Kogan Ultra HD 4K TV Suitable as PC Monitor?

Hey techies, this TV seems super cheap..and need some advice…i need a large screen PC monitor and want to fit as much on the screen as possible at once. I don't care about video/movie quality so much, just as a daily browser. So if the max resolution on my PC's graphics card is 2560 x 1600, I'm wobdering should be able to use this for more 'viewing room' on my PC display compared to a 1080p output with an HDMI?

Seems very cheap for something this size and that resolution.

Would this work okay as a huge PC monitor? (everything even close to 32' or larger is like $1200+ it seems, this seems like a good budget solution).

My PC doesn't have a mini HDMI out, just normal HDMI out and VGA out. It also has one of those other outs that I think is for higher resolution than VGA with the pin holes.
any advice appreciated!

Cheers guys.

  • Long story short, what you're proposing will work as long as your graphics card support 4K output via HDMI.

I currently use a MacBook Pro outputting 4k via HDMI to my 4K TV.

  • If your PC (video card)has normal HDMI out then you'll be restricted to HDMI (1920 x 1080) resolution the other port with all the holes is probably a DVI connection running that to the 4k IF it supports DVI connection MAY give you 2560 etc but as zen points out you best check your video card supports 4k

Look up the video card you have on the manufacturers web site (Gigabyte, Asus, Sapphire) etc and it will tell you wether its for 4k or not. From memory most cards to support 4k have two hdmi outputs on the card which have to both be used to connect and give correct framerates etc to tv

Looking at the Kogan TV specs they don't support DVi so its HDMI only and at 4k res only at 30 fps best to stick with a big normal hdmi tv.

I'm running a 48 inch TV at hdmi res and play some intensive graphical games at high enough res to be smooth

Heres a link from 2014 re [whats needed to run at 4k] (http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/what-hardware-do-you-…)

  • Unless you are going to run 4K you would be better off going with a 1080p screen due to non native resolution, if you think you will ugrade you pc to 4k capability maybe worth it. WARNING screen must have 1:1 pixel mapping if using HDMI other wise blurring will occur, also make sure sharpening can be turned off.
I replied to a thread recently re tv as a screen, link https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/203543

  • i run 1,080p on a 40 and its too small lol
