  • Is this legit?

    • Significantly cheaper than their online price
      http://www.harveynorman.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=lifx

      • That link shows $78 for me.

        • click one of the lamps in the the link then the price is significantly higher - about double the price

        • @Frig:
Yeah the search page has change to show $78 since I posted that link. However, clicking on the product still has it at $129.

It's not double. About 65% more is not double.

        • @Shonky:
now it's showing $78 when I tried dummy purchase

    • Yep - it scans at that price on their registers. Just not advertised on their website at that price,

  • +3

    Still a rip-off IMO.

    • Yup. http://mimoodz.myshopify.com/ (although Bluetooth and the product/app quality remains to be seen)

      • Only 6W too so won't be very bright.

        • They're mood lights, depends on what you want smart-controlled bulbs for! :)

PS. Three are less than a LiFX bulb and then the wattage is higher! :P

        • @Lukian:
My point is they are not comparable to the Lifx units and even the Lifx units are not all that bright. Lifx are only about 60W equivalent.

        • Yeh the LIFX is 17W and over 1000 Lumens so quite a bit brighter. Plus it's WiFi so you can control it out of the house (e.g. switch off once you leave certain area, have lights switch on at specific times so it looks like your home etc.)

        • @Shonky: 'The LIFX bulb shines at 1,017 lumens, which in terms of incandescent bulb luminance is somewhere around 75 watts'

        • @bu0489: There's a potential that bulbs like MiMoodz will gain a 'gateway' device with similar functionality.

        • @Lukian:
They're about 10% short of what's generally considered a 75W equivalent. And their "white" is only 890 lumens.

Random info: LIFX is based and designed in Melbourne, so buying this is helping our meagre tech industry.

    • I think its their original office was in Melbourne however most of their global work is out of SanFran. Although I think when buying in AU, it is the Melb warehouse that supplies it.

    • Yeah Kickstarted as an alternative to Hue except it's more expensive lol.

Plus it's cheaper to get a LIFX in the US than here in Melbourne where it was 'invented'.

Guy did pretty well out of it though.

I bought one of these earlier this year for $100 and absolutely love it. Use it every day. Such an enhancement to your ability to control your environment.
I would definitely recomend it for anyone that is into lighting control and color manipulation around their house or room

  • I use one of the LIFX globes in my high ceiling apartment and it's great. At the time when I bought it, it was the only smart bulb I could find that was bright enough.
There are probably quite a few now.

Software is good too, updated semi-regularly. Last bulb firmware update significantly speed up the discovery time, and scheduling is pretty nice.

Price is the only negative thing for me though. I think I paid $129 for one last year, which imho is too much but me being the sucker to try new things…

  • $78 for a 'light bulb', be real people.

    • +1

Yeah in quotes. It is not only a smart bulb but it is a LED bulb too and that is not an insignificant cost on its own. Probably $20 alone. You'll probably say that's too much too.

        • +2

At least compare comparable light outputs. $20+ to match the claimed 1000+ lumens.

I could say the same compared to buying a halogen bulb for a few dollars but LED has advantages and you pay for it. These have further advantages.

Oh and these don't have any kind of home automation functionality right? I realise that was your point but you're hardly comparing like products. Some people want this functionality.

For the record I don't own any LIFX bulbs. I do think $78 each is a bit much to do a house but people can spend their money how they want.

          @Shonky: I just +1'd you. Have a good evening.

        • @malouphix:
          U got rekt m8

        • @Hirolol: Not at all my good man. Just tipping my hat to the fellow.

    • +1

      Agree with you LEL.

Although I bet people that bought one will be quick to jump in and come up with reasons like you need to when someone managed to take $78 from you for a lightbulb. You might feel silly otherwise :p

Something interesting to think about: humans are hopeless at quantifying light intensity since our eyes automatically adjust the amount of light entering them and the brain seems to work in comparisons of values rather than absolutes.

This allows things to happen such as some lights losing half of their brightness over time and we have no way of knowing unless we measure the light intensity ie. get a lumen reading.

  • So does this just work like a normal light bulb but you just leave the switch on all the time?

  • Heads up, the website is adding an additional $5.25 discount per bulb when ordering 4 or more bulbs.

Once you've got 4 or more in the cart, you can't stack it with and promotional codes (i.e. Welcome $25 for newsletter sign up).
