  • Anyone know where I could get a nice case sleeve for this laptop? Or a nice skin would be good too

    • +2

Most 14" sleeves would do. I'd check out Officeworks and Harvey Norman. JB might even have some. Take your laptop with you that way you will know what fits.

  • Is anyone else having issues with the latest updates?

Mine had done two or three stages of updates since I've bought it, and they took a while, but fair enough. Until today, when I went to restart, and it started updating, but it went straight to "update 120 of 120" and it's been like this for over two hours.

I would have thought with an SSD and a broadband connection, that one update could not possibly take that long..?

    • +2

After about 4 hours of this, I forced a shutdown by holding the power button. started it again, it ran through the 'configuring updates' upon start up, and all seems fine now.

  • +3

Hi Guys.. I replaced 2GB RAM with 8GB today and performance is much improved. There's almost no lag at all. I can now open and browse 10+ tabs on Chrome (which I am used to) with one of them being YouTube, which wasn't just possible with 2GB RAM. SSD isn't really required if booting speed isn't your concern and usage is more of browsing and MS Office. I don't restart computer every time so booting speed doesn't matter to me and my usage is mainly Word, Excel, PDF Reader and a bunch of browsing tabs on Chrome. And existing 500 HDD with 8GB RAM works fine for me.

    • +1

SSD doesn't just make a big difference to start up and shutdown speed. Your programs will load faster. You can access files faster and copy them faster too. Once you got SSD you'll find it difficult to go back to a conventional HDD

  • +1

anyone wanting to upgrade to ssd can use the buit-in acer recovery management tool to reinstall windows

  • +2

Has anyone else noticed their SSD limited to SATA2/300 ?

After installing everything on my laptops I noticed a bit of lag for SSD (still fast it felt like it should be better) so I looked deeper and both laptops are limiting the SSD's to SATA2/300. Performance (Read/Write and IO) is about half what it should be.

I've tried uninstall/reinstall the Intel drivers to no avail. Both in GPT mode, both UEFI, must be a driver problem but nothing showing up in Device Manager.

They're still fast but my shiny new Samsung 850 EVO can't stretch its legs in this mode.

    • +2

Uh oh, the board might be limited to SATA II meaning you'll only get 3gb/s instead of the 6 that you would get with a SATA III mobo.

Edit: Could you do a read/write test of the SSD and post your results?

Edit2: Install Samsung Magician and let us know what it is reporting.

      • Samsung Magician reckons the laptop doesn't support SATA3, so I'd desperately like to know if anyone else can verify this. Just my 2 laptops or everyones? You can see results are indicative of SATA2 speeds with the exception of IO results in SM, which is just woeful, not much faster than HDDs.

        ATTO:

        Samsung Magician:
        http://i58.tinypic.com/8vnmnq.png

Samsung Magician SATA3 not available message:
        http://i60.tinypic.com/2w39th3.png

My other laptop is doing the same thing but it's a Corsair SSD so I can't use SM. Either all these laptops are limited it SATA2 which would be odd in 2015, or I've installed both of mine incorrectly. Clean Bing x64 installs. Absolutely everything else is perfect in both.

Crystal Disk Info shows the SSD running in SATA2(300) and SATA3(600) is available but not being used. It's only studying the SSD no the laptop though.

        • +1

Yeah, the CPU supports SATA2 interface only, as confirmed here - http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/embedded/products/bay…

My Samsung 840 EVO comes up as SATA2 as well.

        • +2

Yep those results are about what you'd expect for SATA2. It's looking like SATA3 is not available on this laptop which is a shame in 2015. I was looking at getting the Samsung 850 SSD for this laptop but I think I'll go el-cheapo (Sandisk or Kingston) on the SSD now. AFAIK there is no "switch" that you can use to go between SATA2 or SATA3. Either your laptop has it and provided the SSD is SATA3 that is what it'll use. Otherwise SATA2 will be used. :(

        • @doze:

Thanks for confirming. I just did a clean install to test again in case it was something windows installer added, I also wondered if it was a "bing" limitation but I'll restore my image now and be content knowing it's normal. Seems strange in this day and age but I guess budget systems have to cut features somewhere.

