Overseas Travel: Liquid Cash + 28 Degrees MC Cash Withdrawl

NB: Please don't suggest Citi Plus Visa debit, already have enough accounts and cards. I am happy to pay the 4$ ATM withdrawal/Cash advance fee of 28 Degrees MC.

I am going overseas in few days. Will leave without any cash, plan to withdraw Euro at Paris just after I reach using 28 Degrees MC.

  1. Everything is already paid for except meal and intercity transport. For 12 days Europe stay, how much euro I need in cash?

  2. Say I have topped up my 28 Degrees MC with AUD equivalent before I leave and withdraw it in cash once in Paris. How much I will be charged by 28 Degrees MC? I know interest starts right away in case of cash advance.

Thanks!

just overload your 28 deg card, youll still get charged fees and such but at least youll avoid cashadvance

  • Last time we went (UK/Ireland) a few years back we just used our Commonweath Keycard (cirrus?), worked in all autotellers.

  • Last time i checked 28 degrees charged $4 or 3% (whichever is greater….so if you withdraw $1000 its a $30 fee not $4) for overloaded cash advances. You wont get charged interest (because of the positive balance), but it makes it pretty similar to just using your normal debit card.
In the 28 degrees T&Cs it says:
"Will I be charged a cash advance fee if my card has a positive balance?
Yes, you will still be charged a cash advance fee if you withdraw cash from your 28 Degrees MasterCard even if the card has a positive credit balance. We do not recommend that you load your card into credit as this is not the intended purpose of the card."

    • I have a ING Direct Everyday account and the overseas withdrawal fee is 2.5$ fixed - http://www.ingdirect.com.au/rates-and-fees/orange-everyday-f…

      What is ING's exchange rate?

Most debit cards add a 3% currency conversion fee on top of their rate of the day. They seem to be pretty vague about it on the page, but i bet it is there. You could call them to confirm, might be the only way to find out.

        • Just talked with them, and there is NO conversion fee, its done by VISA's end (just as Citibank plus I guess?). That's good news!

This has already been covered in here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/127669

So, I'll load ING for immediate cash withdrawal, then keep it in carry-on as a backup card. The 28 Degrees will be in wallet and used as the main card for purchases. How's the plan?

  • when I was in europe last year I used my 28degrees card pretty much every where. and pretty much for everything I bought -nearly everything. A couple of times I withdrew a couple of hundred euros from an ATM just to have some cash.

just preload your 28 degrees card with extra cash just in case.

    • Cash advance fee: $4 or 3% (whichever is greater). Minimum fee is 4$, maximum is 3% of withdrawal amount.

This is a pretty large fee right there, I'll use ING to withdraw cash and it'll act as backup card in case 28 Degrees gets stolen/eaten at ATM.

      • My bad, I forgot I had a Citibank card for My ATM withdrawals and 28 degrees for card purchases.

Best way of doing it :)
OP just doesn't have the time/wallet space/patience (required to deal with citibank's drawn out application process) to get the Citibank card.

        • @fenric: Exactly! Just last week closed my CBA credit card since I have 28 Degrees now, life is good.

        • can you use the citibank card for card purchases as well? or is there a fee involved?
