Wanted - Exterior Paint for Wall (s) - 160 Litres -

I am fixing up a heritage house with weatherboard walls - some boards have been replaced which now means
all the exterior walls have to be painted (Mission Brown - although I wanted Rainmist!!)

Do members know of a cheaper bulk paint shop anywhere (because I travel a lot)that has paint in the
$5/litre range.I would prefer to source from one location - required is 160 litres plus

Multiple coats of different colours to seal the surfaces is not a problem however the final coat will be 'the Brown'.

thanks

  • Must be a big house…r u sure about your calculation. Try to use the best quality you can afford ,my minimum quality would be dulux.

  • it is big - my guesstimate of 160 litres includes up to five coats - two to seal, two to colour, one spare

the verandahs on the east and south sides have been enclosed (weatherboard)and this is the living
area - the internal(older) portion of the house is a lounge and multi bedrooms -

I sourced replacement boards and was surprised that the boards that were replaced were in such bad shape -
just the outlines of the board and a linen like structure holding the things together.

It is estimated there is $28000 of jarrah in this house (the replacement cost NOW)however it was built 80+ years ago.

just received an offer of litres (and litres) of black paint!!

    please keep the info coming

  • Too late now, but currently we are replacing the rotting weatherboards for our courtyard garden with Colorbond miniorb; the rest is the original brick. You can get weatherboard shaped colorbond as well; which look quite good for traditional looking houses. It is more expensive but you won't have to paint or replace for a very long time. BTW I agree with you the Rainmist looks much better.

Our warehouse conversion is 20 years old now and the Jarrah floorboards are still magnificent. They probably need to be sanded and re-stained but people still marvel at them. If you are going to paint Mission brown on Jarrah wood I am going to weep.

  • +1

two to seal, two to colour, one spare

Wouldn't it be easier to get a proper sealer, that will save one maybe two coats of painting.

BTW Masters have Pascol Paint "ready to go" for $20 (4 litres) = $5 a Litre or 2X4 litres for $30

    https://www.masters.com.au/product/101360881/pascol-ready-to…

You could tint this so it gives a better colour base for your Mission Brown

  • RR - I have taken the (exposed) surface back to clean wood however there are cracks in the surface and I hope the thicker (cheaper) self sealing paint will even the surface up, in effect I am depending on paint to smooth the surface inconsistencies - no cracks seem to penetrate to the wall cavity - I did replace a shed load of boards and have now techscrewed all boards (formerly they were nailed - and archaeologist has taken a sample of the extracted nails ( I did mention it was an old building and it appears the nails were made on site (from wire?))

Look, its not a Rolls Royce finish and it never was. The bottom edges of the boards look wavey but they are there to stay now - painting will be the finishing touch, the roof is done (corrugated)and the stumps have been replaced (wasn't that an expense!!) and one can walk around bent over underneath all of the house, plumbing has been renewed as initially there was no running water or electricity inside.

22 solar panels will be installed on adjacent sheds as they will interrupt the line of the roof if installed on the house. There are about 60 rings of wood stacked down the side and back from last Sundays foray with chainsaw and grandkids so heating is covered for this winter (I bloody hope)

All that is missing are tomatoes, basically

    cheers

    • if its heritage listed you wouldnt be allowed to use tek screws.

I think you have this wrong

    I hope the thicker (cheaper)

    Is usually cheaper = thinner.

You may be confused where Cheaper = larger pigments vs Dearer = finer pigments. Pigment being the colouring agent.

    A quick google gives

I'm not pushing the more expensive paint as per my link to the cheaper Pascol.

What I do know is that undercoat has a far better adhesive qualty than top coat. Its formulated differently and will be better than using top coat . Also it will assist you with your issue of unevenness.

Given that the Pascol undercoat at Masters is below your per litre threshold price, at least you should consider doing it properly. The benefiit is that this should also last longer especially as its exterior paint and should at least save you a coat (1 coat undercoat vs 2 coats) in normal situations. However your unevenness may require 2 coats. At any rate you will still get better coverage with the undercoat, than the top coat strategy.

You then paint your 2 or so coats of Misson Brown over the undercoat

  • RR -thanks for your info and comments.

The initial request still stands - a location to buy cheap paint.

Hopefully, it will be Berger/Dulux/Taubman etc formerly priced at $xx / litre and now $1.50 litre.

I missed the paint auction locally yesterday when 6000 litres were sold for as low as 80c litre ( metal grey)
and it appears none matching my needs were sold (it was sold by treaty beforehand)

Weatherboards have traditionally been painted with a bannister brush!! however I have evolved to a sprayer system.

My great grandmother used to use diesel on her house (incidentally less than $2/litre still). So no spiders, ants or mozzies and no white ants because she had geese but I am sure the diesel assisted too.

The agenda is paint the house, coax the garden although what does one do with quince and the house will be passed on in better fettle than it has ever been.

    cheers

    • Sounds like you have a bit of land. If it was me I would go the whole "Green Acres". Put in the fruit trees and start bottling the produce, get some chooks, learn to whittle. Best of luck with the painting.

  • I buy my paint (non-commercial quantities) from MACE PAINT in campsie (NSW)

    they cheap

  • Painting a house is such hard work that I would not use cheap paint…too much labour.
Taubman Endure for me. The best on timber weatherboards.

  • "Do members know of a cheaper bulk paint shop anywhere that has paint in the
    $5/litre range."

I have located some paint (sufficient for two coats) of British Paint at
$xx/litre - this paint is a mis-tint and will be combined to neutralise the
colour differences then tinted to a hue approximating Mission Brown.

    More paint required thanks

  • jobs done - and well under budget
I reverted to a paid painter due to personal circumstances
The vegetable garden gets talked about at the Post Office!
Next job is to (re)do a toilet pedestal and to re do the fire breaks
NBN around the corner (and over a few hills)
    last post
    cheers