        • +1

          @djevoultion:

Yeah I would have got a budget ssd if I knew, my much older ssd almost matches this one.

  • +1

OK I might just upgrade the RAM ifs its only sata 2.

    • +2

Don't get me wrong, I'd still take SATA2 ssd over a mechanical drive, someone above said once you've used an ssd is very hard to go back and that's so true.

What I was implying is if it was between a small (crazy fast) ssd or a larger average one, the latter makes more sense for this laptop - from a purely performance standpoint.

    • +2

Just as Click_It said. An SSD upgrade will also use less power than a mechanical hard drive so you get more battery :)

      • +1

Umart stores have a 128gb SanDisk for $68 currently. It's a no brainer.

        • I'm presuming that delivery would be extra. I don't have a umart near me.

        • +1

          @djevoultion:

Yeah ditto. Their delivery most likely kills it. Awesome for those who can pick up.

        • @Click_It:

Yep. I think I'll just wait for a good ram and SSD deal to come along. Don't have the laptop with me yet so not in a hurry. Thanks for the link anyway.

        • +1

          @djevoultion:

SE will run another ssd deal soon I'm sure.

Every now and then there are ram deals too. If cheap enough I might upgrade my other one to 4gb ($30 would be my trigger)

      • Yes, this I've noticed! Between 6-8w power draw during use :)

Anyone else think we might have issues with the tax invoice part of this cashback?

I just logged into my JB Hifi account and went into 'my orders' and the tax invoice for this order… and it doesn't contain the ABN, which Acer specify needs to be on the invoice.

Read some dodgy things about Acer's policies on cashbacks and I'm starting to question this… I'll send it away nonetheless.

    • +2

I had the JB invoice, no probs, they accepted the invoice. Somehow the SNID was rejected, going to call and figure that part out tomorrow

Make sure you keep copies for proof of the stuff you send them!

    • +1

The ABN number is on the top right corner of your invoice.

    • +1

My online tax invoice has the ABN for JB Hifi at the bottom, not sure why yours wouldn't. Are you sure you just didn't see the ABN?

      • +2

        Woops, I'm an idiot sorry.
The ABN is in small writing on both the confirmation AND collection emails from JB…!

  • just confirming, to switch to an ssd i just create a recovery drive on a usb, switch the drives by opening it up, then boot the usb from bios……?havent done this before…

    • +2

Yes that is correct, Acer have actually posted a video on YouTube describing the process if you get stuck. Sorry on my phone at the moment.

  • +3

You MUST add more RAM to make this beast work properly.

Added 8GB from MSY yesterday ($76) and the result is a delightful laptop.

  • +2

Added 120GB Patriot Blaze SSD ($71 from MSY) and Kingston KVR16LS11/8 8GB RAM ($76 from MSY), works great.

For those wanting to do a fresh install, you can get the Windows 8.1 with Bing x64 disc image from places such as TPB

    • +3

Yeah I ended up getting both Bing images (32/64bit). PM for a link if anyone needs it.

After M$ told me my key was blocked and I had to spend $100 on a new license to make my 24hr old laptop work I got the sh!ts and looked for the Bing download. As far as I'm concerned if you are using a legit product key (Bing will detect from BIOS) then it's all above board. Shame on M$ for not supporting it and in my case denying such a product even existed.

      • ahh that sucks!

      • Pm'd you @Click_It… Thank you in advance! :)

Another question, when it comes to eventually formatting an SSD (say after a couple of years of use), is it sufficient to do a 'quick format' when reinstalling windows, in order to bring back performance?

As the 'blocks' will be assigned as empty in the table of contents after a quick format, but might still contain data, will the computer simply overwrite the space in these blocks when I start using them?

    • +1

My own experience (take it with a grain of sand) …

I like to Secure Erase mine whenever I do a reinstall (which for me is generally every 12 months but others could be a few years) - I keep my drives cloned so it's a fairly pain-free exercise.

Secure Erase takes about 7 minutes on a 120GB SSD, use the fastest option (1 wipe, no need for the multiple wipes). Even though the Samsung is a fast drive I've found this gets performance 10-15% higher than no Secure Erase.

They say you don't need to do a SE on modern SSD's but when I observe the above I say it's still worth doing.

