Can you change internal flight plans. Kilauea is very active. I'd be headed to the Big Island instead.

  • Some things we did in Oahu;
Swimming at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Its kind of like the GBR, but I didn't think it was quite as good. But different, so worth a look.

Lots of shopping to be had at Waikele Outlet Mall, Ala Moana Center, Kalakaua Ave and maybe International Market Place along Kalakaua Ave if you're up
to the flea market scenario. (Lots of good food here though - And not open every day..)
PROTIP: Take as few clothes (1-2 changes) as possible. You need bag space. Go to the outlets and stock up. Heaps of Cheap Brand name merch.

You have to do a surf lesson (or if you already can, a surf) at Waikiki beach.

There are a few Gun ranges and beautiful golf courses around if that's your thing.

I'd say just soak up the sun, food, drink, and enjoy it. Hawaii is beautiful.

I believe the International marketplace closed down last year. They are building -another- shopping centre. Such a shame, that market was great.

Agree with your other suggestions though. A visit to the north shore is worthwhile too, pipeline etc.

      • yeah i was there last month and it was just a big construction site.

      • Ah, Thanks for the update. I was there in 2012.. So no doubt things have changed since..

      • Terrible :( looks like the new one will price out the small guy, yet again.

A week in Oahu is a bit long (3-4 days is good). But anyway…. get a car and drive around the island. Weekends are good because they are quiet.

    Oahu:
    - Turtle bay
    - Kailua beach
    - Lanikai
    - Haleiwa town is nice

    Also recommend what @Draxxx said.

I've also heard that Diamond head is good for hiking.

I'll second Hanauma Bay and walking up Diamond Head whilst on Oahu. And the Big Island is a must see. Try to spend some time around Kona and visit a coffee plantation.

  • Hanauma bay was really good, cheap (like $30 for shuttle, gear and park entry) and saw plenty of cool fish. If you drive there make sure you get there early to get a park.

Pearl harbor was good with the USS Missouri being my favourite part.

Big Island is so great - the Volcanoes National Park is fantastic. Car hire in the US is really cheap too. And as said previously, a week in Oahu is probably a bit long.

And if you're over 35 years old, go to 41-505 Kalanianaole Hwy. Trust me.

  • No one has mentioned http://www.dole-plantation.com/, home of the amazing Dole whip, http://www.alohastadiumswapmeet.net/ and http://www.polynesia.com/ (there's a 10% saving if booking more than 10 days in advance).

    Plus, in Waikiki http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g60982-d2671…

  • We were also told about this, as it is kind of hidden from tourists in Makaha Valley - very interesting (though make sure you have mozzie repellant on!!!) https://www.google.com.au/search?q=Kaneaki+Heiau&oq=Kaneaki+…

There was fruit growing in the area when we were there, you are welcome to pick the fruit but make sure you leave some as an offering (there is a place marked for this). You can only get to the place through a gated area, you just have to say you want to see the Kaneaki Heiau.

  • Hire a stretch Limo from ABC Limo's and do a 4 hour tour of local landmarks and beaches in HNL, we paid USD$225 between 6 of us.

Grab a drink Friday night at Hilton Hawaiian Village and watch the fireworks.

Visit the Waikele discount complex (book free bus ride) top brands at give away prices, sample Skechers shoes $35

Best feed in town at Cheesecake factory, shop for ladies of all ages is next door Forever 21.

Have a feed at Bubba Gumps

Take a day and shop at Al Moana centre
