Disposing of a Car

A much loved family car (16 years old) has serious issues which may be the heater leaking water and/or water leaking into the engine (blown head gaskets?). Paint flaking off the boot.

Expecting the repairs will cost much more than the car is worth.

What's the best way to dispose of the car in terms of getting something for it? It tough letting go of a car that cost me $22,500 for $250.

    Gumtree or wreckers.

  • Can you tell us what type of car it is?
Agree with Gumtree, costs nothing to put it on and you never know pending how common the car is.

  • 1998 Mitsubishi Magna, 190,000km

Bought a new battery and alternator about a year ago. Bummer about the head gaskets because everything else is just fine.

  • ebay? 250 reserve.

Mention the issues, take photos of all the panels and items like headlights

Take it back to the manufacturer and demand a refund. Tell them that your salesman didnt let you know to expect your $22,500 investment would only last 16 years. If they refuse, then contact the consumer commission in your state

Fire Dept. If you like making the odd positive donations. They need cars to practice/train emergency staff on jaws of life equipment etc…
I've given 3 crap cars to them in perth over the years.

If you paid with paypal you could probably still get your $22500 back. And the Mitsubishi dealer would be stuck with the return shipping bill too.

Practice DIY repairs on the car. stuff like replacing the brakes, wheel bearing, rotors. All decently easy if you know what you are doing.

You can sell for parts seeing as the battery and alternator are somewhat new.

  • I've asked this before and got a few tips. All that's been mentioned here is good. You could also try strip accessories and parts and sell them individually, but space/time/effort are all considerations you'll want to balance.

Not sure why people panic the **** out over repairing older cars…

I just replaced my alternator on a 25 year old car with a brand new unit AND labour for $330. A oil leak on the rocker cover gasket cost me $80 with labour included.

Get a compression test done and if it comes back good, drop a new radiator, cap and hoses as well as a thermostat into it. The paint? Just getting it detailed or the boot resprayed, probably $300.