      • Thank you for the quick response.

Is SE an option when doing a reinstall? Or is this an application that I will have to download and run on another computer with the SSD connected somehow?

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with this SE function.

I guess my ultimate question is, if I do a 'quick format' will this have zero impact on performance, and I need to do some other kind of format (SE or full format) to regain performance. Or is 'quick format' this the traditional way to reformat an SSD?

        • +2

          No probs!

If using your laptop you will need some kind of bootable option. I use Acronis True Image 2014, I do the SE then restore my image. I'd expect free options like Ultimate Boot CD or Hiren's Boot CD (both USB bootable) would have SE built into them.

Alternatively, if you can plug the SSD into a desktop then you can use any number of free Windows software, CCleaner has a SE built into it.

To answer your ultimate question, I suspect a 'quick format' will have zero impact on performance but someone who understands SSD NAND technology better than I may know otherwise. To be honest I've always done the quick format for years on my SSD until I recently started doing the SE. Benchmark software will show a difference but it's honestly not something you will feel yourself. A fraction of a seccond here and there in reality. Now considering these laptops are SATA2/300 limited it makes SE probably a complete waste of time. Save yourself the hassle, do a quick format :)

So my Intel 7260 WiFi arrived today. (Big thanks to Xenatos, I wouldn't have thought of this upgrade had you not shared your experience)

One of my laptops was experiencing severe disconnection issues so I've swapped my old one into that.

    Benchmarks?

Stock WiFi only connected at 72 Mbps here on both laptops (even in close proximity) so your results may vary.

    5M from router:

    Intel 7260 @ 5Ghz AC -> 49MB/s (Wow! I wasn't expecting it to be this fast)
    Intel 7260 @ 2.4Ghz N -> 8-10MB/s

    Stock @ 2.4Ghz N -> 5.5MB/s

Can do more benchmarks at other distances / wall obsticles if anyone is interested but early results you can see it's almost double the stock wifi on 2.4Ghz N and a whopping 9-10x increase if you have a 5Ghz AC WiFi router. (I have a TP-Link Archer D9)

    Difficulty level? EASY.

If you can change RAM, you can change WiFi chip. There is 1 screw, and the antennas which simply click on/off.

Thank you so much for the positive feedback @Click_It :)

It's an awesome bang for buck upgrade with REAL WORLD noticeable speed boosts… I'm super happy with my $29 (5 minute) mod :)

      • +2

        Credit where credit's due :)

I still get 22-25MB/s in my lounge room ~14m and 1 wall from the router. AC dips fast but we knew that, I'm thrilled with its performance.

  • Wait… is this SATA II or SATA III?

Should I be getting a SATA III SSD or will SATA II do?

    • From comments above, the laptop only supports SATA II not SATA III. SATA III SSD will still work but it'll be limited to SATA II speeds (3Gb/s instead of the 6Gb/s). SATA II will work too.

      • It's not that I don't believe you or anyone else but is there a way to confirm this myself?

        • SATA III is backwards compatible

        • @lolmao: also, any SSD will do :)

  • Which SSD is everyone getting?

Is there a significant price difference between a SATA II vs SATA III SSD

    • +1

      You don't buy a SATA2 SSD, get a modern SATA3 SSD and it'll auto-step-back to SATA2.

The idea is, any SSD will due. Don't get too disappointed, SATA2 may cut your raw performance in half but it's still far more responsive than any HDD even if the HDD was in SATA3 mode. Just get a $75-80 SSD, don't go premium like I did :)

  • +8

Good news for anyone who bought this - I just received a notification to reserve my FREE windows 10 upgrade. Sweet!

  • Finally got around to installing the SSD and stuff here the last couple days and I've had nothing but trouble.
I wanted to move away from using 8.1 with bing so I tried installing 8.1 Pro x64 and the part of the installation where it reboots into windows, it just crashes on the little spinny circle thing - and this is on about 5 separate copies of windows.

Tried Win7 - works fine … but I kinda wanted to put 8.1 as it's primarily going to be the gf's laptop.

Tried Win 8.1 x86 just now and that crashes at the same point.

