Frank's RedHot. Classic Hot Sauce from the US -- $2 at Coles

1040

Frank's RedHot. This stuff is legit, classic US hot sauce. It's pretty new to Coles, and I hope they're gonna continue to sell it, so buy up, Ozbargain hot sauce fans!

This stuff is not crazy hot, but is a similar heat level to Tabasco — maybe even a little milder. The taste is a lot less vinegar-y though, and it's delicious. Splatter this stuff all over some fried eggs with some S & P and you'll know what's up.

I'm really hoping that Coles don't stop selling this stuff, because I love it. It's usually $3 a bottle, but it's currently selling for $2.

Damn just bought them for $3.50~ yesterday at Woolworths. First time buying it after reading great reviews for it. Haven't tried it out yet. Quite expensive for the size though.

    • +2

I didn't realise Woolies were selling it too, but I'm glad to hear it. I hope Frank's is here to stay. I was worried that Coles were trying to clear it out and wouldn't be stocking it any more.

It may seem a little expensive for the size, but when you compare it to Tabasco, it's actually pretty cheap — even at $3 a bottle.

    • easy, return to them

ABC - Extra Hot Chilli Sauce (335ml) at Coles is great taste/price too…

    • One of my favorites besides Sriracha and fresh chilies. I love garlicky sauces but can't stand vinegary salsas.

  • +2

a similar heat level to Tabasco — maybe even a little milder

    Umm maybe it is lemonade.

BTW Tabasco is not hot at all.

    • 95% vinegar, it sucks.

      • +1

Don't know where your getting your Tabasco from, but the ones in Coles/Woolies are the real deal (from the US). 15-20% Red Pepper.

        • As is mine.

I will pick up a few bottles of this. Looking forward to giving it a go.

        • +1

          @Juddy:

          Hyperbole.

It's main ingredient is vinegar and it has such a poor flavour compared to other hot sauces.

        How about 100% chili? http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/146478/30948/20150602_1…

My collection: Carolina Reaper>Ghost Chili>>Habanero>>>Bird's Eye.

I laugh at all the "hot sauces" I can find in supermarkets.

        • Ive noticed that, despite Winter preventing the Aussie harvests, Coles have imported American Chillis.

How would you rate them?? What did you put them in?

        • +2

@cheapy: These chilies are now grown in Australia even though they're native to Central America and the Caribbean. Carolina Reaper is the hottest of the bunch, Ghost Chili is a bit less hot but still crazy, Habanero is in 3rd place.

In order to make it easy to compare the "hotness" of these chilies, I use some references in Scoville Heat Units (SHUs):

          • Habanero (250,000-450,000 SHUs) is used to make the hottest Tabasco Hanabaro which is around 30,000 SHUs.(Classic Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 SHUs). I bet you tried it already! I can eat a 1-cm slice or maybe half of a chili per meal.

          • Ghost chili (900,000 to 1,100,000 SHUs) held Guinness World Records 2007 for the hottest chilies. I can eat around a 0.5-cm slice or two in one meal. The first 2 chilies I ate were not very hot because they were young. I was about to return them at Coles to get the Carolina Reaper. But then I tried the 3rd chili and it was burning my mouth for like 10 minutes. The burning feeling tortured my stomach for hours later on.

          • Carolina Reaper, as of 2015, is officially the world's hottest chili. It is a crossbreed between Ghost Chilis and Red Habanero. It averages a 1,569,300 SHU with peak levels of over 2,200,000 SHU. Believe me, just a bit of it can paralyze your mouth and throat. Don't ever try to chop it without gloves or you'll regret when you touch sensitive body parts such as eyes, nose or genital. LOL! I chopped around 1-cm of it and put in my 3-liter sour bamboo soup. And man, hot soup intensified the chili's strength even more. Prepare a glass of milk or a cup of yogurt in case you can't handle it!

At $350/kg, they're really worth the price. You can get them cheaper at Coles this week. I think they've lowered the price to $280/kg or you may try to get the Reduce to clear for even cheaper price.

Be careful when handle them, I've warned you!

        • @721411: Hey, it's OK. I'm pretty heavy on the chillis. I've munched a whole raw Coles Habanero before, and my freezer is currently home to 20+ habs which I bought right before the end of Season.

I saw them for 3$ a pack, which is about the same as the Coles Brand.

At least now I know I won't be cooking with Carolina Reapers. Oh, and isn't the hottest now the Trinidad Scorpion Butch T?

        • +1

@cheapy: Yep, $3 per 10g pack so $300/kg. I hope you enjoy the feeling like I did. Or you may be more experienced than me and feel like they are not so hot as I described.

Update: The Trinidad Scorpion Butch Taylor made headlines in April 2011 when laboratory tests measured its heat at 1,463,700 Scoville Heat Units (SHUs). But Carolina Reaper holds the record now.

    • Habanero Tobasco is actually pretty awesome.

I bought a gallon/4lt of this from BBQ Galore ~2years ago. Im down to my last 300ml. Its been an enjoyable couple of litres.
Their advertising slogan in USA is "I put this sh1t on everything" and its true, it's great on everything.

American here and just wanted to let you all know that sauce mixed with a bit of butter melted is a great compliment to chicken wings and even better during a footy game… just bake some wings and then dip them in the sauce…YUMMY!

    • +1

yep! 50/50 franks and butter. I use it like this as a glaze

    • +1

Yep , get your cheap chicken from KFC on Tuesday with frank hot sauce and some rice on the side. That's what I call a romantic dinner with wifey!

  • +5

Another US expat here. This stuff is basically the same stuff that the original buffalo wing sauce is made of. Not hot but lots of flavour.

You can almost literally put it in anything. As kids we would put it on plain potato chips. 😊

Once you are hooked, Costco sells the huge bottles in a two pack…

    • Never seen it at Costco. Frenchs mustard is there, i just need the Franks in the huge bottles and life is set :)

      • +1

USA foods has it in the gallon jug for around $35

      • +1

Costco North Lakes just brought it back. It was out for a while.
Check again it might be there. Wifey nabbed two bottles about 2 weeks ago.

      • +1

It is at Costco Auburn for sure, and think I have seen it at Costco Casula. Comes in 2-packs.
It's an amazing sauce but don't think of it as a hot sauce. It's a tasty vinegar-based sauce used on everything - chicken, fries, eggs, rice, pizza, pasta … and most commonly mixed with butter as a wing sauce. They also have extra spicy versions which haven't made it down here and which pack a bit more spice, but still don't compare with proper Mexican sauces.

        • Adelaide's COSTCO seems to have at least one hot sauce for sale. I'm into Tabasco (large, 335ml, only $7), which is not as hot as Cholula Hot Sauce or full-on chilli sauces, which have also been available at COSTCO.
If you want a serious Mexican hot sauce, give Cholula Hot Sauce a go.

  • +5

    This is God's own sauce!
I believe it is used as holy water in some enlightened circles.

  • +2

    Pronounced Hawt Saus

  • Pretty much any place that sells 'buffalo wings' in Australia use franks hot sauce. The secret is out.

  • +3

If you put this stuff up against Sriracha I have no idea which one would win. They are too good.

As Kfuerza said, at Costco you get a pack with 2 very large bottles. With the way I go through it, one of these Coles bottles would last 2 days.

From the moment my older brother fed me a teaspoon of Hot English Mustard as a baby (I am not kidding, that actually happened), I became a connoisseur for all things spicy.

This experience was my superhero-style inception (Peter Parker getting bitten by spider, Hulk's gamma exposure etc).

I am excited to try this chili sauce.

    • +1

It barely classifies as hot sauce, as the OP said, it's not that hot - about the same as Tabasco (English mustard is hotter). It is however a tasty sauce and delicious with eggs.

    • +1

Agree with syme321 it's not 'hot' for those of us that love spicy stuff.

Has good generic 'hot sauce flavour' (buffalo wing flavour).

For a good daily sauce, I like Tobasco's Habanero sauce
      http://www.tabasco.com/objects/pages/tabasco-products/sauces…

My long stint in California also makes me partial to Tapatio as well…

    bonus diarrhea?

  • Great sauce - have everyday on eggs. Not loade with sugar like some of the others too

    • Try a teaspoon of Oyster Sauce and spring onions with ur eggs.

  • I've never seen this at my coles.. thats awesome gonna try n buy this.

