My wife can't twll the differece between a retina and non retina display, and only uses youtube and email, higher specs of the newer models would be wasted on her. So thinking of getting her an ipad mini 1. Anyone know of any decent deals on them?

Personally would prefer getting a large screen smarphone and a full-size tablet. But everyone has their own preference.
We have two iPad minis currently.. A mini 1 and mini 2. She's using both of them interchangeably pretty much constantly and I want my retina one back while the existing iPad 1 is my daughters :). She cares so little about the difference between 1 and 2 hence my interest in just picking up another of former. No games or anything, just basic surfing and some videosn is all she uses it for.
the difference between the original ipad mini and the newer retina display models is not just the display - the hardware inside is significantly more powerful.
do your wife a favour and get her a retina ipad mini.
Id wait a month or so if possible, the next gen Ipad mini is due to be released soon and could see some clearance on the older models.

I find these days eBay listing are often not price competitive, particularly with apple gear. That's where I've been looking. Often there's deals outside of eBay which are the real bargains.
There are three iPad minis and three normal iPads in our house. The full size ones are barely used.
Also, the minis are all new apart from the wife's…it's a first generation. It really does struggle at times and in much, much slower than the new models. I'd wouldn't bother with anything Apple that's more than a couple of years old.

Get the ipad mini 2, it has the hardware specs of the ipad mini 3 except for fingerprint scanner.
Buy a busted/broken one as cheap as possible and then go into Apple and get it replaced for $199.
