It is China Model.

The Asus ZenFone 2 is one of the very pleasant surprises unveiled at CES 2015. Asus really outdid itself in its signature value-for-money territory, outing a phone with 1080p display, 13 MP camera, fast 64-bit processor, and a hearty battery for two Benjamins in starting price.

Design: taking a cue
Taking a little cue from LG, the ZenFone 2 sports a volume rocker placed fair and square on the back of the phone. By the company's own calculations, its phablet has a screen-to-body ratio of 72%, which falls in the middle as far as 2014 devices are concerned, and offers the passable dimensions of 6 x 3.03 x 0.43 in (152.5 x 77.2 x 10.9 mm), though nothing extraordinary like the G3, for instance.

The ZenFone 2 has a chassis with a brushed metal texture, which again reminds strongly of the G3, and the dual tone flash on the back does nothing to disperse this impression. Asus is not being unoriginal, though, and promises a number of special Transfusion and Illusion models with rather unique shells – the former line combines two colors, while the latter offers some odd patterns to go with the phone's shell.

Display
The Zenfone 2 display is a Gorilla Glass 3-protected, 5.5-inch panel with a flagship-standard resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, returning an excellent 403 pixels per inch count, and offering 400 nits of brightness. There's really nothing to stand out in the screen specs department here, but for this starting price Asus's offering is more than generous, and will fit most everyone's needs.

Processor and memory: first with 4 GB RAM and 64-bit mobile Atom
Asus has a long history with Intel's mobile processors, and the ZenFone 2 isn't breaking that trend, though it is now a trailblazer for the new 64-bit frugal Atom silicon. Namely, it sticks with the LTE-enabled Intel Atom Z3560 processor with four cores that can reach frequencies of up to 1.8GHz, and a PowerVR G6430 GPU with OpenGL 3.0 support. This processor is proven to be both fast and frugal, so you won't have any issues running the latest and greatest Android software on the ZenFone, including heavy 3D games.

The company's biggest surprise with the handset is left for the memory department, though. The ZenFone 2 might start you off with 2 GB of RAM in the basic version, but the more expensive ones will come with 4 GB of RAM, making it the first smartphone announced with more than 3 GB of RAM, which the native 64-bit Android support, and the new 64-bit processors make possible now. Asus claims seven times faster gaming performance than the previous ZenFone edition, which has to count for something.

Camera
The camera at the back is a 13-megapixel unit with 5 element, f/2.0 aperture lens, complemented by a dual-color Real Tone LED flash. At the front, we are looking at a respectable, 5-megapixel selfie snapper with wide-angle (85-degree) lens, and an option to shoot selfie panoramas.

Asus also made it clear over and over again that its PixelMaster software is available with both cams and offers goodies such as a low light shooting mode that can supposedly snap photos that are up to 400% brighter, though the digital noise at this level will likely be pretty visible, too.

      you spelt paste wrong

You spelled spelled in my least favourite way..

        • Wheat do you mean?

          @Steptoe:
I mean spelt is a half-baked way of spelling it

        • @thebargainhunter: thatll depend on where and when you went to school. ive learnt, yes learnt it as spelt. same with knelt, burnt and spoilt

        • @bbyboy:
My teacher yelt at me when I spelt it like that…

        • @thebargainhunter: isn't spelt the hardy wheat grown mostly in Europe ?

I was just reading up on this phone and its gazillion different models. This isn't the Taiwanese model so no 700MHz band 28 LTE (Telstra and Optus newer 4G network). Still OK for Voda users, sticking to major cities or not fussed about 4G. And it is only ~$400

    • Yeah, I have the ZenFone 5 and it was a challenge keeping up with all the variants of it.

Look forward to ASUS finally releasing the ZenFone for sale locally.

  • They have stock ready to ship? Because ASUS HK store sold out for sometime already.

Limited LTE Bands on this sku: FDD-LTE 1800(band 3)/2100MHz (Band 1) which looks like it would make this the (CN/IN) version.

DWI has the cheaper ZE550ML spec (720p/Z3560/1.8Ghz/2GB/16GB) for A$269 which includes a better range of LTE bands: FDD-LTE: 2100MHz(1)/1900MHz(2)/1800MHz(3)/1700MHz AWS(4)/850MHz(5)/2600MHz(7)/900MHz(8)/800MHz(20)

IMO the best sku to look for on these ZenFone 2's is the Tiawan version as it includes 700MHz/Band 28 that both Telstra & Optus are using for their daster 4GX/4G Plus
    FDD-LTE: (TW)
    2100MHz(1)/1900MHz(2)/1800MHz(3)/1700MHz AWS(4)/850MHz(5)/900MHz(8)/700MHz(28)

    FYI (from: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies )
LTE Bands In Use in Australia
Band 1 = 2100MHz (used by Telstra, Optus refarmed 3G spectrum)
Band 3 = 1800MHz (used by Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, ex 2G spectrum)
Band 5 = 850MHz (used by Vodafone, refarmed 3G spectrum)
Band 7 = 2600MHz (used by Telstra, Optus)
Band 8 = 900MHz (used by Telstra, refarmed 2G spectrum)
Band 28 = 700MHz (used by Telstra, Optus, ex Analogue TV spectrum)
    Band 40 = 2300MHz (used by Optus)

  • Anyone is buying the phone?

  • If it's Chinese model, I'm quite curious as to how they got their hands on the stock as it was just released in China on March 23 and it's almost impossible to get one in China due to the high demand.

  • I contacted cs via live support chat to inquire whether or not the phone was even in stock a I noted it had listed the red as presale ends 25th April. CS agent Vita said the grey wasnt in stock and not in presale.

    Someone asked this though:

    By pkloop Apr-14/2015 10:04:53
    Question:
when the phone going to ship out?
    Reply:
Hi, this phone we only have gray color in stocks. If you place order with grey one, we can ship out within 2 days. If you place order with red one, you need to wait for restocks here. Thanks

I'd buy this, if only the AUD was a little stronger and the battery was removable :(

  • It's a great phone, I bought the basic model in Hong Kong last week and amazed at the price/performance. Pity the battery is non removable though, but by the time it becomes a problem it'll be new phone time anyway.

  • +1

Has anyone seen the basic (2gb ram, 1080 screen) model cheap please?

    • +1

I assume you mean the 16gb one, the cheapest one. It's $283 (AUD, inc. postage) on Expansys. I'm not sure about expansys but it seems reputable.

  • How do you think this phone compares to the Elephone P7000?

    http://www.coolicool.com/elephone-p7000-mtk6752-octa-core-55...

    229 USD right now

  • Hope this warning may be useful to some buyers:

Be careful with China version of Zenfone because their SKU usually are CUCC or CN version. Some resellers re-flashed it to the Taiwan (TW) version or International (WW) version. In doing so, it renders the On-The-Air (OTA) update inoperable & useless because of SKU & new ROM mismatched. This means user has to do system update manually every single time which is a pain in the a** because you need to do ADB side load that kind of stuff which if done incorrectly will brick your phone.

  • +1

This deal is $1.50AU less at expansys, they have red and grey available. They also have the 64gb with better processor for $468 and the 16gb with 2gb ram for $283. I'm just a newbie, so if there's a reason no one has posted this yet then soz.

    • Thanks mate, ordered a 16gb one :)

  • Anyone want the cheaper version can also order from eGlobal.
