I have just over 700,000 Awards points on my platinum CBA credit card. Could you guys tell me what would be the best possible way to redeem them. Thanks.

  • $500 petrol vouchers for Caltex is about 91,000 points.

From what I have seen, anything other than vouchers gets you less dollars per point.

  • Nothing from the award products catalogue. Use them to fund either everday expenses like the suggestion above and get $3500 in fuel or groceries or use them to fund travel. 350k Velocity points will get you most of 2 business class return to LA from the east coast plus $300 in taxes or 4 economy seats return to LA plus taxes. You could also get to London for slightly more points on Etihad. Do not transfer to Velocity and buy vouchers, that is worse than the products in the awards catalogue. Velocity points table and milage calc here: https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Redeem/Airline…

    • 700k cba points is 280k velocity. 2.5cba/1velocity

op if there no urgency to convert, id suggest wait for the award store to have a special (10% off etc.), and as above, convert to fuel cards/travel

      • +1

it's 2:1 conversion for plat and diamond cards, not 2.5:1 as per website.

if you are after some the awards items i believe some of them are better rate than transferring to virgin/qantas to obtain. requires less points.

i'd suggest something that you'd actually use, e.g. gift cards/award products

of course, best value would be airline upgrades with virgin.

  • Would it be better for me to buy an economy fare & then use my points to get an upgrade to business class rather than buying business class directly. Can I only use them for velocity or qantas frequent flyers are possible as well.

    • +1

only velocity, you can't transfer existing points over to qantas.

yes using the velocity points as upgrades gets you much better value-per-point than buying tickets using the points.

      • The only issue with this is that for long haul fares with Velocity you have to buy flexi economy or premium economy to upgrade which means you cannot take advantage of those $1k sale fares that come up. Then again, the business class upgrades are only 45k points each way from these fares.

You also need to be gold or platinum frequent flyer to upgrade long haul.

        • How Do I become gold or platinum frequent flyer with Virgin. And can I use velocity points to upgrade with same amount of points on Virgin code share airlines.

        • Getting frequent flyer gold/platinum requires you to fly with the airline, not just earn miles. Most of the info is here: https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Status/

Not sure about upgrading other airlines, you've reached the limit of my knowledge and experience.

You can however book economy and business class reward seats at any status level, and upgrade any domestic fare and flexi-fare short haul (NZ & Pacific) routes. Just cannot upgrade long haul lower than gold.

  • GIFT CARD for sure

  • Check with CBA if they still allow existing points to be churned across to the frequent flyer programs when you first link 'em up. It allowed me to do that couple of years ago, not sure if they've changed their rules. You could sell the points for $7k and there's a market for them.

    • So can I sell them as it is or I need to transfer them to airline points first. Which frequent flyer program did you change them with.

      • Speak to CBA first to see if they will let you do a bulk transfer.

  • Do you guys think I should take the plunge & go for the following offer of Virgin Velocity points:
