Advice on getting into RC flying

Hey all,

I'm looking to get into RC quadcoptors as a hobby and for some amateur aerial imaging / recording. While the likes of DJI's Phantom or Inspire RTFs looks very enticing, I've never flown RCs before so want to get a bit of practice before handling (or destroying) an expensive kit.

So - am looking for suggestions on entry level RCs that would be good for a beginner to learn the ins and outs of RC flying. Ideally not too expensive, something that can take a battering, and also with decent battery so that I'm not recharging the thing every 6 minutes…

cheers

  • I was also looking at it before, I haven't began yet but this link was pretty useful, though US prices http://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-drones,review-2412.html

The SYma X5C is apparently very popular. Read about it on reddit as a sub $60 dollar drone that is crash resistant (so you don't kill it the first day you play with it).
Was featured in Gizmodo as one of the popular starting quads.

The second recommendation is Cheerson CX10-A, which is about $20 USD and it is known for ease of use and being very durable. You still wouldn't want to crash it though.

  • Thanks guys.

@scrimshaw: Cheerson CX-10 looks interesting, but isn't it too small in that it may not enable me to learn the skills to help me with flying lager RCs in the future?

It's just to help you familiarise with flight controls and understanding the basics of flight. The handling characteristics of every toy will vary depending on prop size, motor type and so on.

I believe the point of going with a microquad is that you can train yourself to fly without experiencing the heartbreak when you crash it, because it's so cheap.