  • I am severely limited in sauces because I don't want a heap of sugar in my sauce and nearly all of them have more sugar than ice cream does. What's that about? I've got nothing against sugar but I want it in sweets not savoury sauces.

Anyway this is one of the few available in supermarkets that I can buy. I gave it a go but don't like the taste.

I get Nando's Peri Peri Extra Hot- 4.6% sugar. There is a Tabasco sauce at Woolies which is even lower in sugar, if I recall correctly, but it's not hot enough.

    • +1

You could find a recipe and make your own?

  • I find this is quite runny like tabasco (probably less so). If dipping, i use cholula (also from coles or 2 x 375ml for $7 at costco) as it has a thicker texture. Also very tasty

  • +1

This is not hot at all. Try Blair's death sauce for HOT

    • +1

Even the Blair's sweet sauce is hotter than most other sauces

    • Man I had that death sauce on a single item at a bar in Japan and I was crying….

      Its good stuff

    • Blairs is nice and hot I just find the flavour of sauces on the hotter end of their scale to not be tasty. I recommend 'daves insanity sauce' for a good tasting and super hot sauce.

  • +1

If anyone is thinking about the heat and consistency, the sauce is about 1/2 the strength of Tabasco. Not that hot but very tasty. The sauce is about the same consistency of Tabasco.

  • +1

Thing is between this and Tapatio, Franks has simple ingredients. If I remember correctly Tapatio has preservatives etc.

    • +1

+1 for no added preservatives, flavours, colours etc alone!

  • Woolies were selling Tapatio recently for only $1.50. For me it kind of nailed the light hot sauce.
Hotter and thicker but with less vinegar. Its great stuff and also excellent on everything.
    http://www.tapatiohotsauce.com/

    • Tapatio- "no added sugar"- can't find nutritional information though. Could be a winner. Haven't seen it at my Woolies. I'll keep an eye out for it.

It's on special online but I ordered online yesterday.

      • Try it, its my current favorite after a long hot sauce journey :)

      • https://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/tapatio/hot-sau… for nutritional information
From Wikipedia: The ingredients, as listed on the product label, are: water, red peppers, salt, spices, garlic, acetic acid, xanthan gum and sodium benzoate as a preservative.

      • It's spooky that I have come across the name Tapatio twice in the last 2 days in completely different areas, having never seen the name before in my life. I was advised by someone 2 days ago to keep an eye out for a vendor named Tapatio on the dark web markets, should I ever wander that way.

        • I believe Tapatio is in Coles/Woolies/Aldi. Fairly easy to find these days in the Mexican food section.

        • I was told he was to be found at agora, nucleus and abraxas.

  • Pretty decent price. It's too bad they don't sell bigger bottles though. I had to go to a local hot sauce place to get the gallon sized franks for $40.

  • I've tried this sauce over the past few years. Not hot at all. I find Cholula to be much nicer, but also not a hot one.

Ticketed and scanned at $3 at Coles George St.

For those looking for a hotter sauce, Franks is an excellent base. As an expat, below is my goto recipe for buffalo wing sauce which is quite hot (clone of BW3 Hot sauce).

1 Cup Franks cayenne pepper sauce
    1 Teaspoon white sugar
    1½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
    ½ teaspoon garlic powder
    ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
    1/8 Teaspoon ground black pepper
    1 egg yolk
    2 Teaspoons water
    2 Teaspoons cornflour

Heat first 6 ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then turn down to low and simmer for 10 min.
Whisk together last 3 ingredients in a bowl.
Slowly pour saucepan contents into the cornflour mixture while whisking (so egg doesn't cook).
Cook chicken wings separately, then coat in sauce before serving.

    • i need to check my phone but i think when i was living in london, i went to dublin and went to i think elephant and castle, best wings ever and that sauce was amazing!..

  • My nose runs like a tap whenever I eat hot stuff. Others have sweaty foreheads. How about you guys?

    • I ask for extra chilli in my vindaloo at indian restaurants.

I haven't tried this sauce but I am personally a fan of this Indonesian Chilli sauce I pick up from Asian groceries. Tastes like chilli and nothing else.

these are definitely hotter than the durex play gels

  • Just grabbed some. Will try this with eggs like you suggested.

    Thanx Fappo.

  • Bought 3 today, will give them a try - thanks OP!
