconstruction of the laptop, to upgrade. So buyer beware. Windows 8 doesn't run all that well on only 2GB RAM.

It runs fine aslong as you dont run alot of programs or tonnes of tabs on your browser open.

        • Yes, but it is an exercise in frustration every time you do want to open up a browser when you are using powerpoint or similar. I agree it is great value to get a new laptop for under $250, but unless you have very specific needs (e.g. a point-of-sale system, or other limited role) it will be a growing annoyance.

        • @mskeggs: I never said it's great value lol i said 2gb is the absolute lowest amount of ram id use.

Im useing a HP stream 11 right now which cost me $100 used on gumntree which has 2gb of ram and it runs fine for the price. i couldnt seen myself paying over $200 for this or any laptop with 2gb ram.

        • @holden93:
How does the stream go for web browsing? Does it handle sites with a lot of client side scripting (tumblr, flickr etc.) ok? I guess, is the processor the bottleneck or the memory? Because they look like great value machines. (Except every review says the screen is teh suck).

        • +1

@mskeggs: Ive never used those sites before but i just loaded up both including my normal facebook and here using Opera web browser and currently The processor is fluctuating between 10% and 30% the ram is at 1.0gb usage.
The sites seen to be working fine a bit slow loading which is normal for my slow internet connection 1.2mbps on a good day :(
Bottle neck is hard as some things are more CPU intensive then how much ram is needed.
CPU mostly when first opening programs it hits 100% usage then after a few seconds goes back down to under 50% depending on program your using.
Ram right now with Opera, Chrome, VLC,task manager and Tixati (torrent downloader) open it's at 1.5gb ram and the CPU is fluctuating between 20% and 50% usage

Screen is pretty bad but it is a cheap device so dont exspect anything special

Battery life Is better then any device ive every had and ive had many laptops tablets and phones

Head into a JBHIFI and have a play with one on display.

        • @holden93:
I think I will give one a go at JB. They look like a lot of bang for buck, and I have seen them under $200 2nd hand (your $100 one is a great bargain).

        • @mskeggs: Mate not to brag lol but you have absolutely not idea How much of a bargain it was.
I went to pick it up and the buy handed me two large boxes with a full desktop computer brand new T-box
pc screen and speakers. i was lost for words when i picked it up the guys house was a mansion though.
I sold it all not including the stream 11 for $430.

still though $100 just for the laptop is a bargain i was just very lucky.

      • Yes did one of these. Had to strip it right down to access and upgrade RAM.
PITA but did it to help a mate. Better, but still ran reasonably crap due to N2830 processor.
Good price but very limited unit.

      • I have an Atom tablet with 1Gb ram running WIn 8.1 bing and runs smoothly. You just need to avoid heavy resoruce usages such as chrome and microsoft office. Heavy or big software tends to eat up RAM.

        • I think it depends on the laptop as well. I'm fixing up a dell inspiron 11 3000 now and even with the latest BIOS, it would take 5 seconds just to open explorer from Idle.. Bumped up the RAM from 2GB to 4GB and now its fluid and quick. So yeah, i guess as always your results may vary depending on the laptop.

  • Just install elementaryOS if you're planning to use this for basic tasks. Runs like a champ on older hardware and looks great!.
