Best Value SLR with Full HD Camera under $700 or So?

I am in the market to buy an SLR Camera that does full HD Video and decent photos too.
I am no professional but would like something decent.
Any ideas?
Not too fussed about twin lens etc but would take it if it came at the right price.

The best value cameras out at the moment are either the cheaper Nikon models, or mirrorless cameras from brands like Sony or Olympus.

My best recommendation would be fore something like a Nikon D3300 with a single lens for under $600, which is a great entry level SLR with Full HD video, a 24 Megapixel Sensor, and obviously a bit of money left over for a memory card, bag and filter. They have a 'guide' mode which is pretty useful for learning how to use manual features, and they also come with 2 years warranty by default in Australia.

If you can stretch your budget a little bit, the new mirrorless style cameras give really similar quality pictures with much faster frame rates (around 10 photos per second on some models). For between $700-$900, you could either purchase an Olympus OM-D EM10, which is really small, very well built and lovely to use with great image stabilisation. I think the best camera around for starting out is the Sony A6000, which is also a compact model with excellent image quality. It can be found with a lens at the moment for just under $900 from places like JB Hifi.

Hope that helps, and good luck deciding.

  • If video is a primary function for you, SLR's are terrible especially at that price point. You will want one of the mirrorless cameras.

    • I don't know about terrible, shoots fair better video than most over devices without getting high end.

Nah I think terrible is quite accurate to describe them especially at ~$700, but if you're comparing to a phone or small low-end compacts perhaps then they will be decent. At that price point you can probably buy a Canon 700d or Nikon 5200, both of which can't even shoot beyond 1080p/30 let alone any bitrate that's considered worthy.

SLR's are for photos with video as an afterthought unless you're willing to go high-end. For your low/mid range gear, you should be going mirrorless for video.
