Verite Team S 105 Road Bike $868.10 Shipped

From Cycling Express. An entry point to a full carbon, with mostly Shimano 105 components. Gets good reviews. I'm not expecting a miracle ride, but good bang for buck I think (not that I really know). Shipping to me was $59, but you can pick it up at some bike shops (not sure if they charge extra for that).

  • how do you think it goes to reid cycles?

Reid's top three road bikes on their site are worth comparing. They have aluminium frames though (this one is all carbon), but otherwise look similar spec. Reid may be better to deal with than Cycling Express (who from what I've read could do better). The 2014 Falco Elite for $699 is a good price.

With road bikes especially anything if you are spending a decent amount I'd get it from a local store with properly fit - most of the local stores give you 6wks free service and this is very handy as components will need tweaking after its first use… also warranty/repair handling is a lot easier.

    • Yes, sure if you need the service, but if you prefer to DIY online is cheaper and easier if you're not near a store or just don't like them (I've generally found them rude and patronising).

    • If you arent sure about things like the length of stem you need for your reach, the degree of float you will need in your pedals or the right width of handlebars for your shoulders, buying from a Local Bike Shop is worth a few extra $$. If you are just buying a bike for a short 25Km commute to work etc then probs no big deal. If you are planning on getting in the training Kms for 'around the Bay' or next year's 3 peaks, trust me when I tell you, the niggly little things from a poor bike fit will not only slow you down but also cause various bits of your body to hurt or go numb!!

      • The only other bike I've ever bought (from a LBS) was a lousy fit and about 2 sizes off what it should have been. This from a reputable, very long standing shop in Melbourne. So you don't always get good service from them, sometimes they just want to flog stuff they have in stock like any other salesperson.

Generally though you should get better service for the extra cash you pay.

'Current model' 105 is 5800. 5700 is prior to Apr 2014.

    • and 5800 is 11 speed whereas 5700 is 10 speed so 1 extra gear on the newer groupset.

  • I've actually seen these in person and they are very heavy for a carbon frame. I'd actually recommend a light alloy frame over these.

In addition the fsa crank they were using was prone to failure. Dont know if theyve changed this.

  • I posted the deal for the Falco a few weeks ago. They only have XL available now. That frame is alloy 9.5kg so a 9kg with CF frame seems really heavy. Considering the cheapest 5700 full groupset I could find online is about $450, I wouldn't expect much from this CF frame. Then again, I didn't expect much from the Falco and it's been quite durable, surviving a 25+ km/h crash unscathed (I unfortunately didnt). So this might be a good bike.
Keep in mind the stem is 120mm, so you have to factor in the reach. I'm 170cm and the 100mm stem on the Falco feels too long on a medium (54cm) frame. YMMV. (Sydster) Reid don't really have a fitting system, and the most you can get is a short distance test ride. wfdTamar seems to have experienced the understaffed nature of the Reid store. I went early. Was first in the store and got out just as it got busy, but the staff were already showing signs of strain.
I should also mention, you should check out some of Durianrider's cycling videos on Youtube. He is pro-Aluminium, although he does own various different material bikes. I've had limited experience but I tend to agree with most of his points about bike fit, materials, hydration, locks, shoes + pedals, and frame material for beginners. Check out his vid on the Osprey Elite 2014. Great cheap bike but he is spot on about the bars.

    • Never been to either store, only judging by what I've read. Must be par for the course with these cut priced online places.

      • I've built several bikes from parts out of 'cut price online places', both MTBs and Road Bikes. Mostly from places like CRC and Ribble. FYI I bought the 105 5800 Groupset on a Ribble special for about $350 ish I think late last year, stuck it on a Giant frame I bought through a Facebook group then plonked on some 2nd hand wheels and presto, road bike for my son!! Like all shops, you cant generalize all shops based on one bad experience.

  • I'd wouldn't buy from cycling express ever again. I had two warranty claims with them over their shonky CF frames and in the end I had to use an ombudsman to recoup my money and ended up buying from CRC and wiggle.

Save yourself the pain, the service is worst than telstra in 2012. You've been warned.

  • Use code EGGSPRESS10 to get it for 10% off. -

    • That code has expired. Asked them if they'd refund the difference $89.90 since my bike hadn't even shipped when that code came up - no!
