Increase CPU Speed

Hi, I have a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3517U CPU @ 1.90GHz and would like to slightly increase the CPU speed? Any steps on how to do it ?
Thanks

You'd have to have an unlocked cpu that allows it to be overclocked, and it sounds like it's a laptop cpu? Would steer clear even if you were able to overclock that cpu because of the poor cooling capability of laptops

      ^ This.

An overclocked laptop doubles as a stovetop.

  • List all your pc specs.

As Kawaii69 said, Your CPU is locked so you can't overclock. And even if you could, you shouldn't on a laptop.
Specs say your base frequency is 1.9Ghz, but has a maximum of 3.0Ghz.
Apart from buying a new laptop, there is nothing you can do.

Why do you think you want to increase the CPU speed. CPU is rarely the bottleneck, its more likely IOPS (get a SSD / faster SSD) or Memory (get more ram).

Try cleaning all the dust out of the fan vents.

  • I can tell you how to overclock your laptop. I'm assuming you will be taking the laptop into a walk in freezer correct?

Alternatively you and disassemble your laptop for better airflow and point a desk fan at it.

    • please don't use a laptop in a freezer.. its as bad as using a laptop in a hot oven. Extreme temps at either end are bad..

  • 1) use a good laptop cooler (preferrably one with dual fans & extra USB ports) :)

    2) be sure it's the CPU at fault for whatever poor performance you're experiencing. It may be that a RAM or HDD-to-SDD upgrade will solve your troubles, and the fixes I mention do not involve (generally) near-total disassembly of your laptop.

    Good luck!

  • If you're completely happy to destroy your laptop in the name of science go here

I know someone that used it on a windows x64 tablet. It made the thing run at max speed and he was happy with it. The problem was that it used the battery faster than it was capable of charging. While on charger it would run out of juice after 3 hours. He could use it for 3 hours in the morning, turn off throttle stop until lunch time, give it an hour to charge while on break and get another 3 hours before throttling it. He used this as his main work machine and was happy with it (mobile technician).

I have no doubts that he is halving the life that tablet will give but at the end of the day tablets are only relevant for 1-2 years anyway. I'd also use this software on a laptop/tablet that was < 6months away from the end of it's life. Would I use it on a purchase that still had 1-2 years life left on it, NO WAY!