I've managed to reboot with the USB stick plugged out and get into Windows each time… but installing any drivers crashes the PC and needs a reboot.
Same goes for uninstalling stuff from, say, Device Manager. Thought someone might've been causing a conflict but can't uninstall devices if it keeps crashing.

    Nightmare…

Going to try use a different USB stick now … a smaller, USB 2.0 stick, and see if it prefers that.

    • +2

Tried Win7 - works fine … but I kinda wanted to put 8.1 as it's primarily going to be the gf's laptop.

win10 will be available in a couple of months for this laptop you could run win7 now and upgrade to win10 later.

      • The USB2 stick reacted same way as USB3 so it's obviously not that.

The problem with using Win7 was the drivers are almost IMPOSSIBLE to find online as it was seemingly sold specifically as a Win8 product by the looks of things.
I spent hours scouring the internet for the hardware ID's of each of the devices in device manager for Win7 drivers and finally gave up and went to Win8

Never come across such a poorly supported laptop in my life, from a driver point of view.

I had removed the Acer partition so I was kinda worried I'd be snookered here but I just put in the old HDD again and did the built in windows recovery option on a USB and reinstalled on SSD and so far so good - although, I'm still stuck with Bing but at least it's installed on the SSD now.

        • Sounds like u had a bad run.

I installed 8 GB of ram and a ssd and then did a fresh install of win 8.1 pro without any problems.

I downloaded the latest usb install version of win 8.1 from Microsoft and used the link for drivers provided by mattoo a couple of pages earlier and it worked like a charm.

          http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/drivers

        • @scuba79:

Yeah, I did the very same thing initially. 8GB of RAM and SSD too.
I tried the old and new RAM with same results.

So, only thing it could have been was the SSD.

          I tried Win 8.1 Pro and Ultimate … x64 and x86 - as well as Win7.

It's working well now on 8.1 w/ Bing and I've removed all the crap off it - spent about 10 times longer than I wanted/intended to.
          It'll stay as is until Win10.. :)

  • A cheap 240GB SSD for $115 delivered at ShoppingExpress
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/198070

Decent drive for the price and better reviews than the Kingston drives others have been using to upgrade

    • Also the cheapest 8GB stick I could find was this Crucial one for $70 pickup from Centrecom. Good alternative for those with a location near them:
      http://www.centrecom.com.au/8gb-crucial-sodimm-ddr3-pc12800-…

Shipping is also available, came up as $7.45 for standard shipping to addresses in VIC and WA that I tested

  • guys, has anyone actually gotten their $39 cashback yet? i submitted my application on 30 may and mailed it that day too (saturday). by then the cashback period was extended til 31 july already.

i checked my status and i get this:

    Correct Claim form processed: Yes
    Correct Tax Invoice processed: Yes
Correct SNID barcode cut-out from carton processed: No

Please note: It may take up to 6 weeks within the total 8 week period for your claim to be processed. We are unable to verify receipt of documents until they have been processed.

does that mean they're just taking their time to process?

    • When I check my status it says

      Cashback Claim Number: N***********
      Claim Status:
      Processing

Estimated completion date: 11 July 2015

On approval of your Acer Cashback, cash card for Australian claims / cheque for New Zealand claims will be issued and sent to the address below.

Then has my address details below. Am looking on my phone though so might be different in full site

      • hmm mine says "Claim Status: Pending Supporting Document(s)" doesn't have estimated completion date nor my address.

when did you submit yours if I may ask?

        • I submitted online on 16/5 and posted about a week later.

Looking at your status again I would assume that there was a problem with the ssid cutout as it says not processed. U might have to give them a call

      • My status: Estimated completion date: 09 July 2015

  • I tried upgrading to an SSD (Sandisk) but it doesn't appear and reads "No bootable device". I've tried taking it out and putting it back in but same thing (cause that's all i know). Would someone be able to help?

    • a bit more info is needed to help. when you say it doesn't appear do you mean in the bios or when booting from a usb.
when you installed the drive did you clone your existing hdd onto the ssd or are you trying to install windows from a usb.

    • I had a similar issue. Originally tried to clone but that failed, then Acer recovery. Both had same error. I took the drive out and completed a full wipe and tried a different USB that I created using Acer recovery. It then decided to work, was a royal pita

  • my card arrived today.
