  • Damit, why did micro servers use udimms!?

    • +1

HP Microserver? upto NL54 they use regular DIMMs I don't know about newer Intel ones.

      • hint, I was talking about the newer gen 8's ;)

        • +2

Ewww the nasty one which only holds 4HDD's spit, spit :(

        • @hamwhisperer:
unless you use cable ties and the optical drive sata port ;)

        • @wisc: Can you really fit 6 in the Gen 8 series? I got the impression it just wasn't feasible?
I really like the 54L , I wish they kept the form factor, switched to Intel to fix the CPU speed issue, added USB3 / second ESATA / HDMI - would've been amazing.

        • @hamwhisperer:

not 6, 4 in the bays and one suspended with cable ties is possible… so five total… didn't realise you could do six in the N54L.

you could also put an SSD in the optical spot, but there wouldn't be any more ports unless you used the pcie for a sata/raid card.

        • @wisc: I actually did some googling, some crazy bastards managed to get 6 (with 2.5" drives) some kind of sideways mounting kit

I wish it was N54L sized (I got 6HDD's and an SSD in mine at one point - but the SATA port multiplier sucked)

  • Shipping $25 to Melbourne for a single unit.

    • Is that Australia Post eParcel?. I'm getting $12 shipping for Australia Post.

      • If I remember, ITEstate sometimes have great deals… until you see the shipping.

        • Crazy shipping price for Fastway shipping $29. Australia Post is a bit cheaper at least for me at $12 to Rockhampton QLD for a single stick of RAM.

      • That's using Fastway, the only option I'm given on the site.

  • I wonder if these would work in a HP N54L server … It does support ECC but not sure if its compatible with these particular modules.

    • I'm actually running non ECC in my N40L But its only used as a xbmc box
Not sure if N54 is quite the same

      • +1

You sure? Since when? Mine are full-size.

      • the Microservers are not that micro…

      • +2

Incorrect. Microservers use UDIMM not SODIMM memory modules. Official memory specs for the N54L:
        Memory:
        o Two (2) DIMM slots
        o 4GB (1x4GB) Standard/8GB Maximum, using PC3-10600E DDR3 Unbuffered (UDIMM) ECC memory, operating at max. 800MHz

        Memory
        Type
        PC3-10600E unbuffered DDR3 ECC operating at 800MHz
        Standard
        1 GB (1x1GB)
        4GB (1x4GB)
        Maximum
        8 GB

Unofficially you can get 16GB (2x 8GB UDIMM's) to work if you use the right brand/model of ram.

    • I am wondering the same thing too. The specifics of this RAM which i question compatibility with the N54L are:

      1) These are 'registered' modules according to the picture; i didn't think registered RAM was supported by Microservers
      2) The form factor of the RAM vs form factor that the N54L uses

Can anyone with a Microserver help?

      • +5

Microserver n54l supports ecc non-registered memory. I've tried using registered in mine and it doesn't boot.

Thank you for your feedback. I believe this answers the question most of us HP proliant microserver owners have.

Fortunately standard run of the mill memory seems to be stable — we have one server (N54L) @ work that we installed 16gb into running Proxmox (KVM virtualisation) that is now hitting 293 days up-time with no issues.

        • Thank you for your advise. Do you know the largest and cheapest memory configuration HP N54L can support? Any suggestion for the brand/type?

        • @ben1680:
Largest amount of ram seems to depend on certain factors. I've got the modded bios in two N54L's and run hyperx fury ram in one and a cheaper brand in the other fine. Fury ram is overkill sure but not that much different in price plus I can swap it to other machines without hassles. Some people report 8GB max though. main thing is to keep the memory profile low as there isn't much space to work with. There is a forum somewhere specifically talking about N54L ram support.

    • I got the impression from OCAU forums that you want ECC Unbuffered in the Microserver :( which is pricy and rare. It's super picky about RAM oand only a few select modules work over 4gb.

      • for production use sure ECC is good but its pricey and hard to justify for home use..

    • +1

microservers require unregistered ram. They will work with ecc or non-ecc, but it must be unregistered, and this appears registered (otherwise I would probably buy 8gb).

  • Will this work on a 1155 motherboard?

    • +2

Check your mobo if it supports ECC memory first.

      • good deal if you have a xeon and a x79/x99

1333 is a bit slow though

        • +2

X99 won't work as it uses DDR4. Also most X79 board don't support ECC except for Asrock (but only un-buffered ie. not registered) and they need a Xeon CPU too.

        • @silent1:
          Thanks.

  • +2

wow…great price for RAM….shame it is so limited in application

  • No use in a HP Microserver right? Has to be specifically 2x8GB ECC Unbuffered yeah? (FreeNAS)

    • +1

been answered a few times above already…

  • Do note, if you're going to use these in OEM workstations (a lot of which do have ECC RAM) like the HP Z-series, Lenovo ThinkStation P-series or the Dell Precision series then you may possibly run into issues when making warranty claims as the OEMs' Business/Enterprise/Extended warranties do exclude supporting hardware that was not part of the original configuration when it was sold.

I emphasise possibly because in the past, even on "modified" workstations where I changed the RAM/SSD/HDD/GPU, HP & Dell for instance honoured any service calls I made and basically said unless the hardware in question was reponsible for causing any other hardware to stop working, they would support the workstation in question, as normal.

Good luck actually ever getting it from these dodgy characters.

Make sure they have stock before you order

    • I have bought from IT Estate for about 10 years. Never an issue. Although I local and can pickup in person.

  • +1

Damn shame this doesn't work in most desktop motherboards, I'd snap up at least 2 of those 16GB sticks if they did.

    • me too….I did a quick check to see if they could be used on the off chance

      • +2

Wish normal RAM was that cheap. Prices are supposed to be the other way around

        • Sweet digital memories —- I sold 16gb to a mate @ work for $100 because at the time, 16gb (8Gb x 2) was around $120, regretting it now given the price of ram and basically my excuse for not selling any of my old stuff any more just in case it bumps up in price — who knows my old AGP videocards one day might be worth a mint!…

On a more sombre note, I also remember when I bought 32gb (8gb x 4 1866mhz) for $200 — this was about 2 years ago and I SO wish I bought more given what we know now about prices…

        • @digitalaxon: Showing my age a bit here, but I remember my first RAM upgrade. I bought 8MB for $400 (when 400 was probably worth a 800 in today's terms).

        • @digitalaxon: I bought 16GB value select for around $100, figured I can just add another 16GB and it will be inexpensive since it would fall in price. Now it's like $160 =(

        • @digitalaxon: yep, I bought 2x8 1866CL9 ram in 2012 for about 100 new.

4GB for 0.99c in 2013. God times. My local DSE only had one stick left though :(

        • @salem: wow…I can't believe I missed that one, but then again I am not a fan of the brand

        • @aim54x: it's been humming along just fine in my n54l ever since, paired with a Kingston 4gb. :)

        • @salem: thats good to hear, I generally prefer Corsair/G.Skill for my RAM needs, fancy packaging but at the same time they also seem to offer the higher performance stuff.

  • It's Samsung brand.

  • +1

The 8GB is now $79. Is there a code to get it for $59 or did the price go up?

  • Appears to be Sold Out Of the 8GB But the 16GB sticks still say in stock

    • But at $169?

      • Sold out of the 16GB stick.
