Retrofitting Roller Shutters: experiences, recommendations?

We are considering to retrofit roller shutters.

Does anyone have experience with this topic? How much effect does the added insulation have on a hot summer day compared to just closing blinds/curtains? Can I expect the room to stay a couple of degrees cooler?

Has anyone tried DIY installations and if so, is that as easy as some sellers claim?

In my research I have found two companies who sell online. Have you got experience with either? Any others that I missed? http://www.ezyfitrollershutters.com.au/ and http://www.rollershutters.com.au/

Both seem significantly cheaper than any of the companies that send their high pressure sales reps. A neighbour paid over $1000 per shutter after getting a massive discount for allowing a sign to be placed on his lawn. His shutters are manual operation. A similar sized shutter from either of the links above comes to $670 and includes the motor and switch which have a value of > $200. So about half the price for the DIY option.

  • roller shutters will assist in keeping the temperature down a fraction. personally I think they make a house look like a prison.

how about applying tinting film to the windows to reflect light?
or if you don't care how the job looks and dont need to look out the window then aluminium foil.

    • Interesting comment, I never thought of them as a negative feature when I looked at houses, but it sure is something I should consider when it comes to resale value. I wonder how many people think like that. Perhaps a survey is in order?

Your alternatives won't work though. The big advantage I see in roller shutters is how easy they are to open - to let sunlight in in winter during the day, then close again at night for better insulation.
